  • Signed Matthew Daly Rookwood Pottery Vase w/ Iris Glaze
    Aug. 04, 2022

Signed Matthew Daly Rookwood Pottery Vase w/ Iris Glaze

    Est: $600 - $800

Rookwood Pottery Vase by Matthew Andrew Daly (American, 1860-1937) ca. 1883 to 1903. Signed and numbered on base. A gorgeous ceramic vase of a classic form decorated with a single iris in relief on the exterior walls, embellished in buttercup yellow, spring green, and umber hues against a golden butterscotch and amber ground with a buttercup yellow interior, all under Rookwood's special Iris glaze. The vessel is marked on the base with the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by flames), identifying shape number "271", and a "MAD" (Matthew Andrew Daly) artist's mark. The incised "W" indicates that the design is under an Iris glaze - a clear high glaze that gives a photorealist effect. Size: 3.5" in diameter at widest point x 8.6" H (8.9 cm x 21.8 cm) The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists. Matthew Andrew Daly attended the Cincinnati School of Design from 1877 until 1880, and worked briefly for the Matt Morgan Art Pottery Company until he and his colleague, Nicholas Joseph Hirschfeld, went to Rookwood in 1883. Daly worked at Rookwood for 20 years and developed his own signature style, making him one of Rookwood's most sought after artists. Daly was also an accomplished portrait and landscape painter. Interestingly, Daly married another Rookwood artist, Olga Geneva Reed, just a few years before he passed away. Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #172004

Matthew A. Daly (1860-1937) for Rookwood Pottery earthenware Flowing Glaze vase with hyacinth decoration, shape number 915C Cincinnati, Ohio, 1901 high glazed ceramic impressed factory marks, incised artist's full signature 5 3/4"dia x 7"h Catalog Note: Flowing Glaze is a derivation of Rookwood's Iris glaze consisting of rich, opaque color, which tends to blend and flow over the decoration. It is an official Rookwood named glaze, which seems to have lasted from 1900 until 1901 and most examples are done by Daly. Given its short life span, it is safe to assume the glaze was not a commercial success.
