Amongst their number were Anne Redpath, William Gillies and William MacTaggart, a group that would later be known as the Edinburgh School. Due to his untimely death Crozier is generally less well-known than his contemporaries, yet his impact upon the group was profound, and some consider his work as amongst the School’s most original. Crozier developed a particularly close friendship with MacTaggart, despite an age difference of ten years. Crozier’s structural-analytical approach had a formative influence on MacTaggart’s development as a painter, and from 1923 they shared a studio on Frederick Street, Edinburgh. Both suffered in the cold due to chronic health conditions, and in the winter months they made frequent excursions to the south of France to paint, sometimes visiting the St-Raphaël home of their friends Redpath and and her husband James Michie. The scenic town of Grimaud is situated in the hills above St Tropez. The precise date of Crozier’s Grimaud oil is unknown, but it is likely to have been realised between 1924 and 1928 when he most frequently accompanied MacTaggart to France. Throughout his career Crozier explored the effects of light and shadow on topography; in this dazzling landscape the sun appears to be high in the sky with little shadow cast at all, and Crozier’s palette, applied with characteristically directional mark-making, therefore comprises of the bright hues of the Mediterranean countryside under the midday sun. MacTaggart also painted a strikingly similar view of Grimaud during the same period (see Iain Gale, William MacTaggart, Edinburgh 1998, p.26., pl.2. ('Grimaud' of c.1924-28).

Spanish Landscape brings together the gritty expressionism found in Crozier's earlier Essex landscapes with a darker foreboding that was to enter his work in the mid to late 1960s. He had travelled to Southern Spain with the Irish poet Anthony Cronin in 1963 and it is this trip that inspired the present work.Born in 1930 in Scotland he graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1953 and naturally gravitated to Soho and the London art scene via the cafes and bars of Paris. Influenced by the European Avant Garde Crozier found early success both in London and abroad. He was awarded the prize of best English artist at Primo Lissone in Milan. In the same year that the present work was painted he was included in the ground breaking 1964 Arts Council exhibition Six Young Painters, which found him exhibiting with Bridget Riley, Dorothy Mead, David Hockney, Peter Blake, and Euan Uglow.

MacDonald Footnote: Note: Crozier's death at the age of thirty-three meant that his career was short and his oeuvre is small. A French Sunlit Market is a rare example of the work with which he nevertheless established a reputation as a key member of the Edinburgh School. This group of artists included William Gillies and William MacTaggart amongst others and rose to prominence during the inter-war period. They met as students at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) with Crozier eventually sharing a studio with MacTaggart. Following studies under André Lhote in Paris, Crozier and MacTaggart spent several winters together in France during the 1920s. The present work is thought to have been inspired by one such trip. Its low-toned palette and geometrical simplication of form, particularly obvious in architectural terms, shows Crozier's sensitive handling of light and colour, as well as an awareness of Cubism. Crozier died following a fall in his studio. His ECA contemporary, Harold Harvey Wood, later recalled 'Scottish painting suffered a very severe loss in the premature death of Wiliam Crozier, who, quite apart from his considerable gifts as a painter, represented a kind of oasis in the illiterate and philistine deserts of the Scottish studios' (as quoted in Ann Simpson, William Crozier 1893-1930, Edinburgh 1995, p.8).
