Artist bio: In 1834, 1835, and 1836 Corbould won gold medals of the Society of Arts, in 1834 with a watercolour of the Fall of Phaethon, and in the last two years with models of St. George and the Dragon and a Chariot Race, from Homer. His first exhibits in the Royal Academy in 1835 included a model (Cyllarus and Hylonome); and he submitted designs for four pieces of sculpture for Blackfriars Bridge. He started exhibiting at the New Water Colour Society in 1837, becoming a member in the same year. His early exhibits included The Canterbury Pilgrims assembled at the old Tabard Inn. Many of his works were acquired by Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and his royal pupils, including an illustration of Alfred Tennyson's Morte d'Arthur presented by Queen Victoria to Princess Louise, and Henry VI welcomed to London after his Coronation in Paris, and The Iconoclasts of Basle, acquired by the Empress Frederick for the imperial collection in Berlin. Apart from the royal collections, one of the largest collections of his works was that of George Strutt of Belper. A watercolour Lady Godiva went to the National Gallery of New South Wales. Corbould exhibited in all about 250 drawings at the Royal Institute, retiring from active membership in 1898. Sight, 8.5"H x 6"W. Overall, 16"H x 14"W.

Mr Snepp was church warden at Etchingham and it is possible that Corbould came into contact with the couple when he returned home to organise his father's funeral arrangements. Edward Henry Corbould was born into an artistic family, his grandfather, father and uncle having all been painters and illustrators. Corbould's speciality throughout his career was watercolour, concentrating on literary and historical subjects. The Woman Taken in Adultery was bought by Prince Albert in 1842 initiating a long association between Corbould and the Royal Family. In 1851 Corbould was appointed Instructor of Historical Painting to the Royal Family.

ARTIST: Edward Henry Corbould was a painter, illustrator and sculptor son of Henry Corbould. He was a pupil of Henry Sass (1788-1844) and a student at the Royal Academy. He worked in watercolour and briefly in sculpture, winning gold medals for both from the Society of Arts (Fall of Phaeton, watercolour, 1834; St George and the Dragon, sculpture, exhibited at the Royal Academy 1835). He also designed monumental figures for an an uncompleted project London County Council sculpture project for Blackfriars Bridge (1889). Edward Henry Corbould concentrated primarily on watercolours of literary and historical subjects, which he exhibited with the New Water-Colour Society from 1837 until 1898. In 1842 Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, purchased his "Woman Taken in Adultery" (British Royal Collection), and the artist was appointed Instructor of Historical Painting to the Royal Family in 1851. He sketched the head and shoulders of the dead prince in 1861, and in 1871 Queen Victoria commanded the exhibition of his Marriage of Sir Nigel Bruce and Agnes of Buchan. Shortly afterwards Corbould's contract with the Royal family was terminated but he continued exhibiting at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colours, supporting himself largely by means of book illustration and by designing for the Illustrated London News and other magazines. He had been drawing master to the Royal family in the 1860s. PROVENANCE; This water-colour has passed to the present owner through the family by descent and has never previously been offered for sale.

    Est: £8,000 - £12,000

Edward Henry Corbould, (1815-1905), "Jehu son of Nimshi on his way to Jezreel", signed water-colour, Scene from 2 Kings 9:16. Entourage including mounted armed warriors and Jehu in his chariot approaching the town of Jezreel where he was seeking King Joram, who was lying there wounded and King Ahaziah of Judah both of whom he was to slay on God's orders. Inscription verso " Institute of painters in watercolours, August 9th 1879" and label "Victorian Era Exhibition 1897 Loan exhibit." The exhibition was held at Earls Court to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. 18.5" x 45". Original gilt frame. ARTIST; Edward Henry Corbould was a painter, illustrator and sculptor son of Henry Corbould.
