    Urban Stanley Couch (American, 1927-2007). Oil on canvas painting titled "#4" depicting a square composed of bands in blues, greens, and yellow, 1966. Signed, dated, and numbered along the verso. Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection. Lot Essay: Urban Couch was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Minneapolis School of Art and Design (now MCAD) before serving in the Navy in World War II. While serving he painted murals at Treasure Island and was known to always carry a pad of paper in his pocket to sketch. He drew influences from Japanese art as well as the pre-WWII German Bauhaus movement. His works are held in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Sioux City Art Center, as well as others.

    Urban Stanley Couch (1927-2007). Oil on canvas abstract painting titled "Yellow Square." Signed along the verso and inscribed "Morgantown, W. Va." A label from the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, is attached to the verso. Urban Stanley Couch was born and raised in Minnesota, and received his degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He worked in a variety of styles, and had a large number of influences, ranging from Abstract Expressionism and Hard Edge styles to more traditional styles inspired by his Native American heritage. He had a successful career as an academic as well as an artist, and was art department chair at West Virginia University for many years.
