        (GEORGE WASHINGTON) ELEANOR PARKE CUSTIS LEWIS (1779 - 1852) "Nelly", granddaughter of Martha Washington and the step-granddaughter of George Washington. Informally adopted by the Washingtons and raised at Mount Vernon. She entertained guests at three presidential mansions, in New York and in Philadelphia, and she is buried adjacent to the Washingtons at Mount Vernon. A.L.S. "Eleanor P. Lewis", 3pp. 4to., Washington, Feb. 19 [1804] to Mary Pinckney in Charleston. In part: "...We live at Woodlawn in a small part of our intended House...our poor little Frances is a constant comfort, Had my Martha and my little son lived, we should have been as fortunate Parents as any...I went to Harpers Ferry to the house where you and General Pinckney resided, and viewed it with regret...I wish Gen'l Pinckney and yourself could be induced to visit us in Frederick...I live now in sight of Mount Vernon, and it is a continued source of uneasiness to reflect on times past which can never be recalled...". Moderate toning to first page, integral address leaf detached, else very good. George Washington had passed away four years earlier, and Martha two years earlier.
