      CALVIN CURTIS (American, 1822-1893) PAIR OF PORTRAITS OF EZRA MORGAN AND HANNAH NASH MORGAN.

      Two oil on canvas bust length portraits of Ezra and Hannah Morgan. Housed in matching period carved and molded giltwood frames. Both are signed and dated on verso "C. Curtis/1877", with frames inscribed "J. Marshall & Co., Bridgeport Conn." NOTE: Ezra Morgan was a prominent person who descended from one of the oldest families in Connecticut. He died in 1871, however his wife Hannah lived until 1883. Their son, the Honorable Daniel Nash Morgan, was a prominent businessman and statesman from both Newtown and Bridgeport, Connecticut. In addition to a distinguished career in public service, he served as treasurer of the United States. In 1877, Daniel had been successful in various business ventures and likely commissioned the portraits of his parents after his father's death. Also, Calvin Curtis is the artist who painted the official portrait of President Garfield. SIZE: 17" x 14". Overall 24" x 21".       Parents of Daniel Nash Morgan, Treasurer of US, 1890's. Identically housed in fancy rectangular gesso decorated frames with oval windows and fruit decoration at corners. The frames have writing "J. Marshall & Co., Bridgeport, Conn". The back of the canvases are signed by the artist "C. Curtis 1877" and have family histories attached to back. The Morgan's were from Newtown, CT. Portraits show a middle aged man and woman against a greenish/gray background. Accompanying lot is the History of the Morgan Family book which includes entries of the sitters.
