Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Antonio Da Ros (Italian, 1936-2012); Cenedese (Italy) Marking(s); notes: no marking(s) apparent Materials: glass Dimensions (H, W, D): 4.5"h, 9.5"dia Additional Information: Provenance: Private Collection, Ithaca, New York. About the collection: The late collector's wife recalls their first glass purchase in a London antique shop circa 1985, which ignited a 30+ year passion for the genre. The couple and their daughter acquired pieces individually during their travels around Western Europe, Toronto, and New York, and ultimately amassed around 300 vessels and sculptures by artists including Fulvio Bianconi, Toots Zynsky, Carlo Scarpa, Ercole Barovier, Paolo Venini, Vittorio Ferro and others. "My husband became a student of the art he collected," recalls Mrs. N. and their daughter. "With each new artist he admired, he would buy books about them, and the biographies and catalogs became catalysts for acquiring more pieces. He was always looking for variety, and he would seek out individual pieces to round out a segment of the collection. When something caught his eye, he pounced on it, and if he couldn't have that particular piece, he'd search for one like it."

  • ANTONIO DA ROS (Italy, 1936 - 2012) for Cenedese. Artistic glass, ca. 1960's. Glass.
    Dec. 11, 2024

ANTONIO DA ROS (Italy, 1936 - 2012) for Cenedese. Artistic glass, ca. 1960's. Glass.

    Est: €800 - €900

ANTONIO DA ROS (Italy, 1936 - 2012) for Cenedese. Artistic glass, ca. 1960's. Glass. Measurements: 12 x 16 x 16 cm. Antonio da Ros graduated in 1957 from the Istituto Superiore di Arti Decorativo 'Carmini' in Venice, obtaining the title of professor of decorative arts and architecture. In 1958 he began working at the glass factory gino Cenedese (then Ars Cenedese Murano). The presence of Mr. Da Ros remained permanent at the Cenedese glass factory, always working in close collaboration with the master glass artisans. Under his art direction, the factory developed various decorative lines of contemporary design, always at the highest level. First, with the stylized shapes with immersion of colored glass; in recent years, with the technique of 'scavo' glass (a particular glass finish, similar to glass brought to light in archaeological excavations) an important decorative line has been introduced in several new creations, all of them of great appeal for the simplicity of the lines, the preciousness of the material and the modernity of the colors. His mature works were a return to the traditional Murano techniques of hand-blown glass, but reinterpreted with a contemporary sensibility; such as the 'Venice Dreams' collection, as well as the 'Venezia I' and 'Venezia II' collections.

Her obsession with color and design began early in life. She followed in her mother’s footsteps to attend the Cleveland Institute of Art on a scholarship, the start of an “endless academic career” and the ideal outlet for her drive to collect, study, and write.   While in graduate school Leslie went to Puerto Vallarta and met her future husband Ramon. They shared a passion for beauty in nature and in art. “We learned and wrote about many topics: Italian, Scandinavian, and American glass, Art Deco designs, Mexican silver, Herman Miller furniture, and so on. We traveled around the United States to photograph private and museum collections. That said, Murano glass was and still is our favorite.” The selection of Murano glass offered in this auction was amassed over 30-40 years, most collected prior to the mid-1990s, and reflects the contents of four of Leslie Pina’s books. Palm Beach Modern Auctions would like to thank Dr. Pina for sharing her personal stories about her time as an educator, writer, and collector, and her love of beautiful objects. More details from our interview can be found in the listing photos.

ANTONIO DA ROS, (Italy, 1936 - 2012). Vase. Murano, second half of the 20th century. Blown Murano glass.

    Est: €500 - €600

ANTONIO DA ROS, (Italy, 1936 - 2012). Vase. Murano, second half of the 20th century. Blown Murano glass. Measurements: 21 x 12 x 6 cm. This elegant vase is entirely made of hand-blown Murano glass with an opaline finish in bluish tones. Antonio da Ros graduated in 1957 from the Istituto Superiore di Arti Decorativo 'Carmini' in Venice, obtaining the title of professor of decorative arts and architecture. In 1958 he started working at the gino Cenedese glass factory (then Ars Cenedese Murano). Mr. Da Ros remained a permanent presence at the Cenedese glassworks, always working in close collaboration with the master glass artisans. Under his art direction, the factory developed various decorative lines of contemporary design, always at the highest level. First, with the stylised shapes with immersion of coloured glass; in recent years, with the technique of 'scavo' glass (a particular glass finish, similar to glass brought to light in archaeological excavations), an important decorative line has been introduced in several new creations, all of which are highly attractive for the simplicity of the lines, the preciousness of the material and the modernity of the colours. His latest works were a return to traditional Murano hand-blown glass techniques, but reinterpreted with a contemporary sensibility; such as the 'venecia dreams' collection, as well as the 'Venezia I' and 'Venezia II' collections. The high value of Murano glass is explained by the artisanal and secret process of its makers. Made on the Italian island of Murano, this glass has special properties and offers colours and shapes unlike any other glass. The history of Murano glass manufacturing dates back to the 8th century. By the 12th century Venice had become extremely popular for its fine glass. To keep the glass-making business unique and profitable, a law was passed in 1271 stating that no foreign glass could be imported for manufacture and no foreign glass workers could be hired. However, in the 13th century all glassmaking furnaces were moved by law from Venice to Murano, because the fires in them posed a great risk to the wooden structures of Venice. In combination, these two laws ensure that Murano glass is still unique today; created by artists and craftsmen from a small group of islands in Italy. The secrets of glass making have been passed down from father to son and from master to apprentice.
