Peter Curling (b.1955) Out Exercising Oil on canvas, 75 x 110.5cm (29½ x 43½) Signed Born in Waterford, Peter Curling’s interest in horses and the tradition of their depiction began in his early childhood when his mother was involved in the sale of sporting art. His talent for equine depictions was soon recognised and at the age of fourteen, then living in England, he had his first sell out show at Lambourn. Curling studied at Stonyhurst, won a scholarship to Milfield, and then moved to Florence to study with the famous Signorina Simi from 1971 to 1974. This training allowed him to hone his talent for depicting horses when he returned to Ireland in 1975, capturing movement while remaining true to anatomical detail. Horses have been at the centre of his world not only in terms of his painting. His interest has extended at various times into ownership, hunting, training and stewarding, and he now runs his own stud with his wife Louise in Co. Tipperary. Demand for his work is increasingly high, and Curling is widely regarded as the leading Irish equestrian painter, due to his unique treatment of his subjects.

Peter Curling (b.1955) The Paddock at Kilfeacle, The Scarteen Point to Point

        Est: €20,000 - €30,000

Peter Curling (b.1955) The Paddock at Kilfeacle, The Scarteen Point to Point oil on canvas signed lower left h:76.40  w:102 cm. Provenance: Private Collection The point to point race, held at Kilfeacle, in Co. Tipperary, forms the subject of several paintings by Curling. In this accomplished canvas, under a grey-blue sky, tinged with pink, a chestnut mare is led by its trainer towards the starting line of the race. Dressed in white and pink silks, the mounted jockey holds the reins tightly, as the horse begins to shy. Two other horses, also led by trainers, follow in the distance. In the left foreground, a man, possibly the owner, paces anxiously alongside the lead horse, while in the background, crowds of race-goers gather at the fence, with bookies' boards held aloft. Although classed as amateur events, point to point races are an important element in the equestrian calendar, and often provide a testing ground where young horses first show their qualities on the track. There are no grandstands, and crowds mill about freely, in a colourful and informal atmosphere beautifully evoked by Curling. A skilled painter, he applies paint in short brushstrokes, avoiding too polished a finish. The grass and mud of the field are rendered with spirited, almost Impressionist brushstrokes, while the faces of the racegoers are suggested with quick dabs of paint. Born in Waterford in 1955, Peter Curling spent his first years in Co. Clare, before moving to England with his family in 1963, where he won an art scholarship to Millfield School near Glastonbury. At Millfield, Aylmer Troyon, founder of the Troyon Gallery, saw and admired Curling's work. Living for a time near Newmarket, Curling was given the opportunity of sketching and painting horses, and rode out with the trainer Michael Stoute, whose collaboration with Irish jockey Kieran Fallon led to memorable wins. Curling also spent a period in Spain with the equestrian artist John Skeaping RA. Becoming a professional artist in his early 'teens, Curling exhibited at Lambourn when just fourteen years old, and two years later he showed at Combridges in Dublin, during Horse Show Week. In 1971, Troyon encouraged Curling to travel to Florence, to study at the atelier of "La Signorina" Nerina Simi (1890-1987). Simi's father had been a pupil of Baron Gérôme in Paris and the emphasis in her atelier was on life drawing and drawing from observation. After studying with Simi from 1972 to 1974, Curling returned to London where he exhibited at the Troyon Gallery, also showing his work at Kentucky and Saratoga in the United States. More recently he has exhibited at the Sladmore Gallery in London. In 1975 Curling settled in Co. Tipperary, where he painted and founded his own stud farm, rode out for trainer Eddie O'Grady, and also rode his own horse "Caddy" to victory in 1985 at Limerick Junction. His large-scale canvases of horses and riders, both at rest and at full gallop, are technically accomplished and demonstrate a deep knowledge of equestrian art and the anatomy of horses. Also a writer, Curling recently completed his first novel, Drawing the Line, a romance set in Tipperary and Venice. He lives and works in Tipperary. Peter Murray, March 2022
