*CHINESE SCHOOL IN THE MANNER OF BADA SHANREN ???? (circa 1626-1705) BORN AS ZHU DA ?? Bird on rock Ink wash on paper Signed on the upper right corner with the artist hu?y? (??) signature Bearing two red artist seals on the upper right 33,6 x 29,3 cm Provenance: a Private Collection. Notes: 1. Bada Shanren began painting and writing poetry in his early childhood. He later developed a career as a professional painter adopting a series of descriptive pseudonyms, most notably Bada Shanren by which he is most often known today. The stylized vertical writing of his pseudonym Bada Shanren (????) looks like the characters for laugh (?) and cry (?), thus by signing his paintings he implied his confusion and feelings of grief for the fate of his country and home. His paintings feature sharp brush strokes which are attributed to the sideways manner by which he held his brush. In the 1930s, Chinese painter Zhang Daqian (?????, 1899-1983) produced several forgeries of Bada Shanren's works. 2. A huaya or ‘Flower print’ is a stylized signature or mark used in East Asia cultures in place of a true signature. Originating from China, the huaya was historically used by prominent figures such as government officials and artists. 3. This painting of a bird on rock is similar to that of the anban or anwan album preserved in the collection of the Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum, Sumimoto Collection, Lyoto, Japan. Click HERE to see the related painting said to be by the hand of Bada Shanren. IMPORTANT NOTICE: *This lot is under temporary importation. An extra VAT will be applied to the final invoice. The rate will depend on the final country of destination. The sole buyers based in Ireland will be subject to an extra 13,5% VAT. Please contact our office (yuchen@adams.ie) for further information. ???? ????- ????1626-1705 NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. ZHU DA (BADA SHANREN) (c. 1626 - 1705), ink on paper, hanging scroll, two birds on a rock, 35.2 x 55.3cm Provenance: With collector’s seal of Ye Jingkui (1874-1949), Edward Osman Bruce Cowen, acquired ca. 1940s, thence by descent Exhibited: Ashmoleum Museum, Oxford, 2016-2018 Edward ‘Ted’ Cowen led a fascinating and extremely active life. He arrived in Tientsin in the late 1920s to live with his father who was the then editor of the North China Morning Post. He was invited by the great Jesuit philosopher Pere Teilhard de Chardin to accompany him on one of his treks into inner Mongolia but was prohibited from going by his father. Instead he became a cub reporter for the Far Eastern Times and after the death of his father, moved to Peking where he used his fluent Chinese as a buyer and manager for Henningsons, a well-known trader in furs and pig bristles, which necessitated long trips by camel to inner Mongolia. In Peking he lived for some years in Wei Shan Tsui Lao T'ang, (Hall of Greatest Happiness and Goodness) in Prince Ch'ing's Palace within Ch'eng Wang and enjoyed an exuberant social life. He was a frequent dinner guest of Alexandria Munthe, mother of Alexander Grantham, (later to become Governor of HK), and counted amongst his friends Henri Vetch, publisher and bookseller working out The Grand Hotel and whom he met later in Hong Kong, and Alfie Koehn, whose Lotus Court Publications worked out of 23 Ta Pai Feng Hotung. Throughout his time in China he acquired curios and built up an extraordinary collection of imperial costumes and embroideries which today forms the backbone of Hong Kong Museum of Art’s collection of Chinese textiles. His collection of oracle bones were gifted to China via Prof. Chi Wenxin in 1982 and are recorded as the Cowen Collection by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. His son, the present owner of this Zhu Da painting, well remembers his father describing how he bought a painting directly from Qi Baishi at his studio. After surviving pneumonia in PUMC and with the advance of the Japanese restricting life in the capital, he was recruited to head-up the Reuters office in Shanghai as their only foreigner. In due course he was gaoled for nine months before being released as part of a prisoner exchange arranged by the IRC and the Swedish Govt. and sailed westward aboard the Kungsholm. He spent his final decade living and working in Hong Kong and died there in 1974 aged sixty four. Please refer to department for condition report

AFTER ZHU DA, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) A CHINESE PAINTED SCROLL DEPICTING THE TANG POET LI BAI, SIGNED BADA SHANREN (1626 - AFTER 1705), AFTER ZHU DA Ink and Colour on paper, framed Illustrating, the famed Tang poet Li Bai (701-762), who raises his ink brush to the distant mountains, assisted here by a disciple who holds the duan ink stone up to his master. An inscription appears to the left hand side of the scroll, which loosely translated is: "By the calm of the waters, he writes countless letters; Endowed by Heaven more than all others. The poem just scribed, as though a new one by Yang Xiong; His Fame Greater than that of Mount Penglai." Painted for enjoyment by Bada Shanren [Note: Yang Xiong (53 BCE-18 CE) was a Han dynasty scholar, poet, and author famed for his philosophical writings and fu poetry compositions; and Mount Penglai is a mystical land where the immortals lived.] Provenance: The known provenance relating to this painting, together with the selected subject matter, which can be traced back for more than a century makes it really quite an extraordinary, and truly unique work. If only Li Bai's brush, poised mid-air could recount the tale… At first in the possession of Mr. Willard Straight (1808-1918), a handsome young American diplomat, banker and artist who had a career in the Far East "that Midas himself might have envied", who married Dorothy Whitney, the daughter of legendary millionaire William C. Whitney. It is thought that Willard Straight and his wife, passed on this painting of Li Bai and his Disciple, originally purchased in China to their son Michael Straight. Michael Straight's biography appears in: "Last of the Cold War Spies - The Life of Michael Straight. The Only American in Britain's Cambridge Spy Ring'" by Roland Perry, and details how he became an MI5 Secret Agent, who eventually admitted to having worked as a spy for the Russians. During the Second World War, Michael became acquainted with an extraordinary South African man, named Oscar Oeser (1904-1983). A fine, trimly built gentleman, with a keen, narrow gaze and neat moustache. Oeser appreciated fine art, literature and music; he spoke several languages, supported progressive education, read voraciously, and had a formidable and penetrating intellect. He had been Michael's Professor, and was remarkably, also an elite member of the MI5, and was daringly part of the impressive group who helped to decode Enigma during the war! At some point, during this active period, Michael Straight gifted the Li Bai painting to Oscar, as a sign of his gratitude and respect, and the work was gratefully received. The painting has thence by descent, been passed to the current owner. The subject matter is equally compelling. Li Bai with his disciple by his side and may have mirrored the relationship between this modern day Teacher and Pupil as well.
