Northwest Coast Indians, Three Scarce Cartes de Visite by Frederick Dally

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

All carrying his imprint on the back, Frederick Dally, Fort Street, Victoria. Vancouver Island, B.C., all circa 1866-1870. These rare portraits depict two Indian men, the third is a group of four women posed in front of a building with painted front and totem pole. Frederick Dally (1838-1914) emigrated from England to Victoria, Canada in September of 1862. In June of 1866 he opened his studio on the South side of Fort Street. That same year he joined the HMS Scout as a photographer, circumnavigating Vancouver Island and photographing the Southern Kwakiutl. His studio was in operation until Sept. of 1870 when he sold it, and went to Philadelphia to study dentistry, and then returned home to England. Many of his negatives were ultimately acquired by Richard and Hannah Maynard.
