James Humbert Craig RHA RUA (1878-1944) Bringing Home the Turf, Connemara

      Est: €10,000 - €15,000

James Humbert Craig RHA RUA (1878-1944) Bringing Home the Turf, Connemara oil on canvas signed 'J.H. CRAIG' lower left h:51  w:69 cm. Provenance: The Oriel Gallery (label verso) where purchased by the present owner A cloud-filled sky dominates this painting of a mountain landscape in Connemara. Although the mountains are illuminated with late evening sunlight, the plain in the foreground is in shadow. Two figures, and a donkey with creels, are visible on a narrow road leading from a lake, represented by a thin sliver of blue paint. Although the location has not been identified, the mountains are likely the Twelve Bens, seen from the road between Leenaun and Letterfrack. The painting is a classic Connemara scene, capturing the natural beauty of this remote area of Co. Galway. At the same time, the stacks of hand-won turf dotted along the roadside bear testament to a traditional way of life stretching back over the centuries. While there have been new developments in terms of tourism and rural housing, there are still parts of Connemara that remain untouched by progress, and maintain the rugged grandeur depicted here by Craig. Born in Belfast in 1877, James Humbert Craig was taught painting by his mother Marie Sabine Metzenen (1854-1927), who came from Lausanne in Switzerland. After working for a time in his father Alexander's tea importing business, Craig studied at the Belfast School of Art. He was largely a self-taught artist, specialising in depicting landscapes of Donegal, Galway, Mayo, and also around Cushendun, in the Glens of Antrim. In 1915 he began showing his work at the RHA, and in 1928 was elected a full member. He also exhibited with the Fine Art Society in London and was a member of the RUA. Craig had little interest in Modernist innovations, and remained a solidly Realist painter-albeit with more than a touch of Impressionism in his atmospheric rendering of landscapes. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Belfast Museum in 1945, a year after his death. Peter Murray, January 2023

    • James Humbert Craig RHA RUA (1878-1944) Fishing Boat on the Shore (c.1940)
      Apr. 18, 2023

James Humbert Craig RHA RUA (1878-1944) Fishing Boat on the Shore (c.1940)

      Est: €10,000 - €15,000

James Humbert Craig RHA RUA (1878-1944) Fishing Boat on the Shore (c.1940) oil on canvas signed 'J.H.CRAIG' lower left h:61.40  w:91.50 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Painted probably around 1940, Fishing Boat on the Shore depicts two men, dressed in oilskins, pulling a heavy wooden rowing boat up above the shoreline. The day is overcast, with grey clouds suggesting impending rain. Waves roll in, breaking on the sandy shore. In the distance, a line of dark rocks extends out into the sea. Beyond that is a low headland. To the left of the rowing boat, two women transfer the catch of the day into a wicker basket. Craig's paintings of fishing boats on the shore tend to have titles such as Bringing in the Catch, and he does not specify the location. However, among his favourite coastal scenes were Dunlewey and Port na Blagh in Co. Donegal, and Cushendun in Co. Antrim, where he had a cottage. He also painted at Leenane in Co. Galway, in Mayo, Kerry, and even on the river Thames. Born in Bangor, Co. Down, Craig studied at the Belfast School of Art, but as a painter was largely self-taught. In 1915 he began showing his work at the RHA and thirteen years later was elected a full member, also in 1928 he participated in a group exhibition of Irish artists, at the Fine Art Society in London. Over the years Craig exhibited regularly with the Fine Art Society. In 1930, on the foundation of the Royal Ulster Academy, he became a member, and that year also he was included in an exhibition of Irish art held in Brussels. Craig's approach to landscape painting combines the Impressionist plein-air tradition with a solidly-grounded realism, not unlike that of Paul Henry, who was an early influence on his work. In the present work, it is likely that the wooden craft on the shore is a herring boat, and the location is Co. Donegal. A similar painting by Craig, Foreshore, Boat and Figures, is in the Ulster Museum. Peter Murray, March 2023

      Est: €5,000 - €7,000

James Humbert Craig RHA RUA (1878-1944) Mountain Lake, with Cattle (c.1940) oil on canvas signed 'J H CRAIG' lower left h:51  w:61 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Although the scene depicted in this painting has not been identified, it may be a sea inlet, or freshwater lake, in the Glens of county Antrim, where Craig often painted. The scene is dominated by glaciated mountains, rising above a patchwork of green fields on the lower slopes. A small river meanders down through a valley to the shoreline, where the mountains are reflected in the still waters. While the presence of cattle suggests that Craig is depicting a freshwater lake, it is not unknown for cattle to walk close to the sea, and even traverse through the shallows to get to grazing. Another possible location is Lough Nafooey, close to the border between Galway and Mayo. At its western end, Nafooey has a sandy beach; to the east it flows into Lough Mask. If the painting does depict Nafooey, Craig has taken slight liberties, bringing the mountains Bunnacunneen and Benbeg closer to the lake edge. Irrespective of the location, much of the quality of Craig's art lies his ability to render the Irish landscape accurately, using a subtle range of colours, and an impressionist technique. He delighted in painting mountains and rivers in different weather conditions, generally with white clouds scudding across blue skies. Born in Belfast in 1877, James Humbert Craig grew up at Bangor, Co. Down and was taught painting from an early age by his mother Marie Sabine Metzenen, who was from Switzerland. Although he attended the Belfast School of Art, Craig was largely self-taught, and specialised in depicting the landscapes of counties Donegal, Galway, Mayo, and particularly the Glens of Antrim, around Cushendun. In 1915 Craig began showing his work at the RHA, and a decade later was elected an associate member of the Academy: in 1928 he was elected a full member, and also that year participated in a group exhibition of Irish artists, at the Fine Art Society in London. Over the years Craig was to exhibit regularly with the Fine Art Society. In 1930, on the foundation of the Royal Ulster Academy, he was elected a member, and that year also he was included in the prestigious exhibition of Irish art held in Brussels.
