        Est: €14,000 - €16,000

PERE CRUSELLS (Barcelona, ca. 1672 - 1742) "Christ in the Garden" and "Ecce homo". Oil on copper (x2) It has frames of the nineteenth century. Signed. Measurements; 23 cm (diameters, x2); 35 cm (frames, x2). Pair of coppers that represent concrete moments of the passion of Christ; in one of them Christ in the garden of the olive trees before beginning his Calvary and in second place, when he has been ridiculed and crowned king of the Jews. In both cases the pieces, in spite of their compositional difference, present a very similar chromatic range based on the ochre tones for the background contrasted with the passion of the red and the coldness of the blue or white, which is arranged in the figure of Christ, thus enhancing his prominence. Pere Crusells is one of the most important figures of the Catalan Baroque, whose biography has been gradually reconstructed throughout the twentieth century. In fact, when in 1902 Gaspar Homar exhibited his famous "Diana", now in the MNAC, the work was presented as anonymous and belonging to the French school, despite being signed and dated. It was Joaquim Folch i Torres who in 1929 provided the first biographical information about Crusells, of whom we now know that he came from a humble family, being the son of a shoemaker. He began his training in 1689, when he entered as an apprentice in the workshop of the painter Josep Vives. In 1704 he joined the College of Painters, where he would later occupy the positions of treasurer and consul, and a year later he married the daughter of the painter Onofre Casanovas. He had his own workshop, where he trained several disciples. Within his career he enjoyed special success during the stay of Archduke Charles in Barcelona, a period in which he obtained important profits thanks to various commissions. He was a painter of creation but also, as was common at the time, he carried out various decorative painting projects. His work was varied and covered all types of painting, including miniatures, as Francesc Fontbona (XX) points out. This author points out that this fact would have favored his loss of vision, which was already absolute in 1742, date in which he ceases to appear in the documents. It is known that he even painted portraits the size of a coin, and that he used the technique of oil on copper on numerous occasions. He also painted for churches and convents in Barcelona, such as the Capuchins and the Dominicans, and portraits both in miniature ("Archduke Charles", 1708) and in larger format ("Philip V half-length"). He is currently represented in the MNAC, the Institut Municipal d'Història de Barcelona and the Real Academia Catalana de Bellas Artes de Sant Jordi.
