Awang Damit Ahmad (b. 1956) Angin Musim Kemarau (E.O.C. Series), 1994

          Est: RM120,000 - RM200,000

Everything all around becomes parched, desiccated, shrivelled while the soil is starved of moisture and nutrients. The dryness can also cause wildfires, dust storms and is a bane to the health of man and animals. This lack of atmospheric circulation is a farmer's dread, for without the elixir water, all the earlier efforts will come to zilch. There will be little harvest but thorns from this hydrometeorological spell. Such tenuous harmony between Man and Nature lies at the crux of Awang Damit Ahmad's maiden Essence Of Culture (E.O.C., Intipati Budaya) repertoire, with his own brand of symbolisms related to land and life. But it's not all dour lament, but stoic struggles to overcome the obstacles from a wellspring of Hope and Faith. E.O.C. dates between 1985 to 1995. Awang Damit Ahmad became an artist by accident, being a late starter at the age of 27, when he studied at the Mara Institute of Technology, after working several other jobs. He had already started on his Essence Of Culture (Intipati Budaya) series in 1985 and later studied for his Master's at the Catholic University in Washington, and continued the series on his return in 1990 until 1996. His clutch of prizes includes 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Bank Association art competition, the Minor Award in the Bakat Muda Sezaman in 1984, and the Painting Award (and Consolation Prize, too) at the Salon Malaysia III at the National Art Gallery in 1991 for his Nyanyian Petani Gunung (now in Petronas Collection). He also taught at his alma mater, Universiti ITM, retiring as Associate Professor in May 2011. In 2022, his E.O.C. (Perjalanan Malam, 1989) and E.O.C. (Ingatan Waktu Kecil, 1985) were sold for RM212,800 and RM218,400, in the Henry Butcher Art Auction November edition and July edition, respectively. In the Henry Butcher March 2021 Art Auction, his E.O.C. (Apa Khabar Ledang, 1992) was sold for RM224,000. Today, Awang Damit Ahmad is one of the most important artists in Malaysia.

This work is an exquisite study from Awang Damit's iconic series, Essence Of Culture (E.O.C.), representing his world view about Man and Nature. It drew upon his experiences and memories of his hometown, translated into a process pertaining to the division of space through the interception of forms. Illustrated here are the complex abstraction of lyrical patterns interlocked in poetic movement. The distinctive shapes rendered in light and dark tones are derived from his thoughts, reflections, and observations. It is about overcoming challenges in life, making an honest living. It's not that common to find paper works of Awang Damit Ahmad which could be studies or projections of his larger main canvases with impasto drivels and more refined and defined compositions. This work features the elements of Awang Damit Ahmad's rudimentary Essence Of Culture series albeit with his strong symbolisms. Awang Damit Ahmad is credited to have started one of the most compelling new abstracts related to land, region, purpose and people. A relatively late starter in art at the age of 27, he first studied at the Mara Institute of Technology, where he was Best Student, before getting his Masters at the Catholic University in Washington (1989-1990). He catapulted into top-artist status when he not only won the 1st Prize but also the Consolation Prize in the hugely coveted Salon Malaysia III at the National Art Gallery. It was for his Nyanyian Petani Gunung (now in the Petronas collection). He also won 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Bank Association art competition in 1988. His international exhibitions include the Contemporary Paintings of Malaysia at the Asia-Pacific Museum in Pasadena, Los Angeles, in 1988. He also excelled as lecturer at Universiti ITM until May 2011, when he retired to go full time into Art. Prices of his artworks often soar high in auction houses locally and abroad.

          Awang Damit Ahmad (b. 1956) Essence Of Culture (E.O.C.) "Perjalanan Waktu - 90/10", 1990

          Est: RM90,000 - RM160,000

Life is a struggle - that is the biggest takeaway from Awang Damit Ahmad's seminal Essence Of Culture and purportedly subsequent series, too. Awang Damit Ahmad spent the early years helping his fisherman-farmer father in Kuala Penyu in Sabah, overcoming adversities and the vagaries of weather. Fishes and growing vegetables in traditional motifs, banana fronds for shelter: all encapsulated in symbolic homilies of inculcating right values and spirit of life, to fortify for future challenges. The numerals, 90/10, indicates the 10th piece done in the year 1990. The saga of Awang Damit Ahmad from fisherman-farmer to Telekoms technician to taking up Art at age 27 is a fairy-tale of grit, determination and natural talent. After studies at the Mara Institute of Technology, emerging as a Top Student, he studied up to his Masters at the Catholic University in Washington, and returning to teach at UiTM until his retirement with the rank of Associate Professor in May 2011. His huge potential was attested by the string of awards: the Major Award in Salon Malaysia III, the Minor Award in the Bakat Muda Sezaman (1984), 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Bank Association art competition (1988), and the Gold Award in the Ecorea Jeonbuk Biennale and the Olympic Fine Art in London, both in 2012. By dint of hard work, one triumphs over adversity and all the obstacles therein. While Awang Damit Ahmad's life in impoverished Kuala Penyu was no bed of roses, having to help his father till padi fields and go fishing in the rough seas, it was no tragedy either. Making do with primitive tools, overcoming the harsh land and sea and buffeting the vagaries of weather had toughened the character. Yet the memories of the early struggles are bitter-sweet. This lies at the world view of Awang Damit's seminal art series, Essence Of Culture (E.O.C., Intipati Budaya), with his own semantics of intrinsic symbolisms often couched by earthy colours. E.O.C. spanned 1985 to 1995. The saga of Awang Damit Ahmad from fisherman-farmer to Telekoms technician to taking up Art at age 27 is a fairy-tale of grit, determination and natural talent. Est: RM170,000 - RM200,000

Even without discovering the meaning and message behind Awang Damit, one is able to tell that this is a highly emotional piece, much like the rest of his works. That is what makes his paintings appealing in the first place, combined with the rare gift of artistry. The paintings speak to the viewer and make them feel something – sadness, anger, bitterness or all combined. Those familiar with his works know that his works are always, always heavy with emotion, as if they carry the burden on one’s shoulders in canvas form. Bold and livid, the colours may intimidate the viewer, but grow slowly on them, engaging them for as long as possible. Awang Damit’s paintings can be considered to be an intellectual journey of sorts, as he progressed from his EOC Series into various others, constantly exploring, continuously learning and always expressing. Awang has been heavily influenced by Latiff Mohidin and the forms typically seen in Latiff’s Pago Pago artworks can be seen in this masterpiece.

          Est: RM30,000 - RM35,000

Awang Ahmad Damit’s Marista: Orangan dan Derap Derap Jerami (1995) is a fascinating piece of Malaysian art that offers a profound commentary on rural life and the changing dynamics of society. The title itself, which translates to “Marista: Scarecrow and the Rustling of Straw,” hints at the themes explored in the artwork. Damit, a prominent figure in the Malaysian art scene, is renowned for his ability to capture the essence of rural Malaysia. The “derap derap jerami” or “rustling of straw” in the title adds another layer of meaning. The sound of the straw rustling in the wind symbolizes the passage of time and the impermanence of life. It also evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminding viewers of the simple pleasures and challenges of rural existence.

In Awang Damit Ahmad's 'opaquely' encrusted Essence Of Culture (E.O.C.) (Intipati Budaya) palette of tawny brown and dirty spring green, Sea Harvest combines the resources of land and water. Centipedes known as pun pun are a source of baits for fishing either in the river or on the remote beach front of Kuala Penyu in Sabah. They can be found in damp areas like muddy estuaries but can turn pesky, though they feed on insects and roaches. As some centipedes are venomous, they are probably killed before being strung onto the hook, but is the caught fish which devour the centipede which has venom, safe? Should be, what with its preys like shrews, toads, badgers and birds, even chickens, none the worst from eating them. The seminal E.O.C., which spanned 1985 to 1995, is Awang Damit's tome of the eternal struggle of Man and Nature, for nourishment and survival. Awang Damit Ahmad is a phenomenon, a late starter in art who ascended to prominence with his earthy E.O.C. series. From farmer / fisherman to a Telekom technician, he studied Art at a relatively late age of 27, and then became an artist and art academician, at the Mara Institute of Technology. Not much thought is spared on how paddy is grown and how it gets from the sawah padi right up to cooked rice on the dining table. The process is laborious, even technical. First there are repairing and firming the dykes, the tillage procedures with proper ploughing and harrowing rituals, besides proper soil aeration and keeping the right pH values. Other tasks include creating compost and clearing pests. Oftentimes, the new season is anticipated with great expectations and spirit. The transplanting period is in March and September, while in January and December, the semi-aquatic crop is deemed ripe for harvesting. There are also factors like upland and lowland, and the vagaries of weather. Still, Malaysia has to import more than a million metric tons of rice since 2020. The artist, Awang Damit Ahmad, had experienced being a farmer and a fisherman when young, growing up in his Kuala Penyu village in Sabah. His travails were captured in his first painting series, Essence Of Culture (Intipati Budaya), from 1985 to 1995. The series often touches on struggle between Mankind and Nature. With hard work, persistence, determination, courage and positivity, we overcome obstacles and challenges, making an honest living. The work on offer is truly a rare masterpiece of absolute quality.

The title hints at what this painting might be about. Different shapes and forms are scattered all over the canvas, with a space largely consisting of the colour grey takes precedence over the rest of the objects. Those familiar with Awang Damit’s work are provided with the knowledge that his works are inspired by his memories, most of which are scattered, symbolic and garlanded with numerous emotions. As chromatic crescendos converse with subdued tonal interludes, “EOC series” beckons the observer to explore the profound layers of existence — a labyrinthine journey where echoes of cultural memory intertwine with the enigma of the present moment. In this series, Awang Damit Ahmad beckons us to decipher the enigmatic script of existence, inscribed upon the canvas with the lexicon of abstraction and the syntax of contemplation.

Awang Damit Ahmad (b. 1956) "Black Tapioca" In Red; "Black Tapioca" In Green, 2020

          Est: RM12,000 - RM22,000

Tapioca is oft associated with the war years in Malaya where starch from the cassava roots formed a staple diet of those hiding from the Japanese invaders. It was a readily available (easy grown and fast maturing) source of carbohydrates, together with potatoes. Like it or not, it was an integral source of sustenance, cheaper than other foods. With a better life after the war, tapioca is largely forgotten until rebranded as 'pearls' in the Taiwanese bubble tea, and also served as a dish in some trendy restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. But away from the occupational epicentre in Kuala Lumpur, Awang Damit Ahmad gives his take on the reliance of tapioca for nourishment in Sabah, specifically his hometown in Kuala Penyu. Awang Damit Ahmad was born in Kuala Penyu, Sabah, in 1956 and contributed to Malaysian art for over 40 years. He is known as an abstract painter with unique characteristics and style. Among his achievements is that he has participated in more than 300 group exhibitions at home and abroad and presented ten solo exhibitions since 1994. In 2021, he received the Special Award for Sabah State Visual Artist from the Sabah Art Gallery. His first solo exhibition at Shenn's Fine Art, Singapore, was held in 1994. As a result of the show, he bought a one-acre plot of land in Sijangkang, Teluk Panglima Garang, Selangor, where he built a house and studio, PantauIraga Art Space, used as a space for students to come and undergo practical training and an artist's studio. In May 2023, Minister of Communications and Digital YB Fahmi Fadzil officiated for Awang Damit's memoir titled Garismega: Awang Damit Ahmad Biografi and a publication of his new series titled ADAlogy Estetika Timur at Galeri Prima, Kuala Lumpur. Est: RM49,000 - RM60,000

Created in 2012, Jejak Waktu 'Memori E.O.C. II' illustrates layers of warm earthy colour palettes such as red, yellow, and orange applied in abstract form with hints of cool hues like blue and green against a white background. It is a rare revisit to his earliest series Essence Of Culture (E.O.C.) painted during 1985 to 1995. An inspiring nostalgic feel that strikes the artist, and this is the outcome: an abstract work that has a little bit of E.O.C. elements and influences. Inspired by the monsoon spell, Payarama (Changing Season) relates to Awang Damit Ahmad's experience as a fisherman and farmer during the changing seasons. His work celebrates life's adversity while embracing the fruits of labour despite it. Awang Damit Ahmad was born in Kuala Penyu, Sabah, in 1956 and contributed to Malaysian art for over 40 years. Since his 1985 Ingatan Waktu Kecil, Awang Damit had taken to playing on a white backdrop off-and-on. It took a long time before collectors caught on to Awang Damit Ahmad's highly symbolic autobiographical works starting with his Essence Of Culture series (E.O.C. or Intipati Budaya, 1985-1995), on the interdependence and conflicts between Man and Nature. The key message from the E.O.C. series is to overcome challenges, work hard and make an honest living. Awang Damit Ahmad (b. 1956) Rumbia Dan Orang-Orangan (Sago And People), Essence Of Culture (E.O.C.) Series, 1992

          Est: RM90,000 - RM150,000

In lesser economically sustaining rural areas and in the earlier years, rumbia (sago) was a cheaper substitute to rice, what more to think of superfood like quinoa. Sago extracted from tropical palms like Metroxylon sagu is rich in carbs and less nutritious, but it keeps the hunger pangs away especially for the farmers and fishermen though in recent years, sago is marketed as sago pearls in the trending bubble tea, while it is still popular in making all sorts of pudding desserts. The better varieties of rice are reserved for sale for better income, while sago is sometimes used as a staple daily diet. The painting shows the lesser hierarchy of sago in the food chain, although it is possibly the main food staple on the table for the family in East Malaysia where Awang Damit Ahmad originated. Thus, it was an anatomy of hardship in Awang Damit's growing-up years in the poverty-stricken village of Kuala Penyu in Sabah, although perversely it was something the farmers and fishermen were grateful to, for providing nourishment substitute. Whatever the risks and toil taken on the fields and in harvesting marine life from the sea, it is the middle-man who reaps the real profits. It took a long time before collectors caught on to Awang Damit Ahmad's highly symbolic autobiographical works starting with his Essence Of Culture series (E.O.C. or Intipati Budaya, 1985-1995), on the interdependence and conflicts between Man and Nature. This work stems from his early major series, Essence Of Culture (E.O.C), representing his world view about Man and Nature. His abstraction is a symbolic language of the lives of farmers and fishermen, uniting all shapes and fragments of patterns arranged in a well-balanced composition. The symbolic shapes are derived from his thoughts, reflections, and observations. It is about overcoming challenges in life, making an honest living. Awang Damit Ahmad became an artist by accident, being a late starter at the age of 27, when he studied at the Mara Institute of Technology, after working several other jobs. He had already started on his Essence Of Culture (Intipati Budaya) series in 1985 and later studied for his Master's at the Catholic University in Washington DC, and continued the series on his return in 1990 until 1996. It's not that common to find paper works of Awang Damit Ahmad which could be studies or projections of his larger main canvases with impasto drivels and more refined and defined compositions. This work certainly looks dainty in execution and a tad cheery from the more dour ruminations of Awang Damit Ahmad's rudimentary Essence Of Culture series albeit with his strong symbolisms. Awang Damit Ahmad is credited to have started one of the most compelling new abstracts related to land, region, purpose and people. A relative late starter in art at the age of 27, he first studied at the Mara Institute of Technology, where he was Best Student, before getting his Masters at the Catholic University in Washington DC (1989-1990). Kemudi Dan Gubang, from Awang Damit Ahmad's seminal Essence Of Culture (E.O.C, or Intipati Budaya) series, is one more tactile than usual, though imbued with the crustiness associated with tough living and working with the soil and sea. It also takes a stark vertical veneer that challenges perspective and perceptions. Suffice to say, it's something, the water vessel in this case, subjected to the vagaries of weather despite having some contraption of human control. The E.O.C. series launched the art career of Awang Damit Ahmad, a late starter at the age of 27, covering a period from 1985 to 1995, stemmed from childhood memories of the tough life in his hometown, Kuala Penyu, in Sabah, as fishermen and farmers. Awang Damit Ahmad is an artist with a soft heart and great compassion, of human sufferings in tragedies of history. Not all his E.O.C. (Essence Of Culture) are about life's struggles, on land and water. Here, Renongan Yang Hampa - Minamata, Awang Damit rues about the Minamata tragedy which was dramatized in the eponymous film in 2020, with the lead played by Johnny Depp, from photographs by the great Eugene Smith (whose wife wrote the book on Minamata). Awang Damit also rues about the atomic-bomb devastations of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, which instantly killed nearly 300,000 residents, including some South Korean workers. Minamata in the Kumamoto prefecture in Japan has become a byword for environmental disaster, when the Chisso chemical factory dumped methylmercury into the sea from 1932 to 1968, causing neurological diseases like ataxia, numbness of limbs, loss of sight and hearing. Elsewhere earlier on, Awang Damit had lamented, in prints, about the Sabra and Shatila massacre of mostly Palestinians. Awang Damit Ahmad (b. 1956) Shadows Of Colours Burnt Into The Wall - Essence Of Culture (E.O.C.) Series, 1988

          Est: RM90,000 - RM150,000

The title itself is sinister and blood-curdling (it is probably the only English-titled Essence Of Culture E.O.C. piece, inspired by a headline / sentence from the newspaper he read). The dropping of the atomic bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima on Aug 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, instantly killed nearly 300,000 on the ground. But the tragedy didn't end there: in the fallout, survivors faced another 'death', suffering from all kinds of ailments caused by the nuclear radiation. Until today. These are the hibakusha, with about 118,935 (as of March 31, 2022) still alive today. Notable hibakusha included the late fashion designer Issey Miyake and Osamu Shimomura, who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2018. Also affected at that time were foetuses in the wombs, with the babies born suffering from diseases like cerebral palsy. The plight of these 'zombies', who were even discriminated against by their fellow Japanese, had been dramatized in art, films, music and manga. Awang Damit Ahmad was incensed by the devastating human tragedy that he devoted two works under his seminal Essence Of Culture (Intipati Budaya) series to it. What is most gory about the inhumanity is the searing heat, undermining the consciousness that even paints became molten liquids, which scorching the walls (canvases). And like a stigma, with the patterns from the kimonos worn by the victims imprinted on their skin. Lot 76 and 77 are the only two pieces in the E.O.C. series that are not related to farmers and fishermen, of land and water, but share the common similarity (from the series) in life's struggles, depicting the historical disasters that took place. Mankind should learn from history, the past mistakes, to prevent devastating incidents from recurring. It is restless, heartbreaking to see how war erupts still, even today. Est: RM90,000 - RM160,000

The harsh brush strokes, the bold and livid colours seem to interest the viewers from the first look. As an artist who finds inspirations from his childhood memories and reminiscing of the past, these may have transformed a bad memory, an angry memory into a painting on a canvas. In its entirety, this piece speaks of unsettlement, conflict or a certain kind of antagonism. The whites could represent innocence, and it is slowly tarnished by the harsh black, grey and orange, incessantly ruining the spotlessness of the whites. Born and brought up in Kuala Penyu, Sabah, he spent most of his teen years learning painting from various artists whilst traveling around the state. He initially came to Selangor to work as a technician for Telekom Malaysia, but found that art was something he truly was passionate about. He eventually left the telecommunications company, and took his Diploma in Fine Arts in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Masters Degree in the United States. A painting of his, Nyanyian Petani Gunung, won the 1991 Art Salon Malaysia Award. PETRONAS bought it and is, until this day, exhibited at the gallery.

          Est: RM60,000 - RM80,000

A farmer's work is never done. He faces perennial problems from soil, weather and pests all year round. Parched, dessicated, and dried up, in the dry season from April to September in Sabah, what more with open burning, bush fires and drought. He has to deal with diseases like the padi blast fungus (pyricularia oryzae) and the pernicious Lalang, Imerata cylindrical, or illui grass, with a resistant rhizome that could withstand fire, what more with the acacia mangium. There's also the added expenses of fertilisers and mechanisation with the phasing out of buffaloes. These are Awang Damit Ahmad's farming dirge when young, yet the labour and hardships are celebrated with stoicism, even alacrity. Yes, there is beauty even in the conflagration of the lalang weeds, in the process of overcoming the obstacles of life. A comparative late-starter in art at the age of 27, Awang Damit Ahmad is a success story of an erstwhile farmer cum fisherman turned Telekom technician and then art academician and an artist of growing stature. His promise was evident during his studies at the Mara Institute of Technology when he was adjudged Best Student (1983). In 1984, he won the Minor Award in the coveted Bakat Muda Sezaman and in 1988, 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Banks Association art competition. He also won the Gold Awards in the Ecorea Jeonbuk Biennale and the Olympic Fine Art in London (both in 2012). In 1988, Awang was among an elite group of artists selected for the Contemporary Paintings of Malaysia exhibition at the Asia-Pacific Museum in Pasadena. He got his MFA from the Catholic University in Washington DC, United States in 1990. In 1992, Awang won one of the nation's biggest prizes when he clinched the Major Award for Painting (and also a Consolation Prize) in the 3rd Salon Malaysia III. Prices of his artworks often soar high in auction houses locally and abroad. In Henry Butcher March 2021 art auction, his Apa Khabar Ledang (from the same E.O.C. series) was sold for RM 224,000. Night and day become a ritual of life to the solitary fisherman or farmer who trudges back home with only the moon as guide across muddied pathways. When the hurly-burly's done, and with the day's battle lost and won, it's an indescribable feeling to be back home to the warmth of a hearty meal and warm bed, and to be with family, even if they form shadowy shapes in the dim paraffin lamps. For tomorrow is another day, faced with imponderables. To be back each time from the back-breaking task on the padi-fields or the sway of the high seas with a good haul, it's a prayer of thanks to the Almighty. That is the harsh reality of living to the artist Awang Damit Ahmad when young, growing up in an obscure village called Kuala Penyu. Night is like a warm blanket, a salve to aching back and bones, a succour to face the next morning with the same fortitude. Moving forward with hopes and dreams, making an honest living. This must be the happiest to date of Awang Damit Ahmad's Essence Of Culture (E.O.C.) series, often dominated with a duller palette of brown and grey. Even the tall expanse of green on the left exudes a pleasant disposition unblemished by the debris of earth. It's a bright day for work and play, as the cluster with phalanxes of orange and red patches tells. When you are working, or toiling, especially on the padi fields or at sea, for a living, there is that eternal optimism that 'Tomorrow will be a better day' and even with obstacles, one's fortitude will somehow carry one through. As farmers and fishermen know, even with a heigh-ho fine weather, it can dramatically change for the worse… Meanwhile, it's good to count one's blessings, and maybe break into a song. With hard work and dedication, painstaking effort is paid off and rewarded, making an honest living. The painting's potential subject is suggested by the title. The canvas is covered in various shapes and forms, with a space that is dominated by the colour grey to the exclusion of the other things. Awang Damit's memories, the majority of which are dispersed, symbolic, and festooned with a variety of emotions, serve as the inspiration for his works, as those who are familiar with his work are informed. Even the name of this television series, "Marista," indicates, in Bruneian Malay, "to talk about the past." This composition is about memories that have been damaged or lost, and it is filled with fragments that are scattered around a grey space.

To the modest fishermen, the good ole’ jetties are points of departure and beacons for returning. To Awang Damit Ahmad, they represent the risk albeit with a sense of adventure, and also an accomplishment of the day’s task, to be touching land again, even if it is a panoply of planks. Jetties are imbued with memories, of good and bad catches, and sometimes a prayer to have survived perilous experiences on the boat at sea. The composition is driven by a slanted white bar running down the middle, with modulated textures in a grey veneer and with pockets of red and light blue hues. Over time, the jetty becomes a nostalgic register and a marker in one’s journey when life was tougher. Awang has done another jetty work, double the size, in 2000/7 besides Pengkalan Senja (2002) with obvious twilight elements, and all centred around his hometown of Kuala Penyu in Sabah. The Marista works represent a more structured, refined and elegiac phase from his Essence Of Culture series.

Everything all around becomes parched, dessicated, shrivelled while the soil is starved of moisture and nutrients. The dryness can also cause wildfires, dust storms and is a bane to the health of man and animals. This lack of atmospheric circulation is a farmer’s dread, for without the elixir water, all the earlier efforts will come to zilch. There will be no harvest but thorns from this hydrometeorological spell. Such tenuous harmony between Man and Nature lies at the crux of Awang Damit Ahmad’s maiden Essence Of Culture (E.O.C., Intipati Budaya) repertoire, with his own brand of symbolisms related to land and life. But it’s not all dour lament, but stoic struggles to overcome the obstacles from a wellspring of hope. E.O.C. dates between 1985 to 1995. Is this the innocuous work that triggered or launched Awang Damit Ahmad’s celebrated Essence Of Culture (E.O.C., Intipati Budaya, 1985-1995) series? Though only regaling about childhood experiences and games played in his impoverished and insignificant village of Kuala Penyu (but Awang has since put Kuala Penyu on the world art map), it represents an integral ingredient in the E.O.C. narrative before the artistic repertoire was expanded to include implements used by the fisherman and the farmer, the bounty of the land, the natural environment and the finicky weather. The games run the gamut of Ting-Ting, fragments of the alphabet soup and the ole favourite of Noughts and Crosses, also known as Tic Tac Toe, where two players mark ‘X’ or ‘O’ on a three-by-three grid to complete a flourish that is horizontal, vertical or diagonal. This game does not even need pen and paper, sometimes it could be played on a sandy surface with a branch stick. There is a lot of ambiguous white space in the painting, which acts to hold the composition as well as to probably spell the mist of time. This must be one of the most unusual saccharine works by Awang Damit Ahmad, yes, the creator of the iconic series Essence Of Culture (E.O.C., Intipati Budaya), his autobiographical foray with its origins in an obscure fishing village in Sabah, Kuala Penyu. It was done after graduating from the Mara Institute of Technology where he was adjudged Best Student in 1983. With brush and spray painting, he conjured a spectacle of dusk with crimson hues and bluish dark environs, showing an adroit handling of colours and composition. Different shapes and forms are scattered all over the canvas, with a space largely consisting of various colours such as red, grey, beige and black take precedence over the rest of the objects. Those familiar with Awang Damit’s work are provided with the knowledge that his works are inspired by his memories, most of which are scattered, symbolic and garlanded with numerous emotions.
