Cundall (Joseph, 1818-1895). Portraits of the Members and Associates of the Society of Painters... Cundall (Joseph, 1818-1895). Portraits of the Members and Associates of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, London: Photographed by Cundall, Downes & Company, [1864], printed title and printed list of member and associate exhibitors for 1864 sheets and 36 individually mounted albumen print portraits of artists, images 9.5 x 7.5 cm and very similar, some with pencil identification to mount versos, all loosely contained as issued with 3 larger mounted albumen print portraits in a contemporary morocco folder, gilt-titled on upper cover, rubbed and some wear, 4to QTY: (1) NOTE: A scarce publication. The British Museum (no. 1923,0612.34-69) has an unbound set and notes that the printed list of members and associate exhibitors at the beginning of the album is much longer than the portraits in the BM set, so the relationship between the two is not clear. The portraits identified from the pencil inscriptions to versos in this set include Valentine Bartholomew, George Price Boyce, Charles Branwhite, John Burgess, William Callow, William Collingwood, David Cox Junior, Henry Gastineau, Myles Birket Foster, John Gilbert, Edward Angelo Goodall, James Duffield Harding, Alfred William Hunt, William Holman Hunt, Joseph John Jenkins, Paul Jacob Naftel, Joseph Nash, Samuel Palmer, etc., and would appear to match the set in the British Museum.

Gauge Controversy.- Cundall (Joseph) Pamphlets in support of National Uniformity of Gauge..., Cundall, 1846 & another (2)

        Est: £350 - £450

Gauge Controversy.- Cundall (Joseph, editor) Pamphlets in support of National Uniformity of Gauge and the Report of Her Majesty's Gauge Commissioners collected, bound and sold by Joseph Cundall, a bound volume of 13 pamphlets by William Harding and others, title in red & black, some maps, contemporary russia, spine worn and defective, Cundall, [1846] § Sidney (Samuel) Gauge Evidence. The History and Prospects of the Railway System, first edition, folding colour map, original pictorial cloth, gilt, with elaborate border in blind, a little rubbed, spine slightly faded, 1846, 8vo (2) ⁂ The Gauge wars lasted throughout the years following the 1846 Railways Act which recommended the adoption of the narrow gauge. The GWR marshalled a powerful lobby defending Brunel's broad gauge. The last train to leave Paddington on the original track left in 1892. The author of the second item, Samuel Sidney, was a leading opponent of the broad gauge. The folding map shows the ten points where the GWR broad gauge met the standard narrower gauge.
