    Offered is an original oil on canvas cover painting to the April 24, 1915 "Saturday Evening Post" issue by John A. Coughlin. Titled "The Windup". Signed lower right and dated 1915. Top right corner on the verso of the canvas has artist and address, and attached to the top left corner is a label affixed which reads "The Curtis Publishing Co." Image size seen approx. 21" x 27", overall frame size approx. 24" x 30". Some areas of normal surface wear, and a few light areas ofcraquelure. Excellent piece of original illustration art!

    John A. Coughlin (American, 1885 - 1943) Twisted Oil on canvas, Signed lower left. 27" x 19" Title of work largely obscured on verso but “Twisted" begins the title and is clearly visible. Two small old pieces of tape on verso. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, John Coughlin (1885-1943) established a New York City studio from where he produced many illustrations for a wide variety of magazines including the “pulps." He painted cover illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, Harper’s Weekly, People’s Magazine, Farm and Fireside Magazine, etc. In October, 1915 Coughlin created the pulp cover for the first issue of Street & Smith’s Detective Story Magazine and went on to create almost all of the covers for that popular publication over the next twenty years. Condition: The work has a partial tear and two pieces of tape on the verso (although the tape does not cover an tears or rips on the canvas). Other than the partial tear at the edge of the woman's sleeve, the painting is in fine condition with no other surface damage.

Signed lower right Pulp covers from the 1920s are very scarce, and this cover features the pulp detective, Maxwell Sanderson. In 1915 John Coughlin painted the cover for the first issue of Street and Smith's Detective Story Magazine, and for a twenty year stretch, he painted nearly all of the title's covers.
