Ken Currie Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor

Ken Currie (born 1960 in North Shields, Northumberland, England) is a Scottish artist and a graduate of Glasgow School of Art (1978–1983). Ken grew up in industrial Glasgow. This has had a significant influence on his early works. In the 1980s Currie produced a series of works that romanticised Red Clydeside depicting heroic Dockworkers, Shop-stewards and urban areas along the River Clyde. These works were also in response to then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's policies that he believed were the greatest threat to culture of labour.

KEN CURRIE (SCOTTISH 1960-) THE EMBATTLED CITY - 1984 Signed and inscribed with title and dated 1984 verso, conte and charcoal on paper 114cm x 93cm (44.75in x 36.5in) Flowers East, London, 1989; Private Collection; Sotheby's, May 2008, lot 235; where purchased by the present owner The current work was executed on hand-made paper created by Ken Currie and his friend Keith McIntyre who shared a studio on East Campbell Street in Glasgow, opposite the famous Barrowland Ballroom. McIntyre utilised pulped hospital bed sheets as the base material for this paper which lends this gritty image an extra dimension.Ken Currie’s early work is celebrated as a remarkable, modern interpretation of 19th century history painting fused with the revolutionary dynamism of pivotal twentieth century artistic movements. Currie studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1970s and early '80s. Living in a city in the grip of immense poverty and decay, ruptured by sectarian violence and in an era which was witnessing the rise of a ‘New Right’, he turned to the figurative tradition to address the sense of existential crisis and undercurrent of brutality he perceived around him.Currie’s urge to record this zeitgeist produced its greatest results when he simultaneously imbued his art with his passion for community engagement. As the artist comments: ‘It was only through contact with my tutor, Alexander Moffat, that my work did not descend into the most mindless kind of nihilism… his belief in the centrality of the European figurative tradition provided essential support, putting me, along with other students* in touch with the vital moments of twentieth century painting… and that whole dynamic, revolutionary European culture that flourished between the wars.'1984, the year the two artworks offered here for sale were produced, was also the year he received a significant grant to make a film called ‘Glasgow 1984’ with a group of unemployed youth from the Cranhill Arts Project, using professional equipment. Currie was intensely engaged with filmmaking at this point, a medium which afforded him the perfect vehicle with which to produce community-engaged art. He had temporarily almost wholly abandoned painting at this point, finding filmmaking both hugely powerful but also an all-consuming endurance test. After the film was finally completed, he felt drawn to return to the looser medium of charcoal, “…retracing my steps stylistically to a time perhaps in my third year at art school”.In works such as ‘The Cripples’ (1984) and ‘The Embattled City’, the parallels with Weimar-era artists such as Backmann, Grosz, Dix and Kollwitz are clear to see. Visions of destruction, of war and annihilation, of malformity and insanity are shown unflinchingly. They are complex, theatrical compositions – a carefully choreographed chaos in which Currie brings his newly honed directorial eye to illustrate his fascination with recording the reverberations of Europe’s turbulent political history, past and present.

KEN CURRIE (SCOTTISH 1960-) MAN WITH TATTOOS - 1987 Signed lower right, signed and inscribed with title and dated 1987 verso, conte, pencil and pastel on paper 84cm x 58cm (33in x 23in) Exhibited: ‘The Vigorous Imagination’, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, 1987; ‘The Vigorous Imagination Then & Now’, The Fine Art Society, 2017 Born in 1960, Ken Currie graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1983. His work is typically dark and confrontational. Currie is highly aware of and influenced by the tradition of Western art, drawing inspiration from a variety of artists including Goya and Velazquez. Similarly to Francis Bacon, he is fascinated by the human face as a mechanism of expressing trauma, pain, and powerful psychological expression. His early work is heavily inspired by his childhood in Glasgow’s declining industrial landscape; observational of the different character architypes that were beginning to vanish, and politically critical of the Thatcherite policies which saw the city decay. This early imagery is unflinching and, like Howson, skirts the grotesque, yet it is also multilayered, even romanticised.

The inner core of meaning comes out of the human beings themselves, rather than being imposed on them, The figures are both more individualised and more anonymous. They are no longer specifically Scottish or Glaswegian, but tortured, suffering, doubting, brutal or brutalised, ugly, human creatures... In these disturbing works, we are made to confront the most painful and terrible experiences of our times.' (Lotz, ibid, 1991)

§ ◆ KEN CURRIE (SCOTTISH B.1960) A TREE OF LIBERTY - 1988 Signed, dated and inscribed verso, oil on canvas (212cm x 381cm (83.5in x 150in), unframed) Footnote: Note: The artist has noted verso that this work was commenced on 14/6/88 and completed 8/7/88. Ken Currie views his art as a political tool, a way of expressing his understanding of the world around him and suggesting new ways for society to evolve and adapt. His early paintings promote his ultimate goal of an egalitarian and just society and try to offer easily read and understood visual encapsulations of this vision. Currie entered the Glasgow School of Art in 1978, at that time the focus was very much on colour and sensuality as the focus on art yet as he developed in his talent, Currie felt that this approach didn’t suit his ultimate goals. So, with the support of teacher Sandy Moffat, he switched his focus, putting the content of the work, its meaning and ideas, first. He looked to the realist tradition established between the wars for inspiration, engaging with artist such as Otto Dix, George Grosz, Fernand Leger and Diego Riveria. In the early 1980s the focus of his work crystallised after a period working on community films about Glasgow and the deterioration of its shipbuilding industry. Currie had found his subject in the figures and landscapes of Glasgow heavy industry, particularly the shipyards and the shipbuilders who inhabited them. ‘The Tree of Liberty’ was painted in a period where utopian views had fallen out of favour, so Currie was going against the grain in this respect. Yet, this painting also dates from a time when large-scale figurative work was having a revival in contemporary Scottish art and so stylistically it would have felt very current. The late 1980s was a significant moment in Currie’s career, he was being widely recognised as a significant figure in the New Glasgow Boys movement and in general there was a strong interest in, and lots of attention being paid to, contemporary Scottish art. This was all encapsulated in his involvement in the landmark exhibition ‘The Vigorous Imagination,’ presented as part of the Edinburgh Festival in 1987 and celebrating the most interesting artists to have emerged in Scotland in the 1980s. ‘The Tree of Liberty’ was painted the following summer. The final work is monumental and undoubtedly of museum-quality, a landmark work from Currie in a significant moment of his career. It encapsulates his vision of the status quo being swept away to make room for a new approach based on freedom, justice and education. The fresh new way of life grows in the centre of the composition, studded with the jewels of its existence and the education that is its means. Everything is shifting around the central key figures, the workers and the shipbuilders, carrying the next generation on their backs as they labour for a better future. There are tools and flags, protests and emotions, some elements of violence and destruction required to encourage this fresh approach. Currie’s vision is vivid and bold, he paints with conviction and passion, with all the skills of his figuration and colour utilised to unleash this striking and hopeful new vision upon us.
