          JOHN STEUART CURRY End Run. Red chalk on cream wove paper mounted on illustration board, 1937. 487x705 mm; 19 1/4x28 inches. Signed, titled and dated in pencil, lower right recto. With the artist's reproduction rights ink stamp on the illustration board verso. Provenance: Private collection, Chicago. Curry (1897-1946) likely made this drawing of the University of Wisconsin Badgers football team. He served as an artist-in-residence at the university, Madison, Wisconsin, between 1936 and 1946. Curry also made two football lithographs, Football Game or Off Tackle and End Run, Cole 29 and 30, in 1938, the latter lithograph with a similar composition though in reverse of the current drawing.

Published by Associated American Artists, New York. A very good impression. This lithograph is based on a mural series that Curry created for the Kansas State Capitol, Topeka, 1937. These murals were divided into three themes: the settlement of Kansas (depicting the conquistadors and plainsmen, see lot 230); the homesteaders (which included John Brown); and pastoral prosperity or representations of modern Kansas (the current lot).
