Croft created a significant body of photographic work in Redfern in the 1990s. She challenged media coverage of the time by presenting positive images of urban Indigenous people, many of whom were the artist’s family, friends and co-workers. In 2023, she became the first Australian Indigenous woman to assume the Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University.
