Cripple Creek, Colorado, EE.UU. 1904 - Hackensack, Nueva Jersey, 1975) Benjamin Frazier Cunningham se mudó con su familia a Reno, Nevada en 1907. En 1922 asistió brevemente a la University of Nevada, sin embargo, aunque Nevada alimentó su vocabulario visual, no era el ambiente idóneo para su desarrollo artístico. En 1925 se mudó a San Francisco, donde estudió en el Mark Hopkins Art Institute. La década de 1930 fue muy significativa en su carrera, participando en exposiciones colectivas que lo llevaron a ser reconocido entre sus colegas. En 1934 inició su labor en formato mural en la Coit Tower de San Francisco, donde también estaba trabajando Diego Rivera. En su obra al fresco, Cunningham trazó superficies de planos pictóricos con patrones repetitivos, los cuales eran el resultado de su pasado como tejedor y diseñador de tapices. Fue en 1939 cuando conoció a Hilaire Hiler, quien es reconocido por sus trabajos en colorimetría, con la cual buscaba crear un puente entre ciencia y arte a través de secuencias que remitieran a las que se encuentran en la naturaleza. Hiler se convertiría en una influencia muy fuerte en sus trabajos posteriores y a su vez lo introduciría a la teoría del color de Wilhelm Ostwald que lo llevaría a analizar la relación entre los pigmentos y la percepción del color en base a las mezclas de colores elementales con blanco y negro. De este modo la obra de Cunninhgam empezó a centrarse en la exploración de complejas investigaciones de color para crear ilusiones de superficies planas o volúmenes, así como interacciones entre luz y sombra, logrando que los espectadores vieran colores o espacios imaginarios. En 1944 se mudó a Nueva York, al darse cuenta de que no habían más colegas que compartieran su teoría, se dedicó a ser catedrático y enseñar sus investigaciones a nuevas generaciones. En la década de 1960 y ante el boom del Op Art, fue invitado a numerosas exposiciones, en las que coincidió con el húngaro Victor Vasarely y descubrió la coincidencia de que hubieran desarrollado un interés por problemas pictóricos similares en la misma época. En una exposición realizada en el Museum of Modern Art de Nueva York se dio cuenta que su lenguaje estaba emparentado con la corriente que estaba en voga a nivel mundial. La obra de Ben Cunningham forma parte de la colección permanente de importantes instituciones como el Museum of Modern Art (MoMa), el Whitney Museum, el Brooklyn Museum y el Smithsonian Art Museum.
