    VINCENT COLYER (American, 1825-1888) TRIPLE PORTRAIT OF THE DECATUR CHILDREN.

    Charcoal and pastel portrait of the heads of three Decatur children. The brown eyed girl in the center depicts Maria Susanna Decatur (1853-1897). The boy to her left is her twin brother Edward Philbrick Decatur, who died in 1864, the year after the portrait was made, and the brown eyed boy on the right is William Beverly Decatur (1855-1934), who later changed his name to Stephen. Signed and dated lower right "V. Colyer 1863". Housed in a period giltwood frame under glass. SIZE: 19-1/2" x 27". Overall: 24" x 31-1/2". PROVENANCE: A most historical and important collection from the estate of Maria Decatur Mayo Deyo (Lila) Garnett of Kittery Point, Maine. CONDITION: Vertical bands of discoloration, foxing and slightly faded. Not examined out of frame 52714-43

    This large oval crayon portrait depicts bust likeness of Lt. Decatur with a full beard. Image executed with black and white on a grayish-brown background. Signed boldly on the reverse "Lt. Stephen Decatur U.S.N. by V. Colyer N.Y. Brookline. Mass. July 1852". Lt. Stephen Decatur eventually attained the rank of Commodore and was the son of John Pine Decatur and nephew of his famous namesake. SIZE: 25-1/2" x 21-1/2" PROVENANCE: By descent through the family of Stephen Decatur CONDITION: Various imperfections including bruises, scrapes and wear to the surface. 9-98702
