              Charles Cumberworth (French 1811-1842), a pair of patinated bronze peasant dancers She playing a tambourine, he hopping and holding a ribbon, both on a circular black marble base, the female signed to the base Cumberworth Scpt, 30cm high, the male unsigned, 32cm high. (2) Rupert Gunnis suggested in The Dictionary of British Sculptors that Cumberworth was born in America although it seems more likely he was born in Verdun, France which is more commonly cited. In 1829 Cumberworth entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris and studied under Pradier and exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1833-1848. Provenance: Private Collection, England

Light surface scuffs and scratches visible to the rounded base. Surface dust visible to the naked eye, most notably to the top of the woman's head and arms.
