4 British Floral Engravings by Curtis - 1820s

        Est: $350 - $525

Samuel Curtis (British, 1779-1860). Four hand colored copper engravings, ca. 1820s. A lovely ensemble of four copper engravings of different floral species, each one embellished with beautiful hand coloring to bring out the scarlet and blushing pink hues of the blooms as well as the vibrant green leaves with delineated veining. Three of the plates depict the development of the plants from seed to blossoming stage. Each plate was created for Curtis' "The Botanical Magazine" and is set in an attractive dark green matte. Size of plate marks: 7.875" L x 4.75" W (20 cm x 12.1 cm) Size of sheets: 9.3" L x 5.75" W (23.6 cm x 14.6 cm) Size of mattes: 14.5" L x 11.25" W (36.8 cm x 28.6 cm) In the 1820s, Samuel Curtis assumed the role of editor of "The Botanical Magazine" which was founded by his cousin and father-in-law William Curtis thirty years prior. William Curtis was a London apothecary who could not ignore his passion for natural history. Curtis tended to his large garden and began the publication of "The Botanical Magazine" in February of 1787. This multi-volume work became one of the most influential botanical publications, and it continues to be published today. In fact, "The Botanical Magazine" holds the record for being the longest running scientific periodical of all time. CURTIS, Samuel (1779-1860). Carnations (Proof). Aquatint with partial hand-color and partial print color. From "The Beauties of Flora". London, 1806-1820. 18 3/4 x 15 inches sheet, 31 x 26 inches framed It is this group of plants that Samuel Curtis turned his attentions to in his The Beauties of Flora. This exceptionally rare book with only ten plates is perhaps one of the more little known of English flower books but is amongst the most splendid. The illustrations were mostly painting by the talented Clara Maria Pope who managed to convey a sense of drama in her skillfully arranged compositions. Samuel Curtis was a well-respected nurseryman and head of the famous Walworth Nursery in south London. He made several publishing ventures but The Beauties of Flora is undoubtedly his finest work with illustrations that rival those of Dr. Robert Thornton’s Temple of Flora and George Brookshaw’s Pomona Britannica.

Broadsheets (702 x 580mm). Mounted on cloth guards throughout. Engraved title and engraved dedication to Georgiana, Duchess of Newcastle, by J. Girtin. 4 letterpress text leaves on the Camellia Japonica printed in double columns. 5 very finely grained hand-coloured aquatint plates by Weddell after Clara Maria Pope, finished with gum arabic. (Expert restoration to margins of each leaf, old dampstaining to upper outer corner of final plate, just affecting image area.) 20th-century green morocco, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt along the length of the spine in the second to fourth compartments (light soiling and discolouration to spine). Provenance : Quentin Keynes (1921-2003). EXCEPTIONALLY RARE: 'ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND PROBABLY THE FINEST OF ALL THE GREAT CAMELLIA BOOKS' ( Great Flower Books ). Clara Maria Pope (c.1767-1838) -- one of the greatest botanical artists of her day -- came from an artistic background; her father was the amateur artist Jared Leigh (1724-1769), her first husband the artist Francis Wheatley (1747-1801), and her second husband the Irish actor and artist Alexander Pope (1763-1835). When her first husband's health began to fail, Clara supported her family by becoming a drawing teacher -- counting amongst her pupils Princess Sophia of Gloucester -- and working as an artist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1796. Her early works were miniatures and rustic scenes, but her real reputation rests on her flower painting and botanical studies, work with which she almost solely occupied herself from 1816 until her death on Christmas Eve 1838. The author, Samuel Curtis, FLS, was a cousin of William Curtis (1746-1799), the celebrated English botanist and entomologist, and founder and editor of the Botanical Magazine (see the following lot). Samuel married Sarah Caustin (1779-1827), the daughter of his cousin William, in October 1801, and became the proprietor of the Botanical Magazine as a result, although he did not gain full control of publication until 1827. Pope also colloborated with Curtis on his only other published work The Beauties of Flora (1806-1820). Together, Curtis and Pope produced a truly remarkable work, as celebrated for the beauty of its engraved plates as it is for its rarity. It was issued with uncoloured plates at £3. 3s and with coloured plates at £6. 16s. 6d., but publication appears to have ceased prematurely, possibly due to the expense incurred by Curtis. THE WORK IS RARE AT AUCTION: ABPC only records the Fattorini copy (lacking title and text, the plates mounted) and one other copy at auction since 1975. Equally, Dunthorne's statement of the Monograph and The Beauties of Flora that, 'both of these grand and important works ... are so rare that they are known only to a fortunate few' (p. 40) is confirmed by Great Flower Books : ' Monograph on the Genus Camellia [is ...] as beautiful and rare as its companion' (p. 43). All eleven leaves are on paper watermarked J. Whatman and dated 1818-1820. The text consists of notes on the class and order of the Japan Rose (p. 1), descriptions of the specimens illustrated (pp. 2-7), 'propagation and culture' (pp. 6-7), and a list of 'all Camellias at present known' (p. 8), and is enlivened with Curtis's colourful remarks on a species which interested him deeply: 'Just as the dawn is the harbinger of morning, and the sun does not at once reach his meridian glory, so the Camellias advance upon us by degrees in beauty' (p. 3). Eleven varieties of Camellia Japonica or Japan Rose are depicted on the unnumbered plates: [plate 1] Single White; Single Red Camellia; Sasanqua Camellia [plate 2] Double White Camellia; Double Striped Camellia [plate 3] Pompone or Kew Blush Camellia; Double Red Camellia [plate 4] Anemome flower'd or Waratah Camellia; Rose coloured or Middlemists Camellia [plate 5] Buff or Humes Blush Camellia; Myrtle leaved Camellia BM(NH) I, p.406; Dunthorne 85; Great Flower Books p.88; Lowndes p. 572; Nissen BBI 437; Stafleu and Cowan 1283; cf. Printmaking in the Service of Botany (Pittsburgh: 1986), 34 (plate 4 only).

CURTIS, William (1746-1799) - Samuel CURTIS (1779-1860) and Sir William Jackson HOOKER (1785-1865), editors. Curtis's Botanical Magazine; or Flower Garden Displayed. London: Edward Couchman for Samuel Curtis, Sherwood & Co. and others, 1827. New series, vol.I only (vol.54 of the whole work), 4° (307 x 240mm). Uncut. Engraved portrait of William Curtis, 85 hand-coloured engraved plates by Swan and ?others after Hooker, the Rev. L. Guilding, C.M. Curtis and others. (Light spotting or browning to title and first and last few leaves.) Original green cloth, paper label to spine, t.e.g. (label torn with some loss, extremities scuffed and lightly rubbed). Provenance: G.F. Tothall (inscription at front). A VERY RARE large paper issue from one of the oldest scientific periodicals. William Curtis had witnessed from personal experience that his clients refused to buy folio pictures of unassuming plants (vide, his Flora Londinensis) but he felt that they would subscribe to an octavo work which pictured the showy plants that filled their gardens, and from this premise was born the Botanical Magazine. The work was immediately successful, and the early volumes were quickly reissued. William Curtis edited the work until his death in 1799 (vols. 1-13), John Sims then took over 1801 until 1826. The present volume marks the start of the great third period when the work was published under the editorship of Sir William Hooker. This lasted from 1827 to 1864, when Sir William's son, Sir Joseph Hooker took over. The plates are undoubtedly seen at their best in the present large paper format, particularly the ten larger plates that were issued folded in the regular issue. It would appear that Hooker tried out the large paper copy for the first few issues of the third series, presumably for presentation. They are very rare and the bibliographies do not discuss this format. Cf. Blunt (1994), pp.211-217; cf. Great Flower Books (1990), pp. 156-7; cf. Nissen BBI 2350; cf. Stafleu & Cowan 1290. Broadsheets (702 x 580mm; image area of plates: 572 x 465mm). Mounted on cloth guards throughout. Engraved title by J. EXCEPTIONALLY RARE, THE FIRST AND FINEST MONOGRAPH ON THE SUBJECT AND WITHOUT DOUBT THE MOST DESIRABLE ITEM FOR ANY COLLECTOR OF CAMELLIA PLATES. Clara Maria Pope (d. 1838) is rightly considered one of the greatest botanical artists of her day. She had an artistic background - her father was the amateur artist Jared Leigh (1724-1769), her first husband was the artist Francis Wheatley (1747-1801), and her second husband was the Irish actor and artist Alexander Pope (1763-1835). She was a model for her first husband and from 1796 exhibited her own work at the Royal Academy. Her early works were miniatures and rustic scenes, but her real reputation rests on her flower painting and botanical studies, work with which she almost solely occupied herself from 1816 until her death on Christmas Eve 1838. Pope also colloborated with Curtis on his only other published work The Beauties of Flora (1806-1820): 'the only large plates, apart from Thornton's Temple of Flora depicting life sized flowers dramatically set in front of a landscape background' (Dunthorne). Samuel Curtis was a cousin of William Curtis (1746-1799), the celebrated English botanist and entomologist, and editor and owner of the Botanical Magazine from 1787 until his death. Samuel married Sarah Caustin (1779-1827), the daughter of his cousin William, in October 1801. He became the proprietor of the Botanical Magazine as a result of his marriage although he did not gain full control of publication until 1827. All eleven leaves are on paper dated 1818-20 J. 3). The work illustrates 10 varieties of Camillia Japonica or Japan Rose. The unnumbered plates are titled on the image area, as follows: [plate 1] Single White; Single Red Camellia; Sasanqua Camellia [plate 2] Double White Camellia; Double Striped Camellia [plate 3] Pompone or Kew Blush Camellia; Double Red Camellia [plate 4] Anemome flower'd or Waratah Camellia; Rose coloured or Middlemists Camellia [plate 5] Buff or Humes Blush Camellia; Myrtle leaved Camellia BM(NH) I,p.406; Dunthorne 85; Great Flower Books (1990) p.88; Nissen BBI 437; Stafleu & Cowan 1283.
