          Est: €1,400 - €1,600

JOSEP CUSACHS (Montpellier, France, 1851 - Barcelona, 1908). "Soldier". Mixed media on paper. Signed. Measurements: 27 x 15 cm; 40 x 26 cm (frame). José Cusachs was born accidentally in France, since his parents were there on a trip, but his art and his life were always linked to two localities: Barcelona and Mataró. In 1865, after passing a competitive examination, he entered the Artillery Academy to pursue a military career. However, in 1882, after a brilliant career that led him to be Captain of the Army for war merits, he asked for retirement to devote himself to painting. Trained in Barcelona under the direction of Simón Gómez, he completed his artistic studies with a stay in Paris, in the studio of Édouard Détaille, one of the greatest experts in military themes, a genre that would become Cusachs' favorite. During these years he would make his work known through individual exhibitions, such as the ones he held regularly from 1884 at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, always obtaining great success in sales and critics. In 1890 he was already a regular exhibitor at the gallery, where he showed new works every week. The bond between Cusachs and the Sala Parés was so deep, in fact, that after the painter's death the gallery fell into a period of absolute decadence. Cusachs also participated in official competitions; in 1887 he obtained notable recognition at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid with three paintings, one of which was acquired by the regent María Cristina ("En el campo de maniobras"). In 1891 he participated in the Berlin Exhibition and won the Gold Medal for his work "Maneuvers of division". Cusachs also stood out as a famous military portraitist, and painted, among others, General Prim, King Alfonso XIII in military uniform and Mexican President Profirio Díaz. The bulk of his work is collected in the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid and in the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

JOSEP CUSACHS (Montpellier, France, 1851 - Barcelona, 1908). "Transfer of the Wounded, 1890. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. It presents slight faults in the area of the sky. Size: 75 x 120 cm; 90 x 135 cm (frame). The pictorial genius of Cusachs lay above all in his tremendous plastic and conceptual sensibility to divert the military theme (in which traditionally the epic celebration had prevailed) towards intimate situations, samples of comradeship, and to show the suffering in the battlefield. He never painted the wars themselves but focused on the before or after, their antechambers or their sad backyards: here we see soldiers carrying their wounded comrades on stretchers. The lowered heads, the slow advance of the retreating army, the cloaks covering tired shoulders, the uniforms glinting metallic under a leaden sky... make for a scene of great emotional intensity. The mastery of the drawing and the bold use of light are translated into soft chromatic shifts. The ability to capture the joint movement of large masses of people set in a landscape tarnished with melancholy is another of the attributes of this great painter. José Cusachs was born accidentally in France, as his parents were travelling there, but his art and his life were always linked to two places: Barcelona and Mataró. In 1865, after passing a competitive examination, he entered the Artillery Academy for a military career. In 1865, after passing a competitive examination, he entered the Artillery Academy to pursue a military career. Trained in Barcelona under the direction of Simón Gómez, he completed his artistic studies with a stay in Paris, in the studio of Édouard Détaille, one of the greatest experts in military themes, a genre that would be Cusachs' favorite. Within the military themes, this artist was especially inclined to cavalry, due to his passion for horses. In 1880 he settled in Barcelona and began an extensive production of military studies, which were reproduced in the work of F. Barado entitled "La vida militar en España" (Military life in Spain). Previously, before leaving the Army, he had worked as a caricaturist and chronicler of a Spain immersed in a maelstrom of political events, in which he was immersed due to his military condition. It was precisely the success of these early works that prompted him to finally abandon his previous career to focus on art. During these years he would make his work known through individual exhibitions, such as the ones he held regularly from 1884 at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, always obtaining great success in sales and critics. Other notable works by his hand are "The Flight to Egypt" (1904) from the Monastery of Montserrat, one of his few religious canvases, and "Abnegation" and "Distant Thought". Stylistically, Cusachs was a man open to innovation, although his work was always filtered through the filter of evaluation, study and meditation. Thus, he adopted those aspects he considered of value, and discarded the rest. The bulk of his work is collected in the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, as well as other centers such as the Museum of Montjuïc de Montjuïc.

Size: 11 x 20 cm; 36 x 45.5 cm (frame). In the heat of the battle, the rearing horses stand out in this composition by Cusachs, a sketch or preparatory study in which, with his characteristic swift and resolute stroke, he superimposes wounded bodies on the ground with energetic equine foreshortenings and galloping soldiers. JOSEP CUSACHS (Montpellier, France, 1851 - Barcelona, 1908). "Troops in a Landscape".1892. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Retains a label on the back from the Petritxol gallery in Barcelona. It presents subtle craquelures. Measurements: 50 x 100 cm; 64 x 114 cm (frame). In Cusachs's work, the military theme was treated in a highly original way, by avoiding the moments of confrontation and choosing instead the stops along the way, the dead times or the antechambers of the wars. Instead of emphasising the epic of the battlefield, he sublimated the off-scenes of the fighting. In this horizontal format composition, his ability to communicate the sense of unity of the troops is commendable. The limits of the army, made up of countless horsemen, are lost on the horizon. The light swerves, reflected in the pond and the deep navy-blue coats, are treated with masterly technique. The battery of hooves also shines under a leaden sky. José Cusachs was accidentally born in France, as his parents were travelling there, but his art and his life were always linked to two places: Barcelona and Mataró. In 1865, after passing a competitive examination, he entered the Artillery Academy for a military career. The equine theme was worked with great sensitivity by Cusachs. Both in military scenes and in paintings of costumbrista or aristocratic themes like the one we are dealing with, the author found the excuse to represent horses galloping or at rest. Here, the white and light brown coat of two steeds shimmers smoothly in the silver light of an autumn day. An elegant lady ploughs her carriage, and behind her, several riders ride among the bare trunks of a sparse forest, which opens out into a misty background. José Cusachs was accidentally born in France, as his parents were travelling there, but his art and his life were always linked to two places: Barcelona and Mataró. In 1865, after passing a competitive examination, he entered the Artillery Academy for a military career. However, in 1882, after a brilliant career that led him to become a captain in the army for war merits, he requested retirement to devote himself to painting. Trained in Barcelona under the guidance of Simón Gómez, he completed his artistic studies with a stay in Paris at the studio of Édouard Détaille, one of the greatest experts in military themes, a genre that became Cusachs's favourite. Among military themes, this artist was particularly fond of cavalry, due to his passion for horses. In 1880 he settled in Barcelona and began an extensive production of military studies, which were reproduced in F. Barado's work entitled "La vida militar en España" ("Military Life in Spain"). Previously, before leaving the army, he had worked as a caricaturist and chronicler of a Spain immersed in a maelstrom of political events, in which he was immersed due to his military status. During these years he made his work known through solo exhibitions, such as those he held regularly from 1884 onwards at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, which were always a great success with both sales and critics. By 1890 he was already a regular exhibitor at the gallery, where he showed new works every week. The bond between Cusachs and the Sala Parés was so deep, in fact, that after the painter's death the gallery fell into a period of absolute decadence. Cusachs also took part in official competitions; in 1887 he obtained notable recognition at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid with three paintings, one of which was acquired by the regent Maria Cristina ("En el campo de maniobras" ("On the Manoeuvre Field"). In 1891 he took part in the Berlin Exhibition and won the Gold Medal for his work "Division Manoeuvres". Cusachs was also a celebrated military portraitist, and painted General Prim, King Alfonso XIII in military uniform and Mexican President Profirio Díaz, among others. Other notable works by his hand include "Flight into Egypt" (1904) from the monastery of Montserrat, one of his few religious canvases, and "Abnegation" and "Distant Thought". Stylistically, Cusachs was a man open to innovation, although his work was always filtered through the filter of appreciation, study and meditation. Thus, he adopted those aspects he considered to be of value and discarded the rest. The bulk of his work is in the Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid and the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña.

Cusachs was also a celebrated military portraitist, and painted General Prim, King Alfonso XIII in military uniform and Mexican President Profirio Díaz, among others. The bulk of his work is in the Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid and the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña.

          Est: €16,000 - €18,000

JOSEP CUSACHS (Montpellier, France, 1851 - Barcelona, 1908). "Military scene". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 46 x 56 cm; 63 x 75 cm (frame). The military theme undeniably occupied the summit of Cusachs' production, a theme from which he extracted an infinite number of situations, but all of them linked to the dead times of the battle scenes, to the displays of friendship and comradeship, to the antechambers of war, in short, to the waiting. This is beautifully captured in this painting, with two soldiers attentive to the silence of a forest. Autumn leaves carpet the mossy ground. The mastery of the drawing and the bold use of light are translated into soft chromatic shifts that build up the equine anatomy and exalt the nobility of their bearing. The satiny qualities of the fur, together with the military uniforms, are set in a landscape tarnished with melancholy. Trained in Barcelona under the guidance of Simón Gómez, he completed his artistic studies with a stay in Paris at the studio of Édouard Détaille, one of the greatest experts in military themes, a genre that was to become Cusachs's favourite. During these years he made his work known through individual exhibitions, such as those he held regularly from 1884 onwards at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, which were always a great success with both sales and critics. It has a label from the Sala Parés in Barcelona on the back. Restoration visible on the back. Measurements: 101 x 51 cm; 124 x 74 cm (frame). The military theme was undeniably at the top of Cusachs' production, a theme from which he drew an infinite number of situations, among which we should highlight those in which displays of friendship and comradeship replace the aggressiveness that would be characteristic of battle scenes for other artists. This is beautifully captured here: a wounded soldier rests his head on the shoulder of his companion, who tries to support his friend and at the same time keep the unruly horse calm. The equine foreshortening shows a great mastery of drawing and light management, and the soft chromatic shifts build up the horses' anatomies, exalting the nobility of their bearing. The satiny qualities of the horses' coats, together with the military uniforms, stand out against a landscape that veers in shades of grey and silver. The bare trees complete the melancholy, autumnal atmosphere of the scene. A body lies on the ground, camouflaged by the grass, and in the distance the army advances at a measured pace. All this enriches the composition with different narrative and spatial planes. José Cusachs was accidentally born in France, as his parents were travelling there, but his art and his life were always linked to two places: Barcelona and Mataró. José Cusachs was accidentally born in France, as his parents were travelling there, but his art and his life were always linked to two places: Barcelona and Mataró. JOSEP CUSACHS (Montpellier, France, 1851 - Barcelona, 1908). "The Republic". Oil on canvas. Signed and dedicated in the lower right corner. Size: 161 x 80 cm; 176 x 96 cm (frame). Cusachs represents in this painting an allegorical figure, personification of militancy and the uprising against social injustice. The Phrygian cap and torch could identify the Mariana of the First Republic, so called in memory of Juan de Mariana, a philosopher and religious figure who advocated against tyrannicide and defended the right of resistance to oppression. Although Cusachs' allegory does not adopt the canonical iconography (the scales of justice or the lion), it is likely to be inspired by Mariana. The influence of Delacroix is palpable, in particular the figure of "Liberty Leading the People". However, Delacroix's exalted epic is transformed into a silent, withdrawn, pensive attitude. Indeed, the meditating young woman seems to doubt the real achievements of her struggle. This is an unusual work in Cusachs's oeuvre, a singular piece in its subject matter and treatment.
