Wales.- Cumberland (George) An Attempt to Describe Hafod..., first edition, [one of 500 copies], half-title, errata/advertisement leaf, folding engraved plan by ?William Blake, contemporary manuscript notes concerning a proposed second edition to front free endpaper, an excellent copy in contemporary tree calf, gilt, slightly rubbed, rebacked with gilt spine preserving old roan label, 1796 § Heath (Charles) Monmouthshire. Historical and Descriptive Accounts of the Ancient and Present State of Ragland Castle..., first edition, spotting to last few leaves, contemporary half calf, spine gilt, split to head of upper joint, Monmouth, [1797], both rubbed; and c.25 others on Wales and Welsh houses, 8vo & 4to (c.30) ⁂ The Hafod estate in Ceredigion was inherited and developed by Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), a politician, farmer, writer and social benefactor. He built a new mansion in the Gothic style, filling it with rare books & manuscripts and several furnishings from William Beckford's Fonthill Splendens, and between 1790 and 1810 planted 3 million trees creating one of the finest examples of an 18th century picturesque landscape. George Cumberland, a poet and amateur artist, was a friend of both Johnes and William Blake and it has long been believed that Blake engraved the plan for this scarce work.
