  • Frank Craig, Painting, Painting, The Meeting House, c. 1908

Frank Craig, Painting, Painting, The Meeting House, c. 1908

    Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Oil on canvas Great Britain, circa 1908 Frank Craig (1874-1918) - British genre and historical painter as well as illustrator Signed 'Frank Craig' lower left On the stretcher with several old exhibition and shipping labels Gilded ornament frame Dimensions: 122 x 132 cm Good condition Painting from the second creative phase of the British painter drawing back on early Dutch costume paintings; Frank Craig's works are scarce on the international art market. In 1905, Frank Craig turned to a historicizing manner of painting, drawing back to early Dutch models, as shown in the present work 'The Meeting House'. Dark nuances and a soft painterly application of color characterize the view into a meeting house with several figures sunken in prayer. The painting was shown in 1908 in the Royal Academy in London, in 1911 at an international exhibition in Rome and in Paris in 1912. The oil painting is signed lower left 'Frank Craig'. The stretcher bears several old, partly stronger fragmented exhibition and shipping labels. The painting is provided with a newer varnish. Although examination under UV-light displays vaster areas of retouching, the painting appears in good condition. The frame shows only minor signs of wear and a tiny chip. The painting measures 122 x 132 cm, the framed dimensions are 132 x141 cm. Frank Craig (1874-1918) The British painter born in Abbey Wood in Kent studied in London at the Lambeth School of Art and at the Cook's School. In 1895 he exhibited for the first time a painting at the Royal Academy of Arts where he also studied with the American painter and illustrator Edwin Austin Abbey. At the same time, Craig worked as an illustrator, among others for the magazine 'The Graphic'. Until 1905, illustratively designed scenes of modern social life and contemporary history determine the pictorial oeuvre of the artist. Then he successfully turned to a historicizing manner of painting, often with recourses on early Dutch costume paintings.
