    Attributed to Daniele Crespi (Busto Arsizio,1590 /1597 - Milan,1630) “Saint Peter of Alcantara”. Oil on canvas. Re-lined. 97,5 x 75 cm. Deep psychological portrait of the Franciscan saint, Peter of Alcantara. He lived in the 16th century and was fundamental in the reforms made within his order. In this century, he was also the spiritual advisor of Saint Teresa of Avila, a Spanish mystic of great religious importance in the 16th and 17th centuries. The loose brown tunic that the saint wears is recognizable as the Franciscan habit, the order to which he belonged, always accompanied by a cord with three knots alluding to the Franciscans' vows of poverty, obedience and chastity. He is depicted in the act of writing his “Treatises on Prayer and Meditation”, a text in which he sets out the principles on which he believed religious life should be based. He therefore decided to found the branch of Franciscans “of strict observance”. We see him, portrayed here with an extremely thin face with marked cheekbones, directing his gaze to the Holy Spirit, who, in the form of a dove, accompanies him from above. His presence demonstrates the illumination that the saint received from heaven. Teresa of Avila, an admirer of the Saint's way of life, wrote a great deal about him, asked him for spiritual advice and confessed to him, as well as referring in her writings to the occasions on which he had appeared to her. She affirmed that he had “the world at his feet”, which is why he is sometimes represented with his feet resting on a sphere, symbol of the world. He died on October 28, 1562 in Arenas de San Pedro, Avila. Gregory XV beatified him in 1622 and Clement IX canonized him in April 1669.

Neilson, p. 61, n. 60, Tav. XIX). Un altro interessante raffronto è possibile con la testa di Apostolo raffigurata nel San Giovanni Battista che addita Cristo custodita nella chiesa di San Giovanni Battista a Busto Arsizio (cfr. Crespi h: 49,50 w: 58 cm Commentaire : Œuvre saisissante et d'une iconographie rare, ce chef coupé de Saint Catherine nous offre une vision de la Sainte bien différente des scènes de martyres, de son mariage mystique avec le Christ Enfant ou des Sacra conversazione au sein desquelles elle prend place dans la peinture italienne. Son auteur Daniele Crespi, identifié par Francesco Frangi, est un des plus grands peintres de la peinture lombarde du premier Seicento. Formé par son parent, le plus célèbre Giovanni Battista Crespi, dit Il Cerano, au sein de l'Accademia Ambrogiana vers 1620-21, Daniele reste célèbre pour ses sujets de prédilection macabres ou ses scènes de la passion du Christ. Il fait partie de cette génération de peintres actifs entre les deux grandes pestes qui frappèrent le Nord de l'Italie, celle de 1576 et celle de 1630, et inévitablement son œuvre est marquée par ces atmosphères dramatiques au sein desquelles sa famille et ses proches évoluèrent, perdant la vie pour beaucoup d'entre eux (25% de la population d'Italie du Nord succombe à la seconde grande vague de peste de 1630). Notre toile, découverte dans un état de conservation parfait et rarissime, illustre les différents attributs de la Sainte mais révèle surtout l'immense talent que possède Daniele Crespi pour représenter la mort dans sa vérité la plus crue. L'artiste a traité de façon extrêmement similaire une tête de Saint Jean-Baptiste dans un tableau présenté en vente publique en 2024 et de dimensions proches1. Sur notre toile, le sang s'est vidé du chef de la Sainte et déjà la peau livide commence à devenir blafarde, tirant sur les verts. Les yeux et les lèvres sont traités avec de subtils accents de violine et pourtant un seul effet domine : la sérénité de l'attitude d'une Sainte martyrisée ayant accepté l'idée de la mort. 1 - Vente anonyme ; Londres, Sotheby's, 4 décembre 2024, lot 190 (La tête de Saint Jean-Baptiste, Huile sur panneau de peuplier, 30 x 53,5 cm.)     Daniele Crespi (Busto Arsizio 1597/1600 - Milano 1630) Ritratto maschile Olio su tela 65 x 49 cm Le influenze artistiche che formarono Crespi furono il manierismo accademico di Camillo Procaccini, quello patetico ed espressionista del Cerano ed il realismo crudo di Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, detto il Morazzone. Daniele Crespi fece evolvere un linguaggio personale che denota una certa eleganza, probabilmente derivata dall'osservazione delle opere di Andrea De Ferrari, Rubens e Van Dyck, mitigatrice delle esuberanze barocche. Le sue prime opere risalgono al 1619, come la Decollazione del Battista nella cappella di S.Giovanni e l'Adorazione dei magi in Sant'Alessandro in Zebedia. Seguirono la decorazione della cappella dell'Annunciata nella basilica di Sant'Eustorgio e la tele per la chiesa di San Protaso ad Monachos, ora in San Giovanni a Busto Arsizio. I migliori risultati del Crespi sono rappresentati dal Digiuno di san Carlo Borromeo (Milano, chiesa di Santa Maria della Passione) e dal Ciclo di San Bruno nella Certosa di Garegnano. Inoltre Daniele Crespi è stato un notevole ritrattista. Fra le sue opere più importanti di tal genere si annoverano l'Autoritratto degli Uffizi (1627), il ritratto di Manfredo Settala della Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, il ritratto del chirurgo Enea Fioravanti del Castello Sforzesco, il ritratto di Antonio Olgiati della Collezione Koelliker a Milano, il Ritratto di gentiluomo con barba e il Ritratto di giovane della Collezione Borromeo, Isola Bella, Stresa.     BAPTISM OF CHRIST measurements note 15 1/4 by 11 3/4 in.; 38.7 by 29.9 cm. oil on canvas NOTE The present work would appear to be a bozzetto or ricordo of the Baptism by Crespi in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan (see N.W. Neilson, Daniele Crespi, Soncino 1996, p. 37. cat. no. 20, reproduced plate XXVIII). The Brera altarpiece was commissioned for the Bonfanti chapel in Santa Maria della Grazie, Monza where it remained until 1810. Most recent scholarship has dated it to late in the artist's career, between 1628-30 (see Neilson op. cit.) and a similar date for the present painting seem reasonable.

Morandotti, "Giuseppe Vermiglio Caino e Abele," in Dipinti Lombardi del Seicento. Collezione Koelliker, Milan 2004, pp. 66-68, reproduced (as by a follower of Daniele Crespi, but seen prior to cleaning). NOTE This striking image, depicting the struggle between Cain and Abel, is an early work of the artist, datable to circa 1618/20. Its recent cleaning has allowed its assesment as an autograph work by the artist; Nancy Ward Neilson has confirmed the present canvas to an early work of the artist (in a document dated November 24, 2005). Despite his short career (the artist died in his early 30's), Crespi's pictoral style developed markedly, and drew on a wide spectrum of sources. This Cain and Abel shows traits of his work in the last years of the second decade of the 17th Century, with lingering mannerist traces of the influence of Cerano and Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Neilson has suggested that it is part of a group of drawings and paintings wherein Crespi was working through issues of anatomy and movement, and all are related in their sense of dynamism. Included in this group are two drawings of anatomical studies in the Ambrosiana (see G. Bora, "Ruolo e significato del disegno di Daniele Crespi," in Fra Rinascimento manierismo e realtà, Florence 1984, p. 158, figs. 1, 4 -5) as well as a drawing in a private collection (N. Ward Neilson, Daniele Crespi, Soncino 1996, p. 85, D36, reproduced, fig. 61A). These studies are not necessarily preparatory for the present canvas, but appear to show Crespi working through issues that he faced with the compostion. A lost painting by Crespi of the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, known through copies, demonstrates similar concerns (see Ward Neilson, op. cit., p. 71, no. A11, reproduced, fig. 86B). A painting of this subject by Daniele Crespi was listed in the Arese collection, with similar measurements; a later addition of about 8 centimeters to the bottom of the canvas was removed in the recent restoration which brings the size listed in the Arese inventory quite close to the present measurements. However, a crude print of the compositon of 1795 varies from the present canvas signifcantly, so this provenance can only be speculative. NOTES Ward Nielson ( loc. cit. ) records that the attribution of the present painting to Daniele Crespi was first suggested by Edoardo Testori. She suggests that on stylistic grounds it should probably be placed among the earliest known works by the artist -- the profiles of Salome and the soldier resemble those of the angels in the altarpiece, executed in 1619, in the Chapel of Saint Antony Abbott in the church of S. Vittore al Corpo, Milan. She further notes the existence of a sheet of related drawings in a private collection ( op. cit., no. D36).
