  • William Coulter (1849 - 1936) San Francisco Bay
    Mar. 30, 2025

William Coulter (1849 - 1936) San Francisco Bay

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

William Alexander Coulter (1849 - 1936) San Francisco Bay Harbor Evacuation scene, Oil on Canvas measures 27.75" x 39.75" period frame measures 35" x 46.5". The work depicts the ships of early San Francisco evacuating citizens in the 1906 Earthquake and fire that burned for three days, destroying thousands of buildings. Coulter sketched the evacuation during repeated trips on the Sausalito Ferry. Coulter, the son of an Irish Coast Guard Captain, worked and lived seven years at sea sketching and painting the ocean and maritime vessels. Upon disembarking in San Franscisco due to an ankle injury, he never looked back becoming a ‘waterfront artist’ for the ‘San Francisco Call’ newspaper where he drew pen and ink sketches for the paper. His drawings for the newspaper were used to show to the world the devastation of the 1906 earthquake and fires. He continued to paint the ever-evolving San Francisco bay area, not only witnessing the devastating earthquake of 1906, but also the city's rebuilding and modernization, particularly through the lens of his maritime roots. The present work was painted in the aftermath of the earthquake, and depicts a singular sail boat and captain floating away from the fires, amidst an army of steam driven tug boats and mammoth steam liners filled with fleeing citizens and the iron cranes and modern ships loom under the burning skies that burned for three days, destroying thousands of buildings and displacing over 200,000 people signed lower left

A small archive of research documents, letters and other printed ephemera compiled by Donald McCormick during the early 1960s in relation to his biography of Basil Zaharoff, Pedlar of Death, featuring various Autograph Letters Signed and Typed Letters Signed to McCormick from a variety of individuals including Mario Modiano, a researcher in Athens, discussing Zaharoff’s birth date and whether he is regarded as a patriot to the Greeks, providing notes on a talk with Theodore Petrakopoulos, general manager of the Grande Bretagne hotel which Zaharoff patronised, including details of an affair ‘with the wife of a degenerate Spanish duke…(who)….was a homosexual and went off each night with Athenian coachmen. At age thirteen the younger Coulter went to sea and for seven years his apprenticeship allowed him to learn every detail of the ships on which he sailed. He had a natural gift for drawing and color and during his off-duty hours aboard ship he sketched and painted. After arriving in San Francisco in 1869, he worked as a sailmaker while continuing to paint in his leisure, and by 1874 was regularly exhibiting with the San Francisco Art Association. Coulter was for the most part self-taught except for a period of three years in the late 1870s when he studied in Europe with marine artists Vilhelm Melbey, Francois Musin, and Jacob Jacobsen. One of his most important commissions was done between 1909-20 when he painted five 16' x 18' mural panels for the Assembly Room of the Merchants Exchange Building. This room was the center of all the trading and maritime business of the day on the West Coast. Overall: 17 x 19 in. Sight: 9 3/4 x 11 3/4 in. Please note that all sales are final. No refunds will be given under any circumstances.
