Probably acquired at the sale by Sir William Forbes, 7th Bt. of Pitsligo, Colinton House,Greenhill House and Fettercairn House, Kincardineshire. Thence by descent in the Forbes family at Fettercairn House, Kincardineshire, until 2017. The top and two bottom drawings on this album page may be fully attributed to Donato Creti, while the two drawings of putti appear to be the work of an artist in his studio or circle. The facial types of the three drawings by Creti are found throughout his oeuvre. In his biography of the artist, Giampietro Zanotti writes that Donato Cretiâs drawings were highly regarded by his contemporaries. Landscapes, figure studies and portraits make up the bulk of Cretiâs drawings, many of which, according to Zanotti, were given away as presents by the artist. The attribution of the three drawings by Creti on this album page has been confirmed by Marco RiccÃ²mini, who suggests that the circular drawing at the top may have been part of a larger composition. Two similar album pages, each containing seven small drawings by or attributed to Creti, were once in the collection of the 18th century painter Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792).

Unser Skizzenblatt ist eng verbunden mit Cretis Freskozyklus "Leben des Achilles", den der Künstler ab 1714 im Auftrag von Marco Sbaraglia in Bologna ausführte. Der auf einem Gefäß lagernde männliche Akt bereitet die Figur des an einem breiten Strom lagernden Flussgottes in einem Landschaftgemälde vor, dass als Supraporte gedacht war. Die Madonna in den Wolken ist dagegen eine vorbereitende Studie für den oberen Teil des Altarbildes der hl. Riccomini 1989), è indubbiamente uno dei capolavori maturi di Donato Creti e unica testimonianza di una commissione da parte del francese duca di Noailles, che desiderava due grandi tele inerenti alla vita di Alessandro Magno (olio su tela, cm 163X122) e di cui si persero le tracce già nel XVIII secolo. Le opere, come si desume dalla corrispondenza tra il duca e l'artista, dovevano raffigurare il Taglio del nodo gordiano e Alessandro presenta la missiva al medico. Un documento del 28 maggio 1736 attesta che i modelli erano giunti al committente da poco più di un mese (Cfr. Galli 1939), ponendo di conseguenza un punto fermo sulla loro data d'esecuzione, mentre il pagamento dei dipinti 'finiti' avvenne il 30 maggio del 1740 (Cfr. Galli 1939). La costruzione scenica e la felicità delle stesure, avvalorate dalla bellissima conservazione, attestano il talento dell'autore e il suo ruolo di protagonista nel panorama artistico bolognese durante la prima metà del Settecento, tenendo conto che il Creti fu un vero e proprio enfant prodige, che a soli sedici anni donò un autoritratto al suo protettore il conte Alessandro Fava e pochi anni dopo dipinse per la chiesa di San Gregorio dei Mendicanti il suo primo dipinto pubblico. L'arte del Creti evidenzia l'interesse per le opere di Tiziano e Veronese che verosimilmente vide durante il suo viaggio di studio a Venezia ma è straordinaria la sua aderenza alla poetica rococò pur mantenendo una disposizione classica e nel dipinto in esame si avverte quella sorta di tenuità della magniloquenza 'in favore di una recita raffinatissima' (Cfr. Matteucci, 1996). È altresì sorprendente cogliere in questo modello i diversi pentimenti, come l'aver spostato a sinistra il soldato armato di lancia per ampliare lo spazio centrale e segnare una maggiore distanza dai protagonisti che si scalano in diagonale, con la figura del medico in primo piano a destra. Per non dire della sapiente orchestrazione cromatica delle vesti e della tenda che cade dall'alto, efficace artificio scenico che conduce altresì lo sguardo sul fondale architettonico, confermando una straordinaria accuratezza dell'esecuzione e le stesse parole dello Zanotti: 'per sua professione studia senza fine, sospira, s'affanna e dà in ismanie, tal è il desiderio che egli ha di perfezione, e di gloria, né mai si stanca di finire e rifinire l'opera sua' (Cfr. Donato CRETI Crémone, 1671 - Bologne, 1749 L'adoration des mages Huile sur toile The Adoration of the Magi, oil on canvas, by D. Creti h: 63 w: 50,50 cm Commentaire : Reprise autographe dans des dimensions presque identiques du tableau conservé à la Galleria Nazionale du Palazzo Corsini à Rome1, notre 'Adoration des mages' révèle tout le talent de coloriste de Donato Creti, dans la lignée des maîtres bolonais du XVIIe siècle. La technique de l'artiste travaillant par petits traits " hachurés " parallèles, dans ses innombrables dessins à la plume comme dans ses toiles, se retrouve dans notre tableau. Cette technique s'explique notamment par la formation du jeune artiste qui, arrivé de Crémone à Bologne, s'entraîne au dessin d'après les gravures de Guido Reni. Kopf eines aufblickenden Mannes im Profil. Schwarze Kreide auf graugrünem Bütten. D. 14,6 cm. In schwarzer Feder unten rechts bez. "Il Creti fece", verso wohl von derselben Hand "Ale. Maggiori comprò - a Bologna nel 1789". Wz. Initialen GS im Kreis mit Dreiblatt. Laut Angabe des Vorbesitzers hat Christel Thiem, Stuttgart, die Autorschaft Cretis mündlich bestätigt. Die rückseitige Sammlernotiz bestätigt den Eintrag bei Lugt, dass auf den von Alessandro Maggiore in Bologna erworbenen Blättern kein Datum nach 1800 zu finden sei. - Provenienz: Sammlung Alessandro Maggiore (Lugt 3005b).
