Pascal Cucaro Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1915 - d. 2004

Artist Pascal Cucaro was born in Ohio in 1915, and he passed his childhood summers working in the circus. His time spent among the performers at the circus led to a life-long interest in clowns and everyday circus life. Oil painter Pascal Cucaro produced his larger artworks in his studio, but he created sketches and watercolors during his travels in the Army during WWII. He also studied art on his own in Europe before returning to the States. Artist Pascal Cucaro was multitalented and experimented with different mediums, including lithography and enamel on copper. Pascal Cucaro's portraits for sale include clowns that he painted on guitars and violins. After serving in the European Theatre during World War II, he attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, then returned to Europe to spend time in France, Spain, and Italy to study art on his own. He became part of the art scene during the “Beat” years in San Francisco’s North Beach section, exhibiting his work at the Black Cat Cafe, The Iron Pot, and The Hungry I, which continues to show his work to this day. A one-man art show held at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown in 1958 was followed by exhibitions in California, Hawaii, and Japan.  He was nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1965. He died of pulmonary failure in San Rafael, California in 2004. His circus scenes, street scenes, and what he dubbed “people-people” paintings are characterized by a bold gestural quality, complimented by a thick application of paint.

        Pascal Cucaro American, (1915 - 2004) abstract scene oil on board signed upper right. Cory Gallery, San Francisco stamp verso. Loss to frame. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Pascal Cucaro was known for his paintings of clowns; he also did abstract subject. Cucaro maintained a studio in North Beach, and lived in Sausalito, California. He studied at the Butler Art Institute, in Paris with Ferdinand Leger, and at the School of Fine Art in San Francisco. Source: Peter Hastings Falk, Editor, Who Was Who in American Art Biography from Ripley Auctions Pascal (Pat) Cucaro was born in Youngstown, Ohio on November 6, 1915, to Italian immigrant parents. He worked in the circus during his childhood summers. These experiences giving him a lifelong interest in clowns, and circus life. The painting of Pascal Cucaro is characterized by a bold gestural quality, complimented by a thick application of paint. In some cases, the artwork has paint so thick it seems to have been applied straight from the tube. After serving in World War II, he attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, then returned to Europe to spend time in France, Spain, and Italy in order to study art on his own. Pascal Cucaro became part of the art scene during the lively 'Beat' years in San Francisco's North Beach section. He exhibited his work at the Black Cat Cafe, The Iron Pot, The Lion Book Shop, The City Lights Book Shop, Vesuvio's, and The Hungry I. A one-man art show held at the Butler Institute of American Art at his hometown in 1958 was followed by other exhibitions in California, as well as Hawaii and Japan. He was nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1965.
