        Zenith Gold Open Face Pocket Watch, Of Special Interest 43.0mm case with brush gold dial, Arabic numerals, subdial for second, 17-jewel movement, case engraved: GBC (Griffith Baily Coale, 1890-1950); the cased marked: EER Wadsworth, 14K, 999678; movement marked: Zenith , 2513752; and Total 55.5g all in Provenance: Griffith Baily Coale By descent to present owner (his daughter) Other Notes: Griffith Baily Coale (1890-1950), was an American painter and author, who studied art with Leon Kroll and Joan Sloan, as well as Europe. Coale is widely recognized for his mural work. During his Navy service in WWI he worked as camoufleur. Post war years he painted portraiture and murals, and by 1941 he was reenlisted and became instrumental in establishing the Navy Combat Art Program. Today it is known as The Combat Art Program which now part of the Naval History and Heritage Command's (NHHC's) Navy Art Collection. Today the collection includes over 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings, and engravings.

        oil on canvas, signed at upper left, the frame with floral and foliate molded decoration and retaining the original label to the verso. Rabbet size 24 x 20 in.; DOA 30.25 x 25.75 in. Grateful patients at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York, NY commissioned the Coale to paint this portrait to hang in the halls of the hospital.         Griffith Baily Coale: American Naval Commander and artist (1890-1950), Coale became nationally known for his famous murals and paintings, and implemented the Combat Artists Program in 1941. He was the Navy's first combat artist on active duty. Vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo of the commander in his uniform, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Ashley T. Cole, With warm regards, Griffith Baily Coale, Commander U. S. N. R. Ret." Scattered surface impressions and creasing, and some light silvering to the darker areas of the image, otherwise fine condition.
