Crowninshield, Frederic (America, 1845-1918) oil on canvas of dry trees had signed and dated F. Crowninshield 3/14 (Bottom right). Crowninshield graduated from Harvard College in 1866 and studied abroad for 11 years; under Thomas Rowbotham of Leeson in London, Thomas Couture in Italy and Alexandre Cabanel in Paris. From 1879 to 1885 he was a professor at the Museum of Fine Arts school of drawing and painting when it was located in the basement of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in Copley Square. Crowninshield then moved to New York, where he was the first president of the National Society of Painters Mural from 1895 to 1899, and President of the Federation of Fine Arts from 1900 to 1909. In 1911 he was appointed director of the American Academy in Rome . One of his best known works is a stained glass window representing the progress of the pilgrim John Bunyan, entitled "The Land of Emmanuel," in the Episcopal Church of Emmanuel, Boston. He designed the window in 1899 and had dedicated his mother. Condition: Painting in perfect condition, cracks in the thickest areas of paint. Frame in great condition, signs of showing wear, scratches, wear to varnish, bumps. Measurements: approx. 18 inches x 24 inches (24.75 inches x 30.5 inches - framed). Domestic Shipping: $100

FREDERIC CROWNINSHIELD (American, 1845-1918) Mount Vesuvius, 1916 Oil on canvas 25 x 35 inches (63.5 x 88.9 cm) Signed and dated lower right: F. Crowninshield / 1916 PROVENANCE: Purchased by the father of the current owner from Gallery Mayo, Richmond, Virginia. Crowningshield was born in Boston on November 27, 1845 into what he called a "poor but good" branch of the well-heeled Boston Brahmin Crowninshield family. He graduated from Harvard College in 1866, and studied abroad 11 years; in London, with Thomas Couture in Italy, and with Alexandre Cabanel in Paris. From 1879 to 1885 he taught at the Museum of Fine Arts School of Drawing and Painting when it was housed in the basement of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in Copley Square. Crowninshield then moved to New York, where he served as the first president of the National Society of Mural Painters from 1895 to 1899, and president of the Fine Arts Federation from 1900 to 1909. In 1911 he was appointed director of the American Academy in Rome. This is an ambitious late work by the artist which has been in private hands for the past sixty years.

Frederic Crowninshield, A.N.A. (American/Italian, 1845-1918), pair of landscape paintings including "Autumn" and "Winter", both oil on beveled wood panel, monogrammed lower left, 13 7/8 in. x 18 in., and 13 3/4 in. x 20 in. respectively, both in modern giltwood frames. Note: Crowninshield was a landscape and mural painter, and the author of several books on art and creativity. He was born in Boston and attended Harvard College before embarking on a study tour of Europe which lasted over a decade. Crowninshield studied with Charles Rowbotham (English, 1858-1921), Thomas Couture (French, 1815-1879), and attended the École des Beaux Arts in Paris under the instruction of Alexandre Cabanel (French, 1823-1889). A beloved art instructor, Crowninshield taught at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School of Drawing and Painting, the Boston Art School, the Art Students League in New York, and was President of the Fine Arts Federation in New York from 1900 to 1909. Most significantly, he was appointed Director of the American Academy in Rome in 1911, remaining in Italy until his death. Crowninshield took part in numerous exhibitions including those at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Paris Salon. He was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the National Society of Mural Painters, and was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Art in 1905. Reference: Jaffe, et al.
