Amy Cutler New York, (Born 1974) Villi, 1996 gouache on paper Provenance: Leslie Tonkonow Gallery, NY. Biography from the Archives of askART: A Brooklyn-based artist born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Amy Cutler "paints small and intricate paintings that depict costumed women participating in strange activities that seem, nevertheless, oddly routine and 'normal' in the world in which they exist. Her dreamlike images recall the detailed work of the Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte, brothers Grimm Fairy Tales and the Stories of Lewis Carroll. Her delicate gouache painting on paper are charming icons of absurdity."(Dreisbach 24) On the surface, a compilation of her drawings and paintings, many of them on wood, appear to be the contents of a child's coloring book, but have dark references that suggest underlying themes of poverty, unhappiness, violence, etc. One of her drawings, Traction (2002) shows young girls pulling a tractor with their teeth and dragging a farmhouse off its foundation with their braids. Although her cast of characters has male figures, her dominant images are countryfied females who seldom look happy or content. Cutler studied at Cooper Union School of Art in New York City, where she earned a BFA degree.
