Terence Tenison Cuneo Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1907 - d. 1996

Born in London in 1907, artist Terence Cuneo was the son of two illustrators who gave him his first lessons in art. He later studied at the Chelsea School of Art and the Slade School before becoming an illustrator himself. Cuneo served as an official war artist during World War II, which sparked his interest in painting rather than drawing. Terence Cuneo's original paintings often featured military and engineering subjects, especially trains and railways, although he was also known for fantasy-driven paintings, many of which featured mice.

As an artist, Terence Cuneo loved to match his fascination with engineering with his art, painting locomotives as well as images of busy train stations and factory floors. He also painted human and animal portraits. Terence Cuneo's prints were transformed into jigsaw puzzles, posters, and postage stamps. Collectors can browse Invaluable to find vintage genre paintings for sale online and at auction.

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

TERENCE CUNEO (1907-1996) AN ENGINE IS WHEELED / DERBY LOCOMOTIVE WORKS. Circa 1955. 39¾x49½ inches, 101x125¾ cm. Waterlow & Sons Limited, London. Condition A-: expert overpainting in margins and around text; minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. From as early as the 1840s, Derby was the site of maintenance workshops for the newly formed Midland Railway, and remained as such even when the company merged into the London Midland and Scotland Railway in 1923. When the railway companies were nationalized in 1948, the Derby Works became part of the British Railway system. Cuneo was a masterful painter of railroad images and locomotives, and many of his paintings were turned into posters for the British Railway. Given Cuneo's love of detail, we can determine that the engine being wheeled here is the 2-6-4T, the Fairburn Tank. The numbers (from the Whyte Classification) pertain to the wheel arrangement; two small leading wheels, six coupled driving wheels and four trailing wheels. The "T" stands for Tank Engine, meaning that it carries its own fuel and water, rather than having them behind in a tender. Almost 400 of these locomotives were constructed between 1945 and 1951. Le Train p. 80-81.

This magnificent work captures the viewer's attention by expressing the drama and emotion of a crowded jump in our country's most famous horse race. 'Crammer', ridden by John Durkan in yellow and black silks, can be seen falling at the fence named 'The Chair' at Aintree. The painting was entered into a competition and exhibition of works depicting the 1991 Grand National. Organised by the publication 'Horse & Hound', Cuneo, unfortunately, was not the winning entry, perhaps because the realistic depiction of a horse falling was not considered appealing to the judges. Condition Report: Framed: 89 x 114cm There is spotting to the reverse of the canvas however the front of the painting does not seem to be affected. Appears to be in otherwise good condition. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

The de Havilland 'Mosquito', famously known as the 'wooden wonder', was a versatile British aircraft used during the Second World War. Its construction - which relied heavily on wood due to the scarcity of metals during the war - required the expertise of skilled craftsmen to piece together the aircraft's intricately shaped wooden components. The Parker Knoll factory in High Wycombe, renowned for its high-quality furniture manufacturing, was one such place where these skilled craftsmen could be found. The workers at Parker Knoll, accustomed to crafting fine furniture, possessed the precise woodworking skills needed to assemble the Mosquito's complex wooden structure, and it was this collaboration that was essential to the success of the aircraft's production. The present lot was one of many commissioned by de Havilland in which Cuneo showed the process of wartime manufacture. Through such works, Cuneo vividly illustrated the behind-the-scenes labours that contributed to the war effort, immortalising the role of craftsmen in the creation of this remarkable aircraft. Condition Report: Framed: 69.5 x 89.5cm Small losses to the centre of the left edge, please refer to illustration. Some further scattered minor losses predominantly to the lower half. Overall the paint appears stable and the painting appears to be in otherwise good condition. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

Provenance: Peter L Steer; Dr A F Marchington. The David and Pam McCleave Collection of Modern British Art. Condition Report: Framed: 93 x 118.5cm No major condition issues and presents well overall. Faint stretcher marks are starting to emerge to the top edge. There is a little very slight rubbing from framing to the extreme right edge. The paint in the sky has been more thinly applied than that of the train, however this appears to be the artist's intention rather than a later issue with condition. Under raking light a couple of very slight protrusions are visible to the sky in the upper left and right quarters. Examined under UV light no obvious restoration is apparent.

Condition B / B-: extensive replaced losses, overpainting and repaired tears in margin and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; overpainting around text. Born into a family of artists, Cuneo was a painter and illustrator who excelled at locomotive images and military themes. He served as the official artist for Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953. Many of his paintings were turned into posters for the British Railway, each of which is distinguished by the great attention he paid to the technical details. Here, "we are standing in a Greenwood signal box near new Barnet as A4 Wild Swan thunders towards us on a main line express" (Furness Vol. 4, p. 139). Furness Vol. 4, p. 139.

Condition A- / B+: minor repaired tears at edges; minor creases and abrasions in margins and image; slight time-staining at edges. The streamlined locomotive pictured chugging over Scotland's Forth Bridge is a Class A4 engine designed for the London and North Eastern Railway by Nigel Gresley, in 1935. Specifically, it is number 60031, The Golden Plover, which was in service from 1937 to 1965. 35 were built in all, designed to pull the "Silver Jubilee" train. The series was among the fastest and most recognizable trains in Britain. Cuneo artfully captures the complexity of the bridge construction as well as the sleek lines of the engine. Furness Vol. 1, p. 51 (var).
