            Dec. 18, 2024

ANGELA DE LA CRUZ (La Coruña, 1965). "Burst (White)". 2012 Acrylic and oil lacquer on aluminum.

            Est: €40,000 - €50,000

ANGELA DE LA CRUZ (La Coruña, 1965). "Burst (White)". 2012 Acrylic and oil lacquer on aluminum. Measurements: 63 x 60 x 32 cm. In "Burst (White)" Ángela de la Cruz incorporates self-destruction to the creative process, and makes porous the classical distinctions between sculpture and two-dimensional abstraction. "Burst" is an emblematic work within her artistic practice, characterized by a radical approach to the classifications of the visual arts. The use of acrylic is a reference to the pictorial medium. The Galician artist explores physicality until it collapses, implodes, metaphorically speaking. The title, "Burst" (meaning "to burst" or "to burst"), suggests a pent-up energy that is finally released abruptly. This tension is evident in the deformations of the cubic form, in the gaping hole in the back of the aluminum, which also seems to allude to intense human emotions. Ángela de la Cruz herself stated for the Helga de Alvear Gallery, an entity with which she has been working since 2011, "The moment I cut a canvas or a support, I get rid of the grandiosity of the history of painting". Ángela de la Cruz studied Philosophy and Letters at the University of Santiago de Compostela, although she soon moved to London, where she furthered her studies at Chelsea College of Art, Goldsmith College and the Slade School of Fine Arts. In 2010 she was the first Spaniard to be nominated for the Turner Prize, for her exhibition "After", which she presented at the Candem Center, and she is currently a lecturer at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, the city where she lives and works. In 2017 she received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas.

ANGELA DE LA CRUZ (La Coruña, 1965). "Dislocated painting II (orange)", 2001. Oil on canvas. Provenance: Anthony Wilkinson Gallery, London. Measurements: 53 x 61 x 6 cm. In the late nineties, the London-based Spanish artist Ángela de la Cruz surprised the art world with her "everyday paintings". These are monochrome abstract paintings that, once mounted on a stretcher frame, she subjected to a process of manipulation. Her series of "Dislocated Paintings" from the early 2000s show tears, as if they had been victims of an act of vandalism. Philosophical reflection and humor are combined in such daring proposals. Angela reflects on the status of the artistic object, but the tears in the canvas are also metaphors for emotional fractures. Ángela de la Cruz herself stated for the Galería Helga de Alvear, with which she has been working since 2011, "The moment I cut the canvas, I get rid of the grandiosity of the history of painting". ANGELA DE LA CRUZ (A Coruna 1965 - lives and works in London) Super Clutter IV (blue and brown). 2005. Oil on canvas, metal and wood. 188 x 125 x 90 cm. Unique. With the artist's confirmation of authenticity. Provenance: - Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna. - Purchased from the above in 2005 by the present owner, since then private collection Italy. “One day I took the cross bar out and the painting bent. From that moment on, I looked at the painting as an object.” (Angela de la Cruz) Angela de la Cruz was born in A Coruña in Galicia in 1965. After studying philosophy in Santiago de Compostela, she moved to London and gave herself over to art. In 1994 she completed her studies with a BA at the renowned Goldsmiths College; she received her MA two years later in “Sculpture and Critical Theory” at the Slade School of Art. In 1998 she was commissioned to produce the painting “Larger than Life” for the ballroom of the Royal Festival Hall. After numerous exhibitions she took part in Manifest 5 in San Sebastián in 2004. For her exhibition “After” at Camden Arts Centre in 2010 she was nominated for the Turner Prize in the same year. In 2005 Angela de la Cruz suffered a stroke and since then has been in a wheelchair. Angela de la Cruz makes paintings into sculptures or sculptures into paintings. In the tradition of Lucio Fontana, in her works she destroys the canvas and from it creates a sculpture, which, however, never loses its quality as a painting. She takes the canvas from the stretcher, breaks up the stretcher, reassembles it in some way, re-stretches the canvas and, since the framework has been “wrongly” assembled, the canvas loses its usual precision – it is no longer straight, is creased, and the entire work is no longer perpendicular. Alternatively, she hangs the loosened canvases on the wall, whereby the classic pictorial format is also lost, or she places the canvases over objects. In the series “Clutter”, from which the present work comes, de la Cruz combines metal objects and aluminium with the canvas. These are works which were in her studio and had been forgotten. She combines them now and presents them using a metal object such as a box or a frame. The idea of a picture on a panel is entirely negated and yet we as viewers see a painting on the wall. Although it is three-dimensional and in no way reminiscent of a picture, we associate the painted canvas and its presentation on the wall with that of a painting. Angela de la Cruz plays powerfully with the concepts of painting and sculpture and causes the clear boundaries between the two genres to be blurred. --------------- ANGELA DE LA CRUZ (A Coruna 1965 - lebt und arbeitet in London) Super Clutter IV (blue and brown). 2005. Öl auf Leinwand, Metall und Holz. 188 x 125 x 90 cm. Unikat. Mit der Bestätigung der Authentizität der Künstlerin. Provenienz: - Galerie Krinzinger, Wien. - Bei obiger Galerie 2005 vom heutigen Besiter erworben, seitdem Privatsammlung Italien. „One day I took the cross bar out and the painting bent. From that moment on, I looked at the painting as an object.“ (Angela de la Cruz) Angela de la Cruz wird 1965 in A Coruna in Galizien geboren.
