Robert Clunie Grand Teton National Park Painting

      Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Title is Grand Teton Mountain from Timber Island August 1940. Oil on Canvas. 41 1/2" by 47 1/2" framed, 35 1/2" by 41" unframed. Robert Clunie (1895 - 1984) was active/lived in New York, California. Robert Clunie is known for Dramatic landscape painting. Robert Clunie grew up in Scotland, immigrated to America and set up in Michigan. He took his first train trip to Pasadena in January 1918, ultimately got a job painting signs on creamery trucks and explored LA. Deafness in one ear exempted him from military service in WWI. He applied for citizenship and decided to remain in California, but he had to return to Michigan, and that fateful train trip took him through the Sierra Nevada where he was thrilled artistically with the mountains. In October 1918 he returned to California by car with his brother via Taos, Santa Fe, Flagstaff, across the desert to San Bernardino and on to Long Beach. In Hollywood, he was hired as a movie artist by Metro but by 1921 he had married, settled in Santa Paula, built a home and was working as a house painter. Increasingly more of his time was spent painting easel works, and in 1928 he made his first painting of the Sierra at Lone Pine to which he began taking yearly sketching trips. The Clunies traveled a lot. For instance, they liked to drive up the coast along the Rincon to Santa Barbara or even farther to San Luis Obispo. One such trip, after a visit to friend and fellow painter Aaron Kilpatrick at San Luis Obispo, was a jaunt to Cambria Pines Lodge, where they passed Mount Hollister with its rocky outcrops atop a base covered with green brush. From the back seat little Kent exclaimed, ‘Look dad, there’s a mountain on top of that hill! One reason for the trip to Cambria was to see the land that the Cambria Pines Development Company was trading to Robert for some of his art. Later [1936], the transaction was consummated and fourteen large Clunie canvases hung in the dining room of the famous lodge. Most were High Sierra subjects although several depicted Santa Paula scenes. The collection received a wealth of notoriety over the years. The paintings remained on view until new owners took over in the 1970s." In 1940 war was looming in Europe. Clunie still journeyed to Lone Pine for inspiration and a Morro Bay newspaper reported seeing Clunie in that town. That year Clunie applied for U. S. citizenship. Immediately after December 7 [1941], the War Department put plans for defense of the west coast into action. ... Clunie to supervise the installation of camouflage for harbor installations, fuel storage tanks, and barracks at the Navy’s major west coast ship refueling depots on Morro and Cayucas [sic.] bays. … Clunie remained on site six months in civilian status… During this time, he completed a large painting of the Morro Bay Naval Base, including Morro Rock… Navy Confiscates Morro Rock Painting by Robert Clunie. After the war, the artist bought property in Bishop, California, to which he moved, built a home, and where he continued painting scenes of the Sierra Nevada. In 1954 the State of California confiscated his property in Cambria for use as part of a new highway.

Exhibited: Painters and Sculptors Club, Art Gallery of the State Exposition Building, Exposition Park, Los Angeles, CA, Winter Show, December-January, 1930. Literature: The Los Angeles Times Sunday Art Section, Los Angeles, CA, 21 December 1930 (see accompanying original framed article clipping); R. Coons, ''Robert Clunie: Plein-Air Painter of the Sierra'', Bishop, CA, 1998, pp. 88-90, illustrated. Note: Originally titled ''Sandbar and Palisade Moisture'', the present painting is a strong, early example of the artist's Sierra subjects. Stylistically, 1930 was an important year in artist Robert Clunie's career as he solidified his artistic style. Richard Coons writes in his book ''Robert Clunie: Plein-Air Painter of the Sierra'', ''The summer of 1930 was indeed a milestone for Robert. The previous summer had been a learning experience. From a compositional standpoint the die was cast; his paintings would have their distinctive look for the rest of his career'' (R. Coons, ''Robert Clunie: Plein-Air Painter of the Sierra'', Bishop, CA, 1998, p. 88). Clunie began the summer of 1930 camping and working in the North Fork basin of the Palisades. It was a considerable undertaking to change camps but with the help of a packer he did move to the South Fork Canyon, keeping only 26'' x 30'' canvases to work on there, and sent the finished paintings from the North Fork back to the pack station (Coons, p. 88). ''Unlike the North Fork basin of the Palisades, the South Fork Canyon was just that -- a closed-in, deep canyon with only close-up scenes to paint. The canyon walls obscured the huge Sierra backdrop, affording limited compositions, compared to the vast opportunities available from his other camp. Nonetheless, what Clunie saw before him pleased him, and he wasted no time starting [to paint]. He was the only person in the South Fork, and would remain alone his entire stay'' (Coons, p. 88).
