JOSÉ MARÍA CRUZ NOVILLO (Cuenca, 1936). "Tetralogical Diaphragm T", 2018. Handmade polyester thread on silk. This piece belongs to the Kimono Joya collection. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Size: 38 x 39 cm; 53 x 53 cm (frame). This work belongs to the exhibition project entitled "Treasures on silk. Ensoñaciones orientales", created by Fumiko Negishi and Carlos Muñiz. The project not only comprised an exhibition of 30 Haoris intervened by various artists from the international contemporary art scene, but was accompanied by a set of 10 Tanka poems by Junko Okawara, objects of Wabi Sabi philosophy and action painting. In the creation of this collection, the inspiration of the exhibition entitled "Kimono Joya, Wabi Sabi the beauty of imperfection" has been fundamental. This exhibition was created on the basis of an artistic project of national and international recognition: Kimono -joya; which after having been exhibited in several cities in Spain and Japan, was presented in the Matadero hall in Madrid in 2023. Each of the artists created their artistic design based on the traditional Japanese garment known as Haori. Each of the works presents a reduced T-shaped format, following the idea of idealising the miniature, a concept that harmonises with oriental philosophy. The material itself transports the viewer to the trade routes between East and West and to the natural exchange that is the basis for the enrichment of a profound knowledge. The Haori, as a cultural identity, has been intervened by each artist in a personal way and serves in this case as a catalyst for this exchange and a canvas for the personal vision of each of the artists who have participated in this project. José María Cruz Novillo followed an artistic career prior to a major life change that would have a very positive effect on his work. In 1965, he opened his own design studio, starting a career with milestones such as the creation of corporate images for institutions and companies like Correos, Banco Pastor, Portland Valderrivas, Urbis, Entrecanales, Tesoro Público, the coat of arms and flag of the Community of Madrid, PSOE, COPE, Grupo PRISA, Diario 16, El Mundo, El Economista, La Gaceta de los Negocios, Antena 3 Radio, Endesa, Inves, Construcciones y Contratas, Huarte, Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia, Icex, Red Eléctrica, Quinto Centenario del Descubrimiento de América, Billetes del Banco de España, Renfe, La Noche en Blanco, Bicentenario de la Guerra de la Independencia, Visionlab, Cuenca 2016, Fundación ONCE, Repsol, etc. His studio, which he co-directs with his son, the architect Pepe Cruz, has been awarded a prize in the Spanish Government's Visual Identity Competition. It has designed the posters for important films (El Sur, El Espíritu de la Colmena, Pascual Duarte, El Desengaño, Cría Cuervos, Historias del Kronen, Las Cartas de Alou, Una Estación de Paso, Mamá cumple 100 años, La Escopeta Nacional, Hay que matar a B., Familia, Barrio, Los Lunes al Sol...).
