    Gottlieb Leberecht Crusius 1730 Steinpleis - 1804 Leipzig "Capricci Parte I" Plate sizes: each approx. 15 x 12.5 cm. Mounted behind passe-partout on the upper edge (passe-partout dimensions 46.5 x 33.5 cm). Some browned, slightly creased, stained. Neben Augsburg findet sich im deutschen Raum keine andere Stadt, in der Rocaille-Ornamentstiche in dieser Qualität und in dem Umfang produziert wurden. Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass solche Ornamentstiche ausschließlich aus Augsburg stammen. Mit der Künstlerfamilie Crusius findet sich eine Kupferstecherfamilie in Leipzig, die ebenso Ornamentstiche herausgegeben hat. Interessant ist vor allem dieses Werk, die "Capricci" von Gottlieb Leberecht Crusius. Nicht nur zeigt er mögliche Formen der Rocaille, sondern er überträgt die Formensprache in die Natur. Nun ist die Rocaille gänzlich von der Form der Muschel abgerückt und wird in eine Landschaft integriert: Crusius nutzt hierfür unter anderem ein morsches Stück Holz, Wurzelwerke oder Felsformationen, welche durch ihre Formen zu den Trägern des Ornamentes werden. "Jetzt ist das Ornament nicht nur in der Realität des Darstellungsmodus, sondern auch in seiner Materie völlig zum Gegenstand der Natur geworden. Das, was man sehr lange, etwa am Beispiel des Akanthus für den Anfang in der Ornamententwicklung hielt, nämlich die Genese und Abstraktion aus naturhaften Formen, das stellt sich hier als Ende heraus." (Hermann Bauer, Rocaille - Zur Herkunft und zum Wesen eines Ornament-Motivs, Berlin [in: Neue Münchener Beiträge zur Kunstgeschichte, hrsg. von Hans Sedlmayr, Bd. 4] 1962, S. 53). Mit diesen Worten beschreibt Hermann Bauer, was sich hier bei Crusius abspielt: Das Ornament ist nicht nur mehr ein Schmuckelement, welches abstrakt in der vom Menschen gemachten Sphäre existiert, sondern es findet sich auch in der Schönheit der Natur wieder. Mit dieser Entwicklung findet das Ornament, welches schon seit der Antike aus der Natur heraus entwickelt wurde, wieder den Weg zurück in die Natur, wie Crusius es hier darstellt. Bauer stellt hier auch explizit Crusius an den Schluss dieser Entwicklung, er ist einer der ersten, der das Ornamentale gleichsetzt mit dem Natürlichen. Die Kurvierungen am Ornament sind nichts künstliches mehr, sondern sind Endprodukte des natürlichen Zerfalls, durch Verwitterung. Deshalb, so Bauer weiter, ist mit dieser Druckreihe das Ende der Entwicklung des Ornamentes der Rocaille erreicht, die Ornamentform kann sich laut Bauer nicht mehr weiter, als wie Crusius es darstellt, entwickeln (s. Bauer, s. O., S. 54-55). Eben das macht diese Stichreihe von Crusius so besonders und kunsthistorisch wertvoll. The mixed lot consists of eight sheets from the series "Capricci Parte I", which were probably self-published in Leipzig in the 1760s. It is possible that the series consisted of only eight sheets, as suggested by a still bound version of the sheets in the library of the Institut national dhistoire de lart in Paris (cf. inventory number NUM 4 RES 30), while the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon speaks of twelve copperplate engravings (cf. Frank, Volker, Gottlieb Leberecht Crusius, in: AKL-Online 2021). Provenienz: estate of Dr. Alexander Eugen, Duke of Württemberg (1933-2024)

    Vater mit spielenden Kindern in einem fürstlichen Garten.Pinsel in Schwarz und Grau, grau laviert. 11,9 x 7,1 cm. Um 1778.Auf Sammlerpassepartout montiert. Vorliegende Zeichnung entstand vermutlich in Vorbereitung einer Illustration zum 12. Teil der von Christian Felix Weißes herausgegebenen Kinderzeitung "Der Kinderfreund" (lt. Angabe des Vorbesitzers). Beigegeben eine Federzeichnung von Johann Conrad Krüger "Familienbesuch" wohl ebenfalls ein Entwurf für eine Illustration in Weißes "Kinderfreund". ?
