            Oct. 16, 2024

CIRCLE OF MICHAEL DAHL (BRITISH 1656/59-1743), PORTRAIT OF HENRY GREY

            Est: £1,500 - £2,500

CIRCLE OF MICHAEL DAHL (BRITISH 1656/59-1743)PORTRAIT OF HENRY GREY, DUKE OF KENT (1671-1740), HALF-LENGTH, WEARING THE ORDER OF THE GARTEROil on canvasInscribed 'Henry Grey Duke of Kent Anno 1731 Father of Amabell Lady Glenorchy' (upper right)76 x 63.5cm (29¾ x 25 in.)Illustrated:The Connoisseur, May 1965, p.4This painting was possibly at Wrest Park, Bedfordshire in c. 1740. An inventory for the mansion lists a number of portraits of the Duke although the sparsity of their respective descriptions prohibit a firm identification (ed. J. Collett-White, 'Inventories of Bedfordshire Country Houses 1714-1830', The Bedfordshire Historical Record Society, vol. 74, 1995, pp. 251-273). Furthermore, three portraits of the Duke of Kent were sold at the 1917 Wrest Park sale of paintings and drawings (Christie, Manson & Woods, 16 November 1917, lots 8, 26 and 53). Lot 8 in this sale, 'Portrait of Henry, Duke of Kent, in brown coat embroidered with silver and gold, 50 in. by 40 in.' is possibly another closely related ¾ length version of the portrait offered here, sold Abell Auction Company, Los Angeles on 15 October 1995, lot 13, which has the same dimensions as lot 8 in the 1917 sale.Henry, 12th Earl and future Duke of Kent (1671-1740), inherited Wrest Park in 1701. A leading courtier and politician, he had been on the Grand Tour in 1690, returning with an appreciation of classicism. At court, throughout his tenure, he was appointed Gentleman of the Bedchamber, Constable of Windsor Castle, Lord Steward of the Household, and Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal while as a politician he held the posts of Privy Councillor, and Lord Chamberlain on the recommendation of Queen Anne's then confidante, Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough The latter role was relinquished when he was created Duke of Kent. In 1715, he engaged the well-known Italian architect, Giacomo Leoni, to modify Wrest Park. Leoni's plans were shown to other leading Italian architects such as Juvarra for their approval by the Duke's two sons whilst on their own Grand Tour. However, finally, the South Sea Bubble and the premature deaths of the Duke's sons deterred the Duke from embarking on Wrest Park's refurbishment.

After the death of her son, William Bodvel, he named his cousin Margaret Lewis of Llys Dulas as his heir. Consequently, this portrait would have been hanging at Llys Dulas at the latest from William's death in 1759, until the family sold the property in the 1950sLlys Dulas was a modest property which included the land covering half of Parys Mountain. The Hughes family fortunes were changed immeasurably when it was discovered in the mid-18th century that the mountain contained Europe's largest copper mine, making the Hughes family vast fortune, and eventually earning them a peerage. This work is typical of Michael Dahl's portraiture of the early 18th century and has remained in the family since is it was painted.

Anne Dillingham (died 1762) was married to Offspring Blackall (1655-1716) around 1697. Her husband was later to become Bishop of Exeter and Clerk of the Closet of Queen Anne. As the bishop’s wife, Anne Blackall was socially well placed to have her portrait painted by one of the most fashionable artists of the time. Indeed, her husband had his likeness painted by Dahl and the painting installed in the episcopal palace in Exeter. She is depicted as a paragon of late seventeenth-century style, wearing an elegant blue and white dress draped with an amber-coloured shawl, her hair is raised but unrestricted as locks fall around and behind her neck and shoulders. Her wealth and standing are ever-so subtlety indicated by the diamond brooch atop her bodice and the diamond button on her sleeve, both jewels more revealed than concealed with the little folds of drapery gently, but strategically covering part of them. The present lot, which can be attributed to Dahl on stylistic grounds and on the circumstantial evidence of her husband having been portrayed by the artist, has remained in the sitter’s family to the present day.

Mrs. Theodora Cowper around 1710, whilst the artist was at the height of his popularity amongst the elite in London society. The confident brush work and soft skin tones are typical of Dahl's work of this period and can be easily dated to c. 1710 when looking at the loose draperies and elevated hair. The sitter was born Theodora Kirk and firstly married Joseph Stepney MP in 1693. Her husband was the first cousin of John Stepney, 4th Bt. and Justina van Dyck, the only daughter of the great artist Sir Anthony van Dyck. After the death of her first husband in 1725, Theodora married the Hon. Spencer Cowper, MP and Chief Justice at the court in Chester. Spencer's brother William was the first Lord High Chancellor and had been made 1st Earl Cowper in 1718. Although Spencer and Theodora had no children together, it is clear to see the affection she held for her sons-in-law as she left her estate, including a 3% ownership share of the Bank of England, almost entirely to them. This portrait is also mentioned in her will, dating from 1750, noting that she wished to leave it to her husband's youngest son, the Reverend John Cowper. As John had no children it then passed to Spencer's other son William, whose family it remained until it was sold in 1930. This portrait is particularly unusual within Dahl's oeuvre for the fact that it depicts the sitter in the allegorical guise as Diana, goddess of the hunt. Dahl rarely painted his sitters in allegorical guises and in this instance, it is almost certain that the artist took inspiration from Sir Peter Lely's portrait of Frances Stuart, Duchess of Richmond, located in the Royal Collection. Lely's portrait of Frances Stuart was part of the famed Windsor Beauties series and would have been widely known. The goddess Diana, also known by the Greek name Artemis, was associated with elegance and purity and is often shown holding a bow with a crescent moon on her head, both attributes that Dahl has included in this portrait. Dahl closely echo's Lely's composition, however in turning Theodora more to the viewer he endows a greater sense of grace and poise. The rich landscape in the background is no doubt emblematic of an English Arcadian scene that had become the favoured setting for aristocratic sitters from the time of van Dyck in the previous century.

ATTRIBUTED TO MICHAEL DAHL (STOCKHOLM 1659-1743 LONDON) ATTRIBUTED TO MICHAEL DAHL (STOCKHOLM 1659-1743 LONDON) Portrait of Anne Blackall (née Dilingham) oil on canvas, oval 76.2 x 63.5 cm (30 x 25 in) framed PROVENANCE The sitter, c.1697; By descent through the family to the present owner.
