After PIERRE LEPAUTRE (France, 1659-1744) and GUILLAUME COUSTOU (France, 1677-1746). Atalanta and Hippomenes. A pair of bronze sculptures on rouge marble base. 19th Century.

                Est: €2,000 - €2,500

After PIERRE LEPAUTRE (France, 1659-1744) and GUILLAUME COUSTOU (France, 1677-1746). Atalanta and Hippomenes. A pair of bronze sculptures on rouge marble base. 19th Century. signed F. Barbedienne Fondeur and stamped "Reduction Mecanique A Collas". Measurements: 30 x 11 x 18 cm. and 30 x 11 x 20 cm. The legend goes that Atalanta, the greek Goddess of Running, was abandoned in a forest on a mountain top by her father Iasion, who was disappointed she was not a boy. The Goddess Artemis sent a she-bear to raise her. Atalanta took a vow virgin and declared the only man she would marry had to beat her in a footrace, or forfeit his life. Hippomenes challenges the young girl and, during the race, leaves three golden apples that the goddess of love Aphrodite gave him. Atalanta slows down to pick them up, which allows Hippomenes to win the race. Here, the sculptor Lepautre depicts Atalanta with her body going forward and captured by the impulse of her stride while Hipponemes is about to throw away her golden apples to slow her down. The French sculptor Pierre Lepautre was a member of a prolific family of artists, he moved to Italy and studied at the French Academy in Rome. He returned to France in 1701 and was occupied with decorative bas-reliefs and sculptures for the Royal Chapel of Versailles and monuments and sculptures for Chateau de Marly, among others in 1704 the marble sculpture Atalanta. Guillaume Coustou was the Royal sculptor for Louis XIV and Louis XV. Coustou was also a member of a prolific family of artists and in 1735 he became director of the Royal Academy of Paintings and Sculpturs. He also made sculptures and monuments for Chateau de Marly, the new residence for Louis XV outside Versailles. In 1715 Coustou was commisioned to produce Hippomenes to complement the Atalanta sculpture by Lepautre.
