Folio in original publisher's vellum with gilt brown and red decoration to covers and spine, with gilt and red decorative title to front cover and spine, with bevelled edges, with unpaginated card-stock leaves with engravings printed on India paper laid down.       Thomas Dalziel (Br., 1823-1906), "Caroling 1871" watercolor, signed lower right, snowy evening scene with Christmas carolers, in silver leaf frame with mat. One of The Four Brothers Dalziel, a highly productive firm of Victorian engravers founded in 1839 by George Dalziel (1815-1902) and his brother Edward Dalziel (1817-1905), Thomas Bolton Gilchrist Septimus Dalziel was a prolific illustrator and engraver himself.The Dalziel brothers worked with many important Victorian artists, producing illustrations for the burgeoning magazine and book market of the period. Among the artists they worked with were Arthur Boyd Houghton, Richard Doyle, John Gilbert, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and James McNeill Whistler. They cut the illustrations to Edward Lear's Book of Nonsense (1862); Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Their work is found in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, among many others - possibly even your own library! SS 14 x 20.5 in.; DOA 21.5 x 28 in.
