Jasper Francis Cropsey Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Painter, b. 1823 - d. 1900

When an employer saw 15-year-old Jasper Francis Cropsey's paintings and realized his talent, he provided him with the tools and opportunity to develop his skills. During this five-year architectural apprenticeship, which also developed his ability to draw buildings, he was trained and influenced by Maury, Ranney, and Mount, watercolor and genre painters of the mid-1800s. Jasper Francis Cropsey's paintings were vivid, intricately colored landscapes, created in watercolors and oils with great accuracy and attention to detail.

Cropsey's paintings for sale in the early days mainly covered his years of growing up on the farm on Staten Island. Later, Jasper Cropsey's prints helped residents of Europe learn about the landscapes of North America. In 1867, Cropsey became a founding member of the American Watercolor Society and gained his name on the art scene as a Hudson River School painter. Purchase historic landscape paintings online to capture a little piece of bygone days.

ATTR JASPER FRANCIS CROPSEY AMERICAN OIL PAINTING

          Est: $100 - $150

Attributed to Jasper Francis Cropsey, American, 1823 to 1900, oil painting on canvas depicting a river landscape scene, 1867. Signed and dated, lower left. Framed. Jasper Francis Cropsey was an American architect and artist. He is best known for his Hudson River School landscape paintings. Cropseys interest in architecture continued throughout his life and was a strong influence in his painting, most evident in his precise arrangement and outline of forms. But Cropsey was best known for his lavish use of color and, as a first-generation member from the Hudson River School, painted autumn landscapes that startled viewers with their boldness and brilliance. As an artist, he believed landscapes were the highest art form and that nature was a direct manifestation of God. He also felt a patriotic affiliation with nature and saw his paintings as depicting the rugged and unspoiled qualities of America. One of a kind artwork.

Maddox, dated May 10, 2004, in which the work is described as being included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of Cropsey's work. Cropsey, a prominent figure of the Hudson River School, earned the nickname "The Painter of Autumn" for his frequent depictions of the season. But beyond grand vistas of the Hudson Valley, Cropsey found inspiration closer to home in the Greenwood Lake region, straddling the border between New Jersey and New York. It is here that the artist offered a more intimate version of autumn. Cropsey's Greenwood Lake landscapes are characterized by a rich tapestry of color. He reveled in the fiery oranges, deep reds, and burnished yellows that transformed trees and foliage, often setting them against a backdrop of forested mountains or under a blush-colored sky, as in the present painting. As in his most compelling works, light serves a vital function; here, sun filters through the clouds, casting long shadows and illuminating the mirror-like surface of the water. Cropsey's Greenwood Lake paintings were more than just picturesque panoramas. He regularly included figures–hunters with their dogs, families picnicking or, here, a man and his horse en route to a rustic cabin–which serve as counterpoints to the splendor of the season. These figures add a sense of scale and narrative, and are suggestive of a (seemingly) harmonious relationship between nature and culture. While Cropsey's larger-scale works celebrate the vastness of the American landscape, works like Landscape, Near Greenwood Lake, N.J. extol the serene beauty of a region that fascinated him throughout his career.

In looking at the back, we do not see any evidence of relining of the painting and everything appears to be original with no repair work or patches. We do not know the provenance of the early days of the painting but in 1991, when Tolie's mother passed and there was an inventory of her estate, this painting was listed. So, we know that the family had this painting prior to 1991. Wished we knew when it was purchased by the family, but we don't.

"Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823 - 1900) Watercolor on Paper, Signed & Dated Lower Right "" J. F. Cropsey 1898 "" Cropsey trained as an architect under the tuition of Joseph Trench in the early 1840s, a period in which he was also trained in watercolor painting, instructed by Edward Maury, and took some life drawing courses at the National Academy of Design.[2] He set up his own architecture office in 1843, but began exhibiting his watercolors at the National Academy of Design in 1844. A year later he was elected an associate member and turned exclusively to landscape painting; shortly after he was featured in an exhibition entitled ""Italian Compositions"".Cropsy traveled in Europe from 1847 to 1849, visiting England, France, Switzerland, and Italy. He was elected a full member of the Academy in 1851. Cropsey was a personal friend of Henry Tappan, the president of the University of Michigan from 1852 to 1863. At Tappan's invitation, he traveled to Ann Arbor in 1855 and produced two paintings, one of the Detroit Observatory, and a landscape of the campus.[3] He went abroad again in 1856, and resided seven years in London, sending his pictures to the Royal Academy and to the International exhibition of 1862.Starrucca Viaduct, Pennsylvania (1865)Returning home, he opened a studio in New York and specialized in autumnal landscape paintings of the northeastern United States, often idealized and with vivid colors. Cropsey co-founded, with ten fellow artists, the American Society of Painters in Water Colors in 1866. He also made the architectural designs for the stations of the elevated railways in New York."

A year later he was elected an associate member and turned exclusively to landscape painting; shortly after he was featured in an exhibition entitled ""Italian Compositions"". Cropsy traveled in Europe from 1847 to 1849, visiting England, France, Switzerland, and Italy. He was elected a full member of the Academy in 1851. Cropsey was a personal friend of Henry Tappan, the president of the University of Michigan from 1852 to 1863. At Tappan's invitation, he traveled to Ann Arbor in 1855 and produced two paintings, one of the Detroit Observatory, and a landscape of the campus.[3] He went abroad again in 1856, and resided seven years in London, sending his pictures to the Royal Academy and to the International exhibition of 1862. Starrucca Viaduct, Pennsylvania (1865) Returning home, he opened a studio in New York and specialized in autumnal landscape paintings of the northeastern United States, often idealized and with vivid colors. Cropsey co-founded, with ten fellow artists, the American Society of Painters in Water Colors in 1866. He also made the architectural designs for the stations of the elevated railways in New York."

Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823 - 1900) River Landscape Watercolor & Gouache on Paper. Signed in pencil on reverse of sheet. Jasper Francis Cropsey, in the company of Frederic Edwin Church, Asher B. Durand, and John F. Kensett, was one of the most respected painters of the Hudson River School. At the peak of his career, from the mid-1840s through the 1870s, Cropsey enjoyed fame in both England and the United States for his views of American scenery, particularly his richly colored pieces capturing the glories of the American autumn. At the age of thirteen he made and submitted a scale model of a country house to the annual exhibition of the Mechanics' Institute in New York City. His model won a medal and brought the youth to the attention of New York architect Joseph Trench. Cropsey served a five-year apprenticeship with Trench, who encouraged him to embellish his architectural drawings with landscape backgrounds and figures. To this end, Trench enabled Cropsey to study drawing with the landscape painter Edward Maury. Although the practice of architecture supported Cropsey throughout the 1840s, it was the rendering of his designs on paper rather than the design process itself that ignited his passion. His success with the watercolor medium kindled a desire to paint with oils, which Cropsey took up in 1841. He learned to handle the new medium by copying from existing works of art, which included his own watercolors as well as Dutch paintings and engravings of paintings by Claude Lorrain. Cropsey was a founding member of the American Water Color Society in 1866. His other memberships included the Century Club, the Lotos Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Artists Aid Society. Major examples of his work are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Peabody Institute, Baltimore; the New-York Historical Society; Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.
