        • William Crozier HRHA (1930-2011) STILL LIFE WITH PLANT AND BOUQUET
          Dec. 02, 2024

William Crozier HRHA (1930-2011) STILL LIFE WITH PLANT AND BOUQUET

          Est: €8,000 - €12,000

William Crozier HRHA (1930-2011) STILL LIFE WITH PLANT AND BOUQUET oil on canvas h:30  w:36 in. Provenance: Collection of Bank of Ireland This sparse still life comprising a potted plant and a bouquet of flowers, the latter placed on a table the former suspended against the backdrop, is a bold and theatrical painting that demonstrates the artist's expert use of vibrant colour, proportion, space and brushstroke. The narrow borders across the base and right-hand side of the composition frame the scene and are a familiar device in his oeuvre, as is the dot motif. Crozier acknowledged the influence his time working in the theatre had on his work with Brian McAvera for the Irish Arts Review in 2003, "I learnt the skills of scale... of how to make things real... The theatre has had a permanent influence on my painting. I tend to "light" my paintings as they would do in a play or opera I use, consciously or unconsciously, various leitmotifs to unite the space." Constructions in Colour & Light, Bill Crozier & Brian McAvera, Irish Arts Review (Spring 2003) Vol. 20., no. 1 Born in Scotland but with Irish roots, William Crozier graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in the early 1950s and later moved to London where he successfully exhibited at the ICA, Drian and Arthur Tooth galleries, moving in the same circles as Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon. Also during the decade he visited Paris, which left a lasting impression on him, and in 1953 relocated to Dublin working in the Olympia theatre painting stage sets. There he moved within the Irish literary set counting among his friends Patrick Kavanagh, whose influence helped shape his interpretation of the Irish landscape. Crozier was awarded Premio Lissone in Milan in 1960 and three years later traveled to Spain in the company of Irish poet Anthony Cronin, a trip which greatly impacted his work. He became an Irish citizen at the age of 43 and after two decades teaching, from the 1980s divided his time between homes in Hampshire and West Cork where his paintings of the Irish landscape became iconic. Retrospectives of the artist's work were held in the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork and the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin in 1991. In 1992 he was elected Aosdána and he won the Oireachtas Gold medal for Painting in Dublin in 1994. He was also an honorary member of the RHA. He died at his home in the UK in 2011 and in 2017 the Irish Museum of Modern Art mounted 'The Edge of the Landscape' , a two-part retrospective of his work in Dublin and Cork as part of their Modern Irish Masters Series. His work is found in the national galleries of Ireland, Canada, Poland and Australia, Tate, London and other major collections in Ireland and the UK.

          William Crozier,  Greta, 1962

          Est: £8,000 - £12,000

William Crozier,  Irish 1930-2011 -  Greta, 1962;  oil on canvas, signed on the reverse 'Crozier', 91.2 x 91.2 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  The Collection of Mary and Alan Hobart, Founders of Pyms Gallery, purchased c.2010  Exhibited:  Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol ‘William Crozier. Paintings 1959/63’, 30th March-26th April 1963, no.16;  Pyms Gallery, London, 'William Crozier: Early Work', 9th June-20th July 2010, cat. no.36, illus. p.63 (titled 'October, 1962')  Note:  a photo-record of the work is included in the Arthur Tooth & Sons archive, no.C3627.  The present work marks a major turning point in the artist's career as he came to full aesthetic maturity. He had held his first solo exhibition a few years before at the Parton Gallery in 1958 and in works such as 'Greta, 1962', he combines an understanding of European gestural painting with his own individual subject matter, isolating figures against a deeply coloured landscape in a manner reminiscent of Francis Bacon. The subject of the work is unknown, but at the time Crozier frequently made paintings referencing close female friends.  Crozier would exhibit a number of these works with the celebrated gallery Arthur Tooth & Sons, London, in 1962 and 1963, and they would help cement his work on an international stage. A number are now in public collections, such as 'Fallen Man II, 1961' (Glasgow Museums Resource Centre), 'Self-Portrait, 1961' (Ruth Borchard Collection) and 'White-Eyed Buzzard, 1962' (Kirklees Museums and Galleries). The interest in works by Crozier of this period has continued with the in 2011, the Imperial War museum purchasing ‘Bourlon Wood, 1961' in 2011 and the National Gallery of Ireland purchasing ‘Flanders Fields, 1961’ emphasising the importance of this period in the artist's oeuvre.

          Est: €6,000 - €8,000

William Crozier (1930-2011) Untitled Oil on board, 91 x 71.5cm (35¾ x 28'') Signed William Crozier’s first solo show, mostly of collages, at the Parton Gallery in London in 1957, put him firmly on the contemporary art map, though it is possible that he wasn’t altogether satisfied with the direction his work was taking at the time. The following year, besides holding on to a studio in the city, he rented a cottage close to the village of Pebmarsh in northern Essex. As luck would have it, he had settled on a remote location just in time to experience an exceptionally long, severe winter. ?Rather than retreating back to London, he seems to have relished the hard conditions and the desolate terrain. But then, he had not been drawn to the countryside for its picturesque qualities. Rather, he sought out a landscape that reflected what he saw as the ominous state of the world, and he found a stark beauty in the burnt stubble of the windswept fields. He had taken part in the first anti-nuclear Aldermaston March at Easter 1958 and something of the anxiety of the time over potential nuclear conflict and environmental devastation finds its way into his work. From our vantage point it seems to anticipate the current environmental crises. ?His landscapes of the time, with boldly stated earth colours, are dynamic, high-contrast compositions made with looping rhythms that enclose whirlpools of energy. As several commentators have observed, they are not about capturing a sense of place but address our relationship to landscape in a more universal way. ??Born in Yoker, Glasgow to parents from Antrim, Crozier attached great importance to his Irish connections, though rather than encouraging a sense of Irish - or Scottish - identity, it set him firmly against insular notions of identity, and he saw himself as a European. After studying art in Glasgow he spent time in Paris and relished the bohemian, intellectual life of the Left Bank. Anthony Cronin became a good friend in Dublin and they spent time in Spain, another artistically formative experience. Without doubt, his later connection with nature in Ireland - he and his wife Katherine Crouan bought a cottage in West Cork in the early 1980s and later settled there - revitalised his painting and printmaking, and the Irish art public, enraptured with his innovative take on the Irish landscape, took him to their hearts. He wrote At Paul's Pound Shop in Skibbereen I found the perfect vehicle - the tin tray. Here was the commonplace object which could be transformed, the useful made beautiful, even serene or uplifting. The trays for him were a form of serious play. They were always painted at the end of a day's work at the easel, when the mix of colours on the palette was just as he wanted it.

William Crozier HRHA (1930 - 2011) Luxurious Garden Gouache on paper, 58 x 82cm (23 x 32½) Signed Provenance: With The Scottish Gallery, label verso From the early 1980s, William Crozier and his wife Katherine Crouan established a base in West Cork. London gallerist Angela Flowers was the vital link. She’d had a house in Rosscarbery for many years. They visited her there and when she launched a gallery offshoot her house, Flowers West, in 1985, she began with a solo show by Crozier. He and Katherine gradually spent more and more time in West Cork. He was inspired by the distinctive landscape, and he was exceptional in highlighting the unexpectedly bold, intense bursts of colour produced by displays of seasonal blooms, including montbretia and fuchsia, fields of crops and the glittering, shifting light reflected and enhanced by the water. It was all ideally suited to his gift for pictorial organisation, a gift sharpened by his time designing and painting theatre sets in 1950s Dublin. Born in Yoker, Glasgow to parents from Antrim, Crozier attached great importance to his Irish connections, though rather than encouraging a sense of Irish - or Scottish - identity, it set him firmly against insular notions of identity, and he saw himself as a European. After studying art in Glasgow he spent time in Paris and relished the bohemian, intellectual life of the Left Bank. Anthony Cronin became a good friend in Dublin and they spent time in Spain, another artistically formative experience. He found great success in London, though he seems eventually to have tired of a trend in his work towards expressive figuration. Without doubt, the connection with nature in Ireland revitalised his painting and printmaking, and the Irish art public, enraptured with his innovative take on the Irish landscape, took him to their hearts. The liveliness, sinuous patterning and buoyant colour of this “luxurious” Irish garden clearly evidence the delight he took in his newly discovered surroundings. Aidan Dunne, August 2023

Provenance: Private Collection Evening Field is believed to date from c.2003-2007. At this late period in his career Crozier had stripped back his landscape imagery to its essential components, making his later works notable for their stillness and formal rigour which is achieved through masterly use of colour and composition. Paintings such as Evening Field relied on the artist's deep familiarity with a particular place but the lack of any topographical reference prevents any recognition of a specific location. Instead, these contemplative later landscapes give us Crozier reflecting on a month in the year, a season or, as here, a time of day: evening.

Provenance: Arthur Tooth & Sons, London (label verso); Private Collection Exhibited: 1964 'William Crozier'. Arthur Tooth & Sons Ltd, London 8th - 16th September 1964. No.13 (illustrated) Henry's Cross was painted by William Crozier in the aftermath of an extended stay in southern Spain that was of critical importance for his art. In what was then the remote village of Alhaurín el Grande in Andalusia, where he lodged with the writer, Anthony Cronin, Crozier created a prodigious body of work in a passionate reaction to the Andalusian environment and its culture that would remain with him throughout his life. Crozier said he discovered in Spain "a landscape without mid-tones" and the heat and light of the Mediterranean gave his painting a new, striking colour palette in which the brightest hues are laid alongside the blackest of blacks. Also, in Andalusia Crozier discovered that the abstract patterns of Islamic architecture served a transcendent, spiritual purpose. Drawing on these influences, Crozier's "Spanish" landscapes, of which Henry's Cross is a strong example, are characterised by swirling arabesques and decorative patterning, though their exuberance, as in much of Crozier's work, is tempered by a prevailing sense of apprehension. The anthropomorphic feeling in Henry's Cross was intentional. Crozier wrote about these landscapes "I like them to have the feeling that man is just temporarily absent from the scene." In 1964 Crozier exhibited a selection of his 'Spanish' work at the Arthur Tooth & Sons gallery in London, which included Henry's Cross. The painting was illustrated in the catalogue, to which Crozier contributed a long statement which serves as a manifesto. Crozier wrote "I have found that my pictures are most successful when certain requirements are fulfilled. First that they have their starting point in observed nature. Yet not too closely observed,…" and he goes on to speak of wanting his paintings to have "…a sense of austerity and isolation, of emotional unease and perhaps a suggestion of tragedy". He continues "They may also be beautiful but this is not a matter which concerns me."
