    • Richard Dalton 1715-1791- "Edward VI"; originally
      Jan. 12, 2010

Richard Dalton 1715-1791- "Edward VI"; originally

      Est: £400 - £600

Richard Dalton 1715-1791- "Edward VI"; originally published circa 1770s, engraving after After Hans Holbein, the Younger 1497/1498-1543, together with nine further engravings from Portraits of Illustrious Personages of the Court of Henry VIII to include "Thom: Wiatt Knight; Fitz William Earl of Southampton; Edward Stanley Earle of Darbey; Judge More:Sr Thom: Mores Father; Phil: Melanchton" and others, 50x37cm, ea, in matching Hogarth frames. Note: Queen Caroline (1683-1737), found the original Holbien drawings in a bureau at Kensington Palace and asked Richard Dalton (Keeper of the King's drawings and medals) to have them copied and published. When Chamberlain took over Dalton's position in 1791 he also inherited the project. Chamberlain edited and published a folio edition of Holbein's work in 1792, printed and issued in parts over the next eight years by William Bulmer and Company, at the Shakespeare Printing-Office. For the 1792 edition, Chamberlaine called on Francesco Bartolozzi RA (1725-1815), to prepare a set of prints. Bartolozzi had developed his own technique of stipple engraving with printed colour to reproduce the look of the chalk drawings. The folio edition of Illustrious Personages was such a success that a large quarto edition was prepared in 1812. (10)

LITERATURE C. von Prybram-Gladona, Unbekannte Zeichnungen alter Meister aus europ„ischem Privatbesitz, Munich, 1969, nos. 46 and 47, illustrated (as Italian School, circa 1560). N. Turner, European Drawings, The John Paul Getty Museum, IV, (awaiting publication), under no. 19. NOTES Part of a group of about twelve drawings with roundel portraits of the Orsini family. One of these drawings, of Napoleone Orsini II, is in the Getty Museum, another two are in a private collection in Paris and another, of Paolo Giordano Orsini I, was with Alister Matthews in 1964. Nicholas Turner, in his catalogue, proposes an attribution to the Sienese artist Bernardino Capitelli, one of the artists employed by Cassiano dal Pozzo to execute copies for his Museo Cartaceo. Cassiano's Paper Museum was bought by Pope Clement XI Albani (see lot 52), whose family sold it to King George III. Richard Dalton, who was in charge of the transaction, seems to have removed this drawing from the collection along with a number of others. Nicholas Turner suggested that this series of drawings reproduced 16th Century maiolica dishes or plaquettes illustrating members of the Orsini family. Another drawing from Cassiano dal Pozzo's collection, with his characteristic numbering, was sold at Christie's New York, 28 January 2000, lot 18. The Orsini family from Bracciano was granted the eponymous Dukedom by Pope Pius IV in 1560. One of Stendhal's most celebrated short stories, Le Duc de Bracciano, is devoted to the Orsini family.
