George Condo Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

The work of contemporary American artist George Condo encompasses elements of Cubism, a touch of the Old Masters, a hint of Salvador Dali, and a sprinkle of Walt Disney. "Psychological Cubism" is the term he uses to describe his bizarre, somewhat disturbing, yet fanciful renderings of the human figure. Faces sport eyes bulging from their sockets; a surplus of arms and legs protrude from odd places; a dog's head replaces that of a woman's. At first glance these odd images give pause, but one soon finds beauty in the grotesque. Painter George Condo's first exhibitions were in New York City in the early 1980s where he also worked a short while at Andy Warhol's iconic Factory. After spending ten years in Paris, he returned to live in New York. Contemporary paintings for sale by artist George Condo echo the themes of his early Cubist works. CONDO GEORGE (n. 1957) - VERTICAL ABSTRACTION

CONDO GEORGE (n. 1957). VERTICAL ABSTRACTION. at the back: signature, date, labels of provenance PROVENANCE Edward Totah Gallery, London Gallery Bischofbergher, Zurich Private collection, Brescia A.M.Gallery, Brescia Private collection, Brescia “Vertical Abstraction” strikes for its prophetic insight into the stylistic journey George Condo would follow throughout his career: a geometric vision rooted in Cubism and Neo-Expressionism, alternating with and sometimes blending into his portraits of Abstract Realism. In the 1980s, Condo's artistic career began: he set aside music to focus on painting, training at Andy Warhol's Factory alongside friends Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Unlike the other young stars of New York's contemporary art scene, his interest in historical and philosophical education led him to Europe, where he delved into classical and avant-garde painting. “In America there was no European training, it was all about minimalism and pop art. I realized that art is more than just representation, is a kind of a trip into your mind and what you can see in there and how you can materialize it in a form of a visual experience.” During these years, the American artist's research oscillates between a surrealist reinterpretation of classical masters, expressionist-inspired portraits enriched by cubist elements, and abstract narratives that reflect Kandinsky’s teachings. And it is likely in Europe, where he will work based in Paris until the mid-1990s, that George Condo creates this painting. Although Condo has always stated his inspiration from Picasso, this work particularly echoes the cubist pieces of Malevic, the compositions of a young Rodchenko, and certain abstractions by Mondrian. In one painting, the artist synthesizes Suprematism, Constructivism, and Abstract Expressionism, linking them back to Cubism, the common root of his artistic experience, blending references and allusions in an intriguing visual and intellectual circuit. In the central part, stylized figures can be seen, which, although in a primitive form, allude to the characters that populate his later works. Eyes, teeth, and faint expressions emerge, foreshadowing the distinctive features of his famous portraits. However, the true protagonists of this work are the vibrant colors - violet, brown, red, blue, and light blue, along with black and white - central to the artist’s poetic, used to create visual harmonies or dissonances depending on their combination. If you're familiar with Condo's iconographic universe, this work evokes the feeling that with each new glance, one may spot, at a different time, details such as a hat, two breasts, jacket buttons, or a sinister smile. His art suggests continuous visual references, turning abstraction into a game of shapes and emotional states that gradually unveil themselves, stimulating the observer's imagination and perception. “There’s no real difference between figurative painting or abstract painting, ‘cause it’s all painting to begin with...” “My art is always in flux with my imagination. I don’t necessarily draw or paint in a representational manner; it’s more an internal dialogue in my mind that is thrust onto the surface of a canvas to express my inner thoughts and feelings.”. 89 x 116 cm. 1989.

George Condo, A portfolio of prints from More sketches of Spain for Miles Davis, 1991

          Est: £6,000 - £8,000

George Condo, American b.1957- A portfolio of prints from More sketches of Spain for Miles Davis, 1991; six etchings and aquatint on Guarro paper, each signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of 40, published by Alexander Kahan, New York, sheet: 97.7 x 132 cm, (unframed) (6) Note: American artist George Condo frequently cites Picasso as a source in his contemporary cubist compositions. Condo is known for neo-Modernist compositions redolent of wit and the grotesque, which draw the eye into a highly imaginary world. Condo came up in the New York art world at a time when art favoured brazen innuendo and shock. Student to Warhol, best friend to Basquiat and collaborator with William S. Burroughs, Condo followed a different path, and came up with his own style, inspired by Picasso and the Old Masters.

Condo asserts that all of these approaches to painting now exist at the same time, and that the discipline is defined not by its ability to invent, but by its ability to reconfigure and retool styles for new audiences. Miles Davis, referred to in the title, practiced a free-form jazz that spiralled in and out of structure. To dance to Davis is a symbol for difficulty. Condo finds metaphoric footing in jazz and a complexity in cubism mixed with pop art and conceptual critique. © George Condo/Copyright Agency, 2024
