JEAN-PHILIPPE DALLAIREA NYMPH INTO THE ST. LAURENT’S RIVERgouachesigned, dated ‘59 and inscribed “Vence, A.M.”; also signed, titled, dated and inscribed on the reverse 14 ins x 18 ins; 33 cms x 44.5 cms Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoJean-Philippe Dallaire (1916-1965) was a painter, an illustrator for the National Film Board of Canada, and a teacher. He had some formal art training in Canada and then in Paris, 1938-40 at the Studios of Sacred Art run by Maurice Denis and Georges Desvalières, and at the André Lhote Academy. In Paris, the work of Picasso, Pellan, and the Surrealists were a revelation, and would have a lasting influence on his art. He was also interested in naive art and children’s drawings. His large body of work shows a variety of stylistic influences and is imaginative and original. In 1958, he left his family and moved to Vence in Alpes-Maritime on the French Riviera, where he died in 1965. A Nymph into the St. Laurent’s River [sic] is a work of fantasy, painted by Dallaire in France, far from the Canadian river that was discovered by Jacques Cartier on June 9, 1534 and named after Saint Lawrence of Rome. The ninth of June was also Dallaire’s birthday, and this may have been painted on that day in June 1959. St. Lawrence (a lesser-known, martyred saint) has been transformed into the spirit of the river, appearing as a fish with a human head, holding a cross (one of his attributes) before him. The saint met a horrible death—he was roasted alive—and the flame above his head may refer to that event. A red-eyed cyclops (likely the artist himself) in the bottom left corner is weeping, while an impish figure to the right may be one of the saint’s torturers. Dallaire had done a number of religious paintings and a mural for the Dominican convent in Ottawa in 1936, and had attended the Studios of Sacred Art in Paris, whose aim was to teach artists to produce religious art that was modern and relevant. Estimate: $8,000–12,000

Such uncertainty may have led Dallaire to identify with the Christian martyr, St. Sebastian, who had been violently attacked for his beliefs not once, (the first time, most famously, with arrows) but twice (with cudgels this time, which would be the instrument of his martyrdom). Despite the threat to Sebastian's health that the arrows presented, he, like Dallaire, would recover from the assault.   Sebastian has been a favourite subject of painters and sculptors for centuries, from early renaissance masters to Damien Hirst. Not only does this event provide artists with material for high, if violent, drama, but artists also seem to associate with the saint's poise under extreme circumstance, and his miraculous ability to overcome adversity. Dallaire undertook other works with religious themes during this period including L'Annonciation of 1952-53 and Défroqués of 1953-54.This painting is inscribed "Narbonne" on the reverse. While the people of Narbonne, a small village in the south of France near the Spanish border, lay claim to their town being the site of Sebastian's maternal home, little is recorded about his early life. Dallaire was clearly aware of the local legend and, as such, recorded the information on his painting.  Estimate: $50,000–60,000

Though he had been offered the support of two Montreal collectors which would enable him to quit his job at the NFB in order to devote himself to painting full-time, he did not accept. Juggling art making with his day job must have been gruelling, but perseverance paid off. In December 1957, Dallaire was recognized in France’s leading newspaper, Le Droit, where he was described as a “brilliant French Canadian artist.”

While in Paris, Dallaire was confronted by Cubism and Surrealism in the works of painters such as Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. These styles would go on to influence Dallaire’s oeuvre, amalgamating with the artist’s sensible, working-class beginnings to culminate in a humanistic approach to modernism. In contrast to the often impersonal qualities of these modern styles, Dallaire’s works are festive and highly personal. Dallaire used the strategies of abstraction to feel liberated in his work: transforming highly schematized forms into rich and animated representations. Michèle Grandbois writes, “Dans la nature luxuriante qui baigne des scènes aux couleurs chatoyantes, la douceur de vivre s'empare des hommes et des femmes, d'ici et d'ailleurs, d'un autre siècle très certainement.” This painting bears a strong resemblance to still lifes which we know the artist to have executed during his time in Vence, France, where he lived from 1959 until his passing in 1965. Comparisons indicate that the work was most likely painted during the later portion of this timeframe. The work was entered into the Dominion Gallery inventory books in 1964, alongside fifty-five other Dallaire works that came into the gallery between November 1963 and August 1965. Given the gallery’s contract system, which provided monthly payments to artists in exchange for an agreed upon number of works, one may speculate that this painting was acquired by Max Stern directly from Dallaire himself. Inspired by the light, the plentifulness, and the colours of the Mediterranean, there is a spontaneity and an edginess to this still life which evokes both Cézanne and Braque.“À Vence,” says Grandbois, “Jean Dallaire s'abandonne entièrement au ludisme de la couleur, de la ligne et de la texture…"

During this year, Jean-Philippe Dallaire executed several major works including the mural Québec sous le Régime français at the Industrial Alliance Head Office in Québec City. This playful work of a startlingly successful bear hunt, contrasts the serious nature of his political works and alludes to the skills he would hone as a draughtsman at the National Film Board of Canada in Ottawa (1952-1956).

JEAN-PHILIPPE DALLAIREFEMME ASSISEgouache on paper, laid down on cardsigned and dated '46 (sight) 8.75 ins x 5.25 ins; 22.2 cms x 13.3 cms Provenance:Private Collection, MontrealNote:Painted early in his career, Dallaire's Femme Assise does not let on whether the viewer has caught her in a moment of thought, or in a coy gesture of secrecy. Melded by colours and patterns to the chair on which she sits, Dallaire positions the woman as a modern, sibylline figure. While her elongated limbs and supple feminine form beguile us, it is her bolted tendrils of Medusa-like hair that prevent us from averting our gaze.

Jean-Philippe Dallaire 1916 - 1965 Canadian gouache on paper Qui est coupable? 17 1/4 x 24 5/8 inches 43.8 x 62.5 centimeters signed, titled, dated 1948 and inscribed ""Canada"" Provenance:A Prominent Montreal Family Estate Jean-Philippe Dallaire worked as an animator for the National Film Board of Canada, and had a strong interest in tapestry-making. He was also interested in Pablo Picasso, the Surrealists, and playing with fracturing and distorting the human form. His complex, imaginative, sometimes macabre works show signs of all these things, yet the circumstances of his life - having spent four years in an internment camp outside of Paris during World War II - give us cause to inquire more deeply into his imagery. In Qui est coupable? (Who is Guilty?), a man and a woman sit on chairs under a feathery sun. It seems to be a beach scene, as indicated by their hats and the gaily-wrapped pole. This work was painted just three years after Dallaire's release from internment. Perhaps we are looking at the artist and his wife - she was also interned - reflecting on their experiences during the war? Their gaze toward each other tells us little, so perhaps it is a simpler scene, having less to do with the politics of war and more about the politics between men and women.

Jean-Philippe Dallaire 1916 - 1965 Canadian oil on canvas Le fonctionnaire 34 x 26 inches 86.3 x 66 centimeters signed, titled and dated 1957 and on verso signed, titled, dated 13 Sept. 1957 and inscribed ""Ville St-Laurent, P. Qué., Canada"" Provenance:Galerie Camille Hébert, Montreal A Prominent Montreal Family Estate Jean-Philippe Dallaire worked in a variety of styles, drawing on elements of Cubism and Surrealism, and often used humour and caricature in his work. His palette, like his style, was equally wide-ranging. In this brilliantly-hued portrait of an official, Dallaire exaggerates the official's hat and gives him a ridiculous moustache. The gaudily-painted uniform seems more costume-like than official, and the fact that Dallaire shows him holding a bouquet distracts from and undermines his role as a member of the bureaucracy. Dallaire often commented in a humorous, tongue-in-cheek manner on politics and French society in his works, using riotous colours and a fine painting technique that allowed his many layers of careful underpainting to show through one another. The official's clownlike face and wavering figure contribute to the comment that Dallaire is making on authority, officials and societal relationships.
