Richard Dalton 1715-1791- "Edward VI"; originally published circa 1770s, engraving after After Hans Holbein, the Younger 1497/1498-1543, together with nine further engravings from Portraits of Illustrious Personages of the Court of Henry VIII to include "Thom: Wiatt Knight; Fitz William Earl of Southampton; Edward Stanley Earle of Darbey; Judge More:Sr Thom: Mores Father; Phil: Melanchton" and others, 50x37cm, ea, in matching Hogarth frames. Note: Queen Caroline (1683-1737), found the original Holbien drawings in a bureau at Kensington Palace and asked Richard Dalton (Keeper of the King's drawings and medals) to have them copied and published. When Chamberlain took over Dalton's position in 1791 he also inherited the project. Chamberlain edited and published a folio edition of Holbein's work in 1792, printed and issued in parts over the next eight years by William Bulmer and Company, at the Shakespeare Printing-Office. For the 1792 edition, Chamberlaine called on Francesco Bartolozzi RA (1725-1815), to prepare a set of prints. Bartolozzi had developed his own technique of stipple engraving with printed colour to reproduce the look of the chalk drawings. The folio edition of Illustrious Personages was such a success that a large quarto edition was prepared in 1812. (10)

GUERCINO (BARBIERI, Giovanni Francesco, 1591-1666) -- BARTOLOZZI, Francesco (1727-1815) and Richard DALTON (1715?-1791), engravers. [Eighty-Two Prints engraved ... from the original Pictures and Drawings of Guercino in the Collection of His Majesty. London: John and Josiah Boydell, [c. 1800]. 2° (502 x 344mm). 82 plates after Guercino by Bartolozzi, Vitalba and others, one double-page, together with 12 plates by and after Guercino bound in at end. (Lacking title-page, some light even browning to a few plates; the last 12 plates remargined to size.) Contemporary half russia, spine elaborately tooled in blind, marbled endpapers and edges (joints cracked, edges rubbed, chips to head and tail caps). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY OF THE RECORD OF THE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS OF GUERCINO IN THE ROYAL COLLECTION. While on the Grand Tour, the Earl of Bute collected original drawings by the Bolognese artist, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino (1591-1666). These drawings were later given to George III and entered the Royal Collection. George III's librarian, Richard Dalton, met Francesco Bartolozzi in Italy in the early 1760s. This brought Bartolozzi to London in 1764 under the employ of Dalton. He worked on a series of etchings after Guercino. Other engravers on the project included Dalton himself, James Basire, Giovanni Vitalba and Lady Louisa Augusta Greville. The prints were bought by the London publishers John and Josiah Boydell, and published in two volumes, the first being the present work, the second entitled Seventy-three prints. Lowndes II, 953.

[DALTON, Richard (c.1715-1791). Antiquities and Views in Greece and Egypt, with the Manners and Customs of the Inhabitants, from Drawings made on the Spot. London: 1751?-81]. 2° (556 x 370mm). 79 plates on 76 sheets, including 5 double-page and one folding, engraved by Dalton, Basire, Mason, Radigues and others after Dalton, last plate on an 8° leaf mounted. Parallel text in English and French. (Small tear in margin of one leaf, occasional slight browning or staining.) Contemporary calf, gilt roll on covers with arms in the centre, gilt edges and turn-ins, spine gilt in compartments with title label, marbled endpapers (lightly rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance: Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme, probably Henry Pelham, 4 t h Duke (1785-1851; binding). THE DUKE OF NEWCASTLE'S COPY OF DALTON'S GREAT WORK, constituting four series of plates probably bound from the original separate series. Back from Greece and Egypt, Dalton published the plates respectively in 1751 (Greece), 1752 (Constantinople and Egypt), after 1771 (Halicarnassus' bas-reliefs) and 1781 (manners of inhabitants of Egypt). Before being issued together in 1791 with a common title, the first two sets were originally unnumbered plates with no accompanying text, while the third and fourth, partly numbered sets included a descriptive page on 'Basso Relievo's Discovered in Caria' and a 12-page 'Explanation of a Series of Prints, Relative to... the present Inhabitants of Egypt'. The present set is not bound in the usual order of the 1791 edition but follows the original order of publication, without any common title. The plates include in particular a double-page view of Constantinople. Atabey 310 (parts 1-2 only) and 311 (1791 ed.): 'Apparently the whole series was available for sale in 1781'; Blackmer 443 (1791 ed.); RIBA 780 (parts 1-2 only); Brunet II, 475 (1791 ed.); Cicognara 3497 (part 1 only); Colas 779 (1791 ed.); Harris 171 (1791 ed.).
