          Marina Cruz (b. 1982) - Open Closet

Open Closet signed and dated 2006 (lower right) mixed media 36” x 24” (91 cm x 61 cm) PROVENANCE: The Space at Art Informal The works of Marina Cruz often meld everyday subjects and transform them into pieces of art saturated with personal history and quiet nostalgia. “I find myself referencing personal objects, particularly fabric, clothing, dresses from my own family archive,” she said on her artist website. “I like to explore domestic spaces and belongings and at the same time look into what makes a space a home, what makes us feel we belong.” That soft domesticity is evident in her 2006 Open Closet. In her almost otherworldly art style, Marina depicts the common image of a closet with its door open. If one peers out the window, one can see the silhouette of a tree’s branch. Perhaps it is the soft colors or the almost cartoonish style but the work drives home the point of early childhood nostalgia with her playful compositional choices echoing a child’s active imagination. The palpable emotions Marina manages to inject in her portrayals of inanimate objects are embedded with memories and historical significance. She bridges the gap between the past and the present, between dreams and memories, and between reality and subconscious. (Hannah Valiente)

Marina Cruz (b. 1982) - The Study in Mono

          Est: ₱1,600,000 - ₱2,080,000

The Study in Mono signed and dated 2021 (lower left) oil on canvas 48" x 48" (122 cm x 122 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP: Visual artist Marina Cruz takes everyday objects and transforms them into photorealistic paintings filled to the brim with nostalgia and intimacy. Her journey began in 2001 when she unearthed her mother’s baptismal dress, who was at the time often sick. “Imagining my mother as a child seemed so surreal. The dress made me ‘experience’ the childhood she once had,” she said. “I felt that I needed to preserve that memory. I realized the value of time, the value of life. You really have to savor every moment with your loved ones because you can never go back.” Marina explores the intimacy of inanimate objects, in particular that of clothes, as shown in this 2021 work. In a black-and-white closeup of a denim coat, Marina shows off her chops as she masterfully manipulates lights and shadows, a clear manifestation of meaning inherent in a well-loved object. There are signs that the clothing was wellused: the collar was lopsided, the fabric itself wrinkled. Through her wonderful still-life paintings, Marina delves into the story every object holds dear to its heart. (Hannah Valiente)

Marina Cruz (b. 1982) Stand Properly signed and dated 2008 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 36" (122 cm x 91 cm) EXHIBITED: Boston Gallery, Lest you forget: Portraits by Marina Cruz-Garcia, Quezon City, July 26 - August 14, 2008 As an artist, one of the main interests of Marina Cruz’s practice is the mystery that revolves around the idiosyncrasies of mundane and everyday life. Such a philosophy first emerged in Cruz’s work in the mid2000s where she created a series of paintings that took inspiration from the childhood photographs of her mother and her mother’s twin. These works seemingly heighten a sense of nostalgia, both as a celebration and critique of the concept, through stylized renderings of the scenes. But across Cruz’s works, the most striking element is undoubtedly the way she executes the clothing on her figures. Whether detailed or abstracted, the clothes always assume a character that heightens our connection with Cruz’s subjects. In a way, Cruz’s use of attire can be likened towards a cultural phenomenology; one that identifies the everyday clothes that we wear as not only a seminal part of our identity, but a reflection of how we want to be perceived. This can be seen in this 2007 work titled Stand Properly which showcases and hints towards the cultural norms of child-rearing at the time. (J.D.)

Marina Cruz (b. 1982) When Elisa Was Seven signed and dated 2011 (lower right) oil on canvas 60" x 48" (153 cm x 122 cm) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Singapore EXHIBITED One Raffles Quay, The Connective Thread by Marina Cruz, Organized by the Ernst & Young ASEAN Outreach, Singapore, April 14, 2011 Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Tide Table, Taipei, July 16 - October 17, 2021 LITERATURE Harper's Bazaar Magazine Art Edition, November 2021 Agraduate of BFA in Painting from the University of the Philippines, Marina Cruz has exhibited both local and internationally, namely Arndt Art Agency in Berlin, Galerie Ernst Hilger, Vienna and Mind Set Art Center, Taiwan for international and 1335MABINI, Ateneo Art Gallery and Artinformal Makati for the local ones. She received several awards as well, including the grand prize of the Philippine Art Awards in 2008. In 2021, the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in Taipei, Taiwan, mounted her first major museum solo show. Cruz discovered her prime subject, the dress, in 2002. Then a student at the University of the Philippines, she had been looking for a piece of fabric for printmaking plates when she found her mother's old baptismal dress. Struck by the old clothing, she began to paint the dresses that her grandmother had made for her children. In the hands of Cruz, they undergo a process of sublime composition to produce an effect similar to minimalist abstraction. The patterns found in each textile, recall the works of abstractions who focused on the interaction between colors and shapes. The folds and creases create a particular kind of texture, similar to the mannered stoked and painterly surfaces perpetuated by formalists. Cruz’s photorealistic paintings of vintage dresses such as the featured piece When Eliza Was Seven are emotionally saturated meditations on the afterlives of one’s personal effects. Each work doubles as a portrait, representing the essence of its wearer through traces of use. It is accompanied by notes that their once-wearers contributed, explaining when and where they would wear a particular item of clothing. The unexpected details such as threadbare hems or blotchy stains adds further vitality to the overall composition, while buttons, holes, tears, and armies of seams also completes the story. Overall, the clever presentational tactics; the devices of display and the source of her imagery; the recollection of events in her family history and the history of her depicted objects, pile the many layers in Marina Cruz that are waiting to be surfaced and understood. Her creations served as a family archive - her grandmother’s hand-sewn dresses represent a record of time, while her painting as “our portraits altogether,” as the artist told Arndt Berlin in 2016. Embedded are the legacies of three generations of women: her grandmother, who made the clothes; her mother and aunt, who once wore them; and herself who, after decades, attempts to revisit the past through them. For this reason, notwithstanding her intentionally nostalgic use of old things and old lives, we suitably recognize Cruz’s practice as a meticulously contemporary one, primarily concerned with the conflicting nature of the painted object and the actual event behind it: the visibility and invisibility of its subject; the simultaneously physical and yet ethereal nature of the painted image.

Marina Cruz (b. 1982) The Setting signed and dated 2007 (verso) acr ylic on canvas 40” x 30” (102 cm x 76 cm) This piece is accompanied by a certificate issued by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot The works of Marina Cruz have a distinctly nostalgic quality to their overall treatment, mimicking the look and feel of old yet memorable tokens and trinkets one would understandably have stowed away in some attic or box, only to be met with a sense of longing when briefly unearthed. It is through this effect that Cruz begins her exploration into memory and the material substances that inherently affect its mood and composition. Cruz’s works begs the question on whether or not memory is the domain of the mind alone, or is it instead partly swayed by the shifting characteristics of our physical world. In this 2007 acrylic on canvas piece titled Table Setting, Cruz presents us with a familiar visual space—a silhouette of a woman seated behind a round table garbed in a simple white tablecloth. By presenting us with a visually frank and commonplace scene, Cruz is able to draw from the viewer a distinctly personal experience that effectively engages them in the process of remembering and memory-making. These experiences have become metaphors—both stored and retrieved, hidden and then found— in a dazzling yet nostalgic dance whose only audience is Minerva’s owl spreading its wings in anticipation of the inevitable coming of dusk.

Marina Cruz (b. 1982) Where the Wild Things Are signed and dated 2009 (lower right) oil on canvas 48” x 36” (122 cm x 91 cm) Provenance: Private collection, Makati City   In Contemporary Philippine Art, there have been very few names that have been able to establish themselves on an international level. Among the most popular of them today is Marina Cruz. Marina Cruz has featured an assortment of styles over her years of progression and evolution; notably her hyperrealist renditions of blouses and dresses with stitches, her perspective renditions of indoor spaces, even her darker, more impressionistic works. Retrieving and reshaping memories and experiences of home are at the heart of Marina Cruz’s earlier works. Cruz utilizes the idea of home as a universal starting point in her exploration of the human psyche and its relationship with the material world. The haunting work eminently succeeds as almost being sculptural because it possesses an aura of presence despite the flatness of both the canvas and Cruz’s components. The figure radiates its own energies, as it exposes an intense communion with the surrounding space. The artist’s rougher visual elements mimic the look and feel of old objects and personal keepsakes, a technique that brings about nostalgia and longing. Cruz’s piece effectively operates at a deeply emotional level in which its aesthetic properties merely act as a starting point into a uniquely engaging experience.

Marina Cruz (b. 1982) Those Tiny Yellow Flowers signed and dated 2016 (lower left) oil on canvas The acclaimed visual artist Marina Cruz has always been fascinated by the allure of everyday objects. For Cruz, the physicality of the object is but a mere reflection of its inherent meaning. Yet these meanings are often forgotten or taken for granted given our often apathetic attitude towards objects. Thus, Cruz’s work attempts to refresh our memory by showing how objects themselves exude a sense of meaning and memory that reflects the actuality of our perceived reality. In this piece, Marina explores the intimacy that is inherent to fabric and articles of clothing. The dress, though immaculately complemented by Cruz’s masterful balance of light and shadow, is shown to have signs of use. From its lightly tufted hems, to its unkempt collar, to the semi-ironed bodice, the little nuances found within the white dress points towards a shared feeling of nostalgia. Thus, for Marina Cruz every object is a story yet to be explored. Estimate in USD $12000-$15600

It is, of course, the stories — personal, familial, and social — behind these well-worn dresses that fascinate. These frocks have become metaphors for both experience and memory; both stored and retrieved; both hidden and then found. In the work at hand, it is not clear if this is a childs’ cotton clothing, sadly outgrown; or if this belonged to her mother. The ruffled hem and puffed sleeves show careful, almost loving, folds. Faded and thinned out in places, the dress appears to have been freshly retrieved from a cabinet and unfolded onto a bedspread, showing the deep creases that only time and forgetfulness can create. For whatever reason it had been unearthed, the viewer can only muse. The dress is its own evocative narration, representing a relic of an old life, bringing to the fore how objects are powerful conduits of one’s histories and therefore of one’s very self.

Marina Cruz (b.1982) Faded Floor Tiles Marina Cruz often measures her work as that of a personal narration of her life, which her art takes us carefully through as every aspect of it. Cruz, a product of the minimalist aesthetics shows the interior of her house with the all the products and connotations that are typical in a modest Filipino home. She presents the faded floor tiles on the terraces have been dutifully cleaned in order to remove the dirt that has been rubbed off by household helper through the brush and soap water that is filled in an Orocan bucket that is carefully recreated with all its minute detail. The work that Cruz aims to depict in this view is the morning routine that happens every single day, with the cleaning of the open terrace that continues on through the mid-day, at which visitors and guest come and go with the floors maligned and dirtied once again.
