A vintage limited edition color print Summer in the Albany Valley by Jenness Cortez, American, born 1944. Signed in pencil lower right, numbered, 271 of 300, lower left. Matted and framed. Note: Jenness Cortez is a painter in the contemporary revival of classical painting. As a teenager, she took private lessons with Antonius Raemaekers, a Dutch-born painter whose early instruction continues to influence her work. She also studied for five years at the Herron School of Art, and then went to New York to study at the Art Students League with Arnold Blanch. Throughout her career Cortez has had a variety of subject matter including sporting and wildlife art, landscape, portraiture, interiors and still-life. Early in her career she worked as an editorial illustrator and etcher, then returned to her love of painting, with animals as her primary subject matter. For twenty years (1977-1996), she focused on horses--most notably, thoroughbred racehorses, and in the mid-1990s she moved from horses to landscapes, and then to cityscapes and at last to interiors and still life painting where her focus remains today. Jenness Cortez has been exhibiting her work since 1975, and has had more than 40 solo shows throughout the United States. Few people in the Thoroughbred industry have had such a meteoric rise to fame as Steve Cauthen. Riding in his first sanctioned race at Churchill Downs just 11 days after his 16th birthday, Cauthen scored his first win five days later, May 17, 1976. In only his second year of racing, Cauthen became the nations leading jockey in 1977 by wins and earnings, topping the $6 million mark and earning the nickname of The Six Million Dollar Man. In 1978, at the age of 18, Cauthen became the youngest jockey ever to win the coveted Triple Crown aboard Harbor View Farms Affirmed and was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. This image of Cauthen shows him on the scale in the pink and black silks of Harbor View Farm owner Louis E. Wolfson.

Each numbered "28/100", titled, and signed, "Jenness Cortez © 1978", in pencil outside of plate. Each in simple wooden frame. Jenness Cortez was born in Indian and began her formal art studies at the age of sixteen under the guidance of Antonius Raemaekers. She further developed her fine arts background as a graduate of the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and student at the Art Students League of New York. Beginning in 1977, and for the next twenty years, she received attention for her sporting paintings and her powerful depictions of the horse. MEASUREMENTS: Each 5-1/2" x 7". Each overall with frame 12" x 12-1/4". CONDITION: Slight undulation to prints under glass. Light wear to frames. Not examined out of frame.
