Jean Augustin Daiwaille (6 August 1786 – 11 April 1850) was a Dutch portrait painter. Daiwaille was born in Cologne, and went to Amsterdam as a young man, where he studied under Adriaan de Lelie. He was director of the Rijksakademie from 1820 to 1826. After that time he resided at Rotterdam, where he was very successful in painting portraits, and where he died in 1850. There is by him one etching, which is scarce.

His daughter Elise Thérèse married one of his pupils, the painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. His son Alexander Joseph Daiwaille also became a painter.

    HULK, ABRAHAM , the Elder (London 1813-1897 Zevenaar / Netherlands), Painting: " seascape ", oil on wood, signed lower right "A. Hulk". Narrative and atmospheric depiction of boats in a turbulent sea. The marine painter Hulk first took lessons from the portrait painter Jean Augustin Daiwaille (1786-1850) and then studied at the academy in Amsterdam. 23 x 29 cm (plate rejoined in lower third, older retouchings, varnish renewed).HULK, ABRAHAM , der Ältere (London 1813-1897 Zevenaar / Niederlande), Gemälde: "Seestück", Öl auf Holz, unten rechts signiert "A. Hulk". Erzählerische und atmosphärische Schilderung von Booten in unruhiger See. Der Marinemaler Hulk nahm zunächst Unterricht bei dem Portraitmaler Jean Augustin Daiwaille (1786-1850) und studierte anschließend an der Akademie in Amsterdam. 23 x 29 cm (Platte im unteren Drittel neu gefügt, ältere Retuschen, Firnis erneuert).

Signiert. Auf chamoisfarbenem Bütten mit Wasserzeichen „P“. 25,4 x 19,1 cm. Verso mit alter Bezeichnung in brauner Feder: „Dessin de M. Daiwaille (Signé) / Vente de M. Watemare 1864“ und am Oberrand alt montiert (französische Montierung mit appliziertem beschriftetem Etikett). Hauptsächlich im Randbereich schwach gebräunt. Daiwaille, dessen Familie bereits 1788 in die Niederlande gezogen war, war vor allem als Porträtist gefragt und einer der ersten niederländischen Lithographen (AKL online). [ms]

    A girl in a white dress, A girl in blue dress with red coral necklace, Portraits of a lady and a gentleman. pastel on paper (4), 30,5x23 cm, 40x32 cm and 37,5x30 cm (2) Provenance: Via inheritance in the sitters' family. -------------- These are almost certainly Hendrik Frans Martinus Engelman (Amsterdam 1812-1878) and his wife Cornelia Hakbijl (Amsterdam 1808-1878). Together with two of their children: Maria Louisa Engelman (Rotterdam 1836-1884) and Henriette Louise Engelman (Rotterdam 1837-1922). Henriette married mr J.J.F. Boneski, who was the owner of café Boneski in Rotterdam near the Hofplein. After the construction of the first electric train connection from Netherlands, the Hofplein line, Café Boneski was demolished and replaced by well known Café Loos.

After that time he resided at Rotterdam, where he was very successful in portraits in pastel, his speciality. The family Van Tomputte, as pictured in lots 1122-1125, originated from Rotterdam. The painter's daughter Elise Thérèse married one of his pupils, the well known landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. His son Alexander Joseph Daiwaille also became a painter.
