λ SUSAN CRAWFORD (BRITISH B. 1941), DANCING BRAVE, PAT EDDERY UP

        Est: £8,000 - £12,000

λ SUSAN CRAWFORD (BRITISH B. 1941)DANCING BRAVE, PAT EDDERY UP Oil on canvas Signed and dated1987 (lower right) 71 x 91cm (27¾ x 35¾ in.)Provenance:The Tryon Gallery Ltd., London Dancing Brave was the outstanding racehorse of 1986 season, and has been described as 'the standard against which every potential world-class racer is measured'. Though his career lasted only a year, in that brief time he won 8 out of the 10 races he competed in, including the 2000 Guineas, the Eclipse Stakes, and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Though he lost the Derby to Shahrastani, he avenged this defeat in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, prompting a reputation as 'the best horse who never won the Derby'. His Arc de Triomphe victory, in which Flat jockey Pat Eddery came from the back of the field to win by a length and a half, was voted the greatest race of all time by Racing Post readers in 2022. The partnership with Eddery, whose ability to win major races was at its peak during the 80s, proved essential to his success. The jockey's riding style was 'instantly recognisable to generations of punters through his habit of bouncing in the saddle in a close finish as a means of driving his mount forwards'. Despite this unorthodox look, Eddery was clearly a natural in the saddle. His weighing room rival Michael Hills remarked that 'Horses just loved to run for him. They used to stick out their heads out for him and all they wanted to do was run as fast as they can.' Even so, Eddery and Dancing Brave's partnership seems to have been a particularly memorable one for the jockey, who called the horse a 'once in a lifetime ride'.

      • Crawford, Susan - Free Again
        Nov. 19, 2014

        Crawford, Susan - Free Again

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

FREE AGAIN Free Again, a chestnut daughter of champion Stage Door Johnny, was bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Green and William T. Young. Racing for her breeders at three and four, the filly won five times in New York, including a 5 1/4-length allowance victory at Saratoga. After her racing career, Free Again entered stud at Overbrook Farm and was eventually sold at Keeneland to Agricola A., which took her to Italy in foal to Cure the Blues. Inscribed on the back of this painting are notes by Mr. Green noting that John Hay Whitney and Paul Mellon would fly the artist to Lexington to paint their horses. It was on one of these occasions that Green and Young had her paint Free Again, named for the song sung by Barbra Streisand.

His Timeform rating of 212 has never been eclipsed. A stable companion of Arkle named Flyingbolt reached 210. In recent times Sprinter Sacre 192 and Kauto Star 191 have come closest on Timeform ratings. The gelding was bred by Mary Baker at Malahow near Naul in Co Dublin, and was foaled at the Ballymacoll Stud, Co. Meath. He carried the colours of Anne, Duchess of Westminster, was trained by Tom Dreaper at Greenogue, Kilsallaghan, Co. Dublin, and was ridden in most of his races by Pat Taaffe. Arkle won a total of 27 victories from 35 races and was the first steeplechaser to capture the imagination of the public including those in general with little or no interest in horse racing. Arkle won three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups between 1964 and 1966, whilst other major victories included the King George VI Chase (1965), the Irish Grand National (1964), two Hennessy Gold Cups (1964 & 1965), three Leopardstown Chases (1964-1966 inc.), a Whitbread Gold Cup (1965), the Gallagher Gold Cup (1965), the Punchestown Gold Cup (1963) and the Powers Gold Cup (1963). There would almost certainly have been more but for a career ending injury sustained in the 1966 King George. In Ireland Arkle gained legendary status and received fan mail within envelopes simply addressed "Himself, Ireland." His commemorations include a statue at Cheltenham Racecourse, who also host the Arkle Challenge Trophy at the Festival Meeting, whist the Arkle Novices' Chase is run at Leopardstown annual. The horse was the subject of a song by Dominic Behan and of a Republic of Ireland postage stamp issued in 1981 to mark the 25th anniversary of his retirement. After his death, Arkle's skeleton was put on display at the Museum at the Irish National Stud, Tully, Co. Kildare. 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of his first Cheltenham Gold Cup win.
